Chapter 3: The Director:

Today was a great day for Chloe. She had managed to get a massive amount of work done, and had a great presentation to the old governmental creeps of S.H.I.E.L.D. To top it all off, the Triskelion was mostly quiet and relaxing due to most of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s significant units of agents being away on longer missions.

"Now that the old men are out of the way, I can enjoy the rest of my shift." Chloe was excited to escape it all. The creepy council that she had to put a fake smile on for, the annoying higher ups and especially the jealous tendencies of her fellow coworkers, whom had been giving her colder treatment since he begun spending time with Steve as of late.

As Chloe walked through the halls of the Triskelion to find a bathroom she found herself drifting slowly to thinking about Steve. He was just about perfect in every category. A perfect gentleman, proper manners, a sweetheart, Steve had just about everything. Chloe sighed in a dreamily manner. No man should be that perfect. She mentally told herself this. She snapped out of it quickly. No no, I don't want to come off as desperate, Steve is a great guy in need of a good friend.

Chloe had it all in her life. Peace, quiet, good self esteem, good health, and stability...semi stability. She thought about how she had all of the things she wanted and needed in her life. But was it all worth it? She enjoys these things, but it can be be a bit repetitive and boring to say the least. Maybe she could hang out with Steve the next time to she would see him. That sounded like a good plan.

"I wonder if Steve's away on a mission or not. Maybe he'll want to get together again." Chloe got her phone out to shoot Steve a message. She genuinely enjoyed the conversation during their breakfast get together and wouldn't mind doing the same thing again or even something similar to it. Maybe even grab some lunch or even dinner together. That sounded like a good idea in Chloe's mind.

"Hey Steve, I had a great time with you and I think we really clicked with one another, I was wondering if maybe you'd like to do it again sometime soon when I'm not here at the Triskelion, and you're not away on S.H.I.E.L.D. missions."

Chloe shot the message to Steve and sent it with no regrets. She knew it would most likely take a while for Steve to get back to her and she was completely content with that. Most people eyed her in an odd way for her never ending patience, and Chloe knew this. She just didn't care. She was her own person and unique compared to others, and she took immense pride in her own personality.

"So how'd it go in there with your presentation, Miss Harper?"

Chloe's thoughts were halted as she was startled by a woman whom she had never met before. Not wanting to be rude, Chloe responded. "Oh, sorry, you just...startled me a little, but it went well anyways so there's that."

"I'm glad to hear." The woman softly said. "I'm Maria Hill, the deputy director of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Chloe was a tad surprised, "The Agent Maria Hill?" Then the realization started to take hold of Chloe. "Am I in some sort of trouble if the deputy director wants to see me? This must be a serious matter I suppose."

Hill shook her head. "Oh no, you're not in trouble...at least not with me."

Chloe was growing visibly nervous, and she knew that Agent Hill could sense it. "If you don't mind me asking, Agent Hill, what do you mean not with me?"

"Director Fury wants to see you in his office now."

Her eyes widened. Paranoia began flowing through Chloe's body. Why would Director Fury want to see her? All of her time working at S.H.I.E.L.D., she had managed to stay under the radar for nearly three years. Never had an incident, always got her work done. Never caused any problems, nor had any direct tension or negative relations with other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and staff.

What could Nick Fury, the Nick Fury, the man behind the Avengers, one of the coldest and toughest spies in history want with plain old Chloe Harper? Chloe's mind began playing mental tricks on her. Sweat flowing down her face didn't make her worries ease either.

Hill could see that the woman had obviously never interacted with Fury or any of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top guns until today of course. "You'll be fine, if you know whatever you do isn't wrong, then things will work out fine."

Chloe sighed and nodded. "Very well, can you help me find Director Fury's office Agent Hill?"

Hill nodded. "Yes, follow me."

"Is this it?"

Hill spoke with sincerity. "Yes, this is Director Fury's office, he's waiting for you right now as we speak. "Good luck in there, Chloe."

Chloe was wondering how she knew her first name being that she had never outright said it to her, or her last name for that matter, but she had no time to dwell on it. Right now, she had her boss waiting inside for her right now.

The worrisome Chloe took a deep breath before entering the office. And there he was; standing up, looking out the window, with his back turned. He said nothing; nor did he acknowledge her presence. Chloe wondered if this is what Fury did before he fired a person.

Maybe this was it? The end of Chloe's career? But things wouldn't be so bad right? There was always other places to work at such as Stark Industries, or Pym Technologies. I wonder if Stark Industries or Pym Technologies hires Ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. workers.

Letting her paranoia subside, at least momentarily, Chloe took a deep breath. Here goes nothing. "Hi...Director Fury?"

Fury continued to remain silent, scaring her even more.

Chloe spoke up again, this time a little more softly. "Hi Director Fury...I'm-"

"I know exactly who you are, Chloe."

The sudden cut off got Chloe's nerves running again. All of her work to remain under the radar at S.H.I.E.L.D. was for nothing. Director Fury unfortunately knew who she was and to Chloe in her mind, that meant that she was soon going to be out of a job. The way Fury spoke to her was scary. It was like Fury was either trying to scare her or make her feel inferior. It was definitely the former.

"How do you kn-"

Fury cut Chloe off, with no hesitation he disapproved everything she was going to say. "Your full name is Chloe Annalise Harper...born June 5th, 1985 in Brooklyn of New York City...your parents are Jonathan and Joanie Harper, Joanie being the teacher, and Jonathan as the principle...your childhood best friends are Emilia Lopez, and Lacy Hansley. Emilia is a very smart and well respected museum director and curator at the Smithsonian Institution and Lacy is a well respected artist in the world. You graduated high school with all straight A's before moving to Washington, D.C. with Emilia and Lacy and spent most of the 2000s and early 2010s studying and earning your degrees and eventually graduating George Washington University. And you've been working for S.H.I.E.L.D. since since May of 2012."

Chloe was completely taken aback. Nick Fury had just practically summarized her entire life story in one go. She was honestly kind of freaked out. "That...how do you know...everything about me?"

Fury replied casually, "It's my job to know everything...or I rather make it my job to know everything. After all, I'm the one that personally gave you this damn job, Miss Harper."

That was all Chloe needed to hear. "So Director, I take it this is my termination because if so...I'll just go ahead and pack my things, I won't be of any inconvenience to S.H.I.E.L.D."

"That's not why I summoned you to my office. I'm here to talk to you about Captain America." Fury paused. "Word around town is that you two are blossoming around here like a damn flower. Rumor has it that you showed up to work here on his motorcycle with his shield attached to your back. I like to keep things orderly around here and I want to know firsthand what are your intentions with Captain Rogers? Fame leading to a fortune? Connections to Stark Industries? What are your goals with the greatest soldier to ever walk the earth?"

Chloe was baffled and especially taken aback. Who was he to assume something like that about her? She didn't care about Fury being the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. or even him being her boss, the New Yorker in her wasn't going to allow him to disrespect and make false accusations about her and her character and personality. "How dare you? I respect you for being the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I'm grateful for the opportunity you gave me to come work here even though I'm just now finding out you hired me, but I will not allow you to insult me like this Director Fury. I'm not just some random groupie looking to be the girl who spouts that she let Captain America knock her up...unlike most of the female employees you have working here. Like I said to Steve when I first met him, I only value Steven Grant Rogers, the person, the civilian, I could care less about Captain America, as far as I'm concerned, Captain America is merely a persona. Steve is just looking for a friend, someone to share his problems and feelings with. Someone to help him better understand a time where he should've been peacefully retired and elderly after serving his country for years during World War II. And that's what I want to be able to provide Steve, a genuine person he can trust and go to about anything. If you're going to fire me for offering to be someone's friend, then that'll say a lot about how S.H.I.E.L.D. operates and how you are as a person, Director Fury."

Fury slowly nodded. "We just want Captain America to be careful about allowing people into his life. He's a huge asset to S.H.I.E.L.D. and its goals of protecting the planet from terrestrial or extraterrestrial threats."

"See right there Director, that is precisely why Steve can never adapt well to the modern world, everyone is always looking at him for what he can do for them and their agendas. No one ever takes the time to see if he's feeling okay, or he's had a nice day. It makes me sick to say."

Fury sounded almost baffled. "You think we don't care for the Captain?"

"To be perfectly honest with you Director, no I do not. If you truly valued and cared for Steve, you'd always try and make sure he's okay outside of his Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D. duties. The poor guy has a lot to juggle if you people actually put it into consideration. Public appearances for charity, being an agent, consultant and leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., being the leader of the Avengers, adapting to the modern world, all of that he has to do all by himself. Hell, I'm surprised Steve hasn't broken down from all of that pressure, lord knows I would've quickly given up on it all. So I say this to you Director, Steve's life starts changing; now, starting with me. Whether you like it or not, I will continue being Steve's friend and helping him find his way in a world that seems to have left him behind."

Fury said nothing, simply continuing to eye Chloe. She would've guessed that he was either trying to size her up or trying to process that one of his employees was casually talking defiantly to him. "I see now...that only leaves one question; what're you going to do now, Doctor Harper?"

Feeling the vibe that Fury was testing her, she gave her honest answer. "I'm going to continue seeing Steve as a friend of course, showing him the ropes life and that there's more to it all than saving the planet. He needs it badly. After all, I'm a doctor as good as I am a scientist. I can usually point out and determine these things in a person. And Director Fury, I can tell you're trying to test me, and out of fear of losing my job, I won't say anything further than that."

"I'm not going to fire you, Doctor Harper. I hired you because you're a gifted woman with talents. Hell, you still have a damn good amount of hidden talent and potential that you don't even know about. I'm just making sure you're staying on the right path and not getting distracted or caught up in the cross fire."

"Believe me Director, my work and career is one of, if not the most important thing in my life. I'll always keep fighting to prove myself and keep learning new things and learning new skills. I may not be an agent like the Black Widow or as strong and powerful as an Avenger, but I've got a genuine passion for the good things in my life, Steve's friendship included."

"Hmph, I'll take your word for it, Doctor Harper."

Chloe sighed. "Is there anything else that you would like to discuss with me Director Fury?"

Fury turned around back towards the window. "No that'll be all for now...you're dismissed...I'm keeping an eye on you, Miss Harper. Try and stay out of trouble, this game is a messy and dangerous one."

"Duly noted, Director."

"Alright, now go on...I've got a load of damn paper work to do...and I hate prolonged paper work."

Chloe nodded and exited Fury's office. As she left the office, she was greeted by Hill once more. "So how'd it go down in there?"

"It was fine, I'm just glad that's over with, Director Fury gives me chills, overly cold and a down individual."

Hill smiled. "You can't fault him for that, we work for a secretive government agency Chloe, being tough and demanding is usually a precaution against outside threats. And besides that, Fury may seem like a stern person, but he just wants you to succeed and work hard."

Chloe nodded. "I see, well in that case, it can't be easy having to casually worry about maintaining world peace and security three hundred and sixty five days out of the year."

"But I do agree with you on one thing, Doctor Harper. Steve does need a friend, and I'm pretty sure that he's sick and tired of the female employees trying to force themselves into his life...and bed...so based upon what I've read regarding your character and personality, and how much most of the female workers envy you, I'm going to give you a light assignment; can be be Steve's friend? Like a genuine friend, and can you help him adapt to the modern world? I'm sure he would appreciate that a lot."

"Is that even a question? Of course I would, I wouldn't even consider this an assignment as my intentions are pure. I want Steve to have a friend, and I want genuinely want to be his friend."

Hill nodded approvingly. "I believe you. You're too pure to try and corrupt someone."

Chloe groaned slightly. "How is it that everyone can tell how much of a sweetheart I am so easily before they get to know me. I mean, don't get me wrong Agent Hill, I'm as sweet as they come, but how does everyone point it out so fast?"

Hill chuckled softly, slightly giving Chloe confusion. "You're a natural soft girl, you don't give off venom or hatred. And Chloe, don't think me and Fury didn't notice you at all since employing you here in 2012. I kept tabs on you and everything you did since then. It's my job to know these things, or I rather make it my job."

"I'm not surprised." Chloe says, putting her hands on her hips. "Fury told me the same thing in his office a few minutes ago."

"Well I've got S.H.I.E.L.D. business to attend to, and I take you do as well Miss Harper, so I'll see you again sometime." Hill turned back around and walked the other way, leaving Chloe alone in the hallway.

Chloe was left standing in the hallway by herself to reflect and think upon everything from her growing bond with Steve, to her meeting the Director and Deputy Directors of S.H.I.E.L.D. She for one found Hill to be far nicer than Fury.

A/N's: And that wraps up Chapter 3/III. This one took a little longer to get published because of Holiday Shopping, and but mainly because of Nick Fury, yes, the one and only. Nick Fury is one of my favorite Marvel characters, especially his MCU Incarnation. I wanted to make his introduction as Nick Fury as I could possibly be. And ultimately I'm happy with how his introduction as well as Maria Hill's introductions came out to be.

A little timeline & biography update, as of Chapter 3, it is still September of 2013 and we're currently still in the Pre-Winter Soldier Phase/Arc. Chloe was born on June 5th, 1985 meaning she's currently 28 years old, while Steve was obviously born on July 4th, 1918 meaning he's currently 95 years old. And there's the biography and timeline update.

I'm really excited to keep progressing along with my story, as I've got the next 50 chapters scripted and ready for writing followed by publishing. And mind you, that's just for the Pre-Winter Soldier Arc alone. I think you'll all like the stuff I have planned for Chloe and Steve, starting with the next chapter, with Steve's return. And for those who are curious and will repeatedly ask, Yes! The Avengers will make appearances eventually. I also have an entire Fandom Page/Wiki created for The Legend Reborn Verse, and I'll share the link to that when the time comes. And thank you to all who takes a chance on my story, reads them, reviews them & follows favs them. It means a lot to me that my stories can bring people entertainment or an escape from reality.

With all that being said, Happy Holidays, have fun, stay safe, and be good people!
