Bella
The call came at the dead of night.
It'd been a normal night until then. Emmett left for his work trip, leaving me with a kiss and a promise he would be back soon. I put the boys to bed and sat on our living room couch with a glass of wine as I waited for him to call and tell me he had made it to the airport safe. I stared at our wedding picture that stood proud on the table next to our couch as I waited. We were so happy, just two young college kids with no idea that a year from then we would have our first little boy. Now two, ten years later.
But his call never came. I assumed he'd been late to the airport, probably stuck in traffic and went straight to the plane. It was his phone number that called at three in the morning and I instantly assumed he was calling me to let me know he had made it to Miami safe.
The man who answered was a police officer and he said my husband had been in a car accident, he'd been found in the woods by someone who saw the wreck and found him in the woods, and that they were rushing him to the hospital.
I'd never felt so scared in my life.
I woke Rita in a rush and left her to watch the boys while I went to the hospital. It's been hours since I got here and they haven't given me any updates. The sun has risen and the night and day shift has officially changed.
Scenarios keep running through my head. What if he dies? What about the boys? What the hell am I going to do without him? He's been everything to me since we were in high school, I cannot imagine facing life without him. The emotion builds up inside of me, threatening to break me in any minute.
Just as I'm about to pour myself my third cup of coffee, someone finally comes out.
"Uh, family for Emmett Swan?" A doctor calls out to the waiting room.
"That's me!" I rushed to the doctor. "I'm his wife."
"I'm Dr. Vulturi, Mrs. Swan. If you'll follow me, I'll give you an update on your husband."
Relief washes over me.
He's not dead. He's not dead, thank god.
I follow him down the hall, where he pulls me into what looks like a conference room and pulls a chart in front of him.
"I'd like to apologize for having you wait so long for updates, Mrs. Swan. But the surgery was far more complicated than we anticipated."
"How is he?"
"Alive, but just barely. He suffered massive internal injuries which resulted in internal bleeding, several broken bones, and massive trauma to the head from the accident. The bullet, fortunately, went through his chest and it didn't hit any major organs. It's, and this is the only thing that can describe this, it's a miracle he's alive."
"Bullet?" I ask, confused. "He was in a car accident, why would he have a bullet wound?"
"That's what the police and I would like to know, Mrs. Swan. As of now, because of the severity of his injuries and the head trauma, he cannot breathe on his own. He's connected to a ventilator and is in a coma. We'll have to give him time to heal for him to wake up." He stands up. "If you'll wait here, Mrs. Swan, the detectives will be right in to ask you some questions."
Detectives?
He walks out, leaving me more confused than relieved. Why would Emmett have a bullet wound? He doesn't even own a gun. He knows I hate those things because they are the reason my father is dead. My heart starts racing. Was someone trying to kill him? Rob him? But who? Emmett doesn't have any enemies. That man is loved by everyone we know.
Soon, the door to the conference room opens and two detectives walk in, one of them a woman. The male is tall with black hair and dark eyes. The woman is a strawberry blonde, and very pretty.
They take a seat across from me, the male detective leaning forward on the table with his arms crossed as the blonde sits back, trying her best to stifle a yawn.
"Mrs. Swan, I am Detective Jacob Black and this is my partner Detective Tanya Denali. We're investigating your husband's accident."
I nod, unable to form a word.
"Mrs. Swan, when was the last time you saw your husband?"
"Las-st night," I answered, my voice trembling. I clear my throat. "He was leaving for a business trip to Miami."
"What kind of business?"
"He's a literary agent. There's a book signing for one of his authors."
Detective Black nodded.
"Do you know Rosalie Cullen?"
"I'm sorry, that name doesn't seem familiar."
Detective Black reaches into one of the folders he brought and takes out a picture of a woman, placing it on the table between us. She's insanely beautiful. Long blonde hair, blue eyes, high cheekbones, and full lips. I try to pinpoint her somewhere, but nothing came to mind. I'd never seen her before.
"This is Rosalie Hale-Cullen. Are you sure you've never seen her before?"
"No, I'm sorry I've never seen this woman before. But what does this have to do with my husband?"
Detective Denali leans forward. "We come from the scene of the crime. Your husband was shot, Mrs. Swan, but there are no bullet holes or blood in the vehicle that suggests he was shot while driving and his body was found ten feet away from the car wreck, which means he was shot after the accident."
"There's also no gun," Detective Black added. "We found two bags in the car. One of them was of his belongings and the other had women's clothes and a wallet. That's where we found Mrs. Cullen's ID along with her passport."
"You found her belongings in the car? W-why would her belongings be in the car? What did she say about that?"
"That's another issue we've run into. She wasn't at the scene of the crime. We've reached out to her husband and he said he hasn't seen her since last night," Detective Black said. "We can't declare her missing yet. We're still investigating the site and we're sending out search parties around the area where your husband crashed-"
I take a deep breath, pulling my hair away from my face. This is all too much.
"What area?"I asked.
"He was close to Forks, Washington. His car ran off the road near the river."
"It doesn't make sense," I stammer. "Why would that woman be in his car? Was she the one who hurt him?"
"That's what we're trying to figure out," Detective Denali said. "If you have information that could help this investigation, feel free to call us." She hands me her cards and they stand up to leave. "I hope your husband gets well soon."
I'm sure she does. As of now, only Emmett knows what happened on the road last night. But why was he heading to Forks if he was going to Miami? And who the hell is this woman?
Shortly after the detectives leave, I take the picture of the woman and study it. No, I've never met this woman. I drop the picture as if it burnt my finger tips and start nibbling on the tips of my fingers. There are too many questions, too many. After the detectives leave, Dr. Vulturi comes to find me in the waiting room and takes me to the ICU where they're keeping Emmett. A sob escapes me almost as soon as I see him. He looks so beaten up. His right eye is swollen and the left side of his face is entirely bruised. He has a tube coming out of his mouth that's taped to his cheek and his right arm is in a cast.
Emmett is a big man. He looks intimidating from afar, but in reality, he's just a huge teddy bear. He wouldn't harm anyone and I can hardly imagine anyone wanting to harm him. I take a seat beside him, taking his hand in mine and pressing it against my cheek. His words echo in the back of my mind.
Everything I do is to protect you, Bella.
And he has. For as long as we've been together, all Emmett has ever done is protect me. Love me. But who will if he dies?
Who the hell is that woman and why did he have her things? Was she running away from her husband? I sigh and kiss the palm of his hand.
"What the hell happened last night, Emmett?"
