Wings
A New Day Part 4
Lee and Carley snuck towards the entrance of the Travelier Motel, the place Glenn had said he was, both stopping when seeing it was overrun with the creatures.
"Shit!" Whispered Lee, pinning his wings against his back, "Get down!"
A nearby creature growled, as Lee and Carley ducked down behind a wall. Carley took her gun out, ready to kill it if it spotted them. After a moment, the creature walked away, making Lee exhale in relief. The pair peeked over the wall, hearing a creaking sound.
"Did you see that?" Whispered Carley, getting a nod from Lee.
"Sure did."
The lid of an icebox opened partly as something pounded on it from inside, Lee and Carley stood up, the latter pointing her gun at the sound.
"Be ready to shoot." Murmured Lee, getting a nod from Carley.
The lid suddenly opened, revealing Glenn inside, "Guys! Oh, man, I'm glad you're here."
"Jesus, Glenn!" Swore Carley, as Glenn got out of the icebox and jumped over the wall.
"Alright, that wasn't so hard." Said Lee, as they crouched down behind the wall.
"Can we get out of here before any of these things notice us?" Asked Carley, her wings twitching as she glanced around.
"Not yet." Glenn shook his head, "There's a survivor trapped up there."
Lee and Carley follow Glenn's finger and looked at the second floor of the motel, where a group of the creatures pounded on a door.
"No way." Dismissed Carley, shaking her head, "We gotta go, now."
"Listen." Sighed Glenn, "I was out here looking for gas. And then, up there in the corner room, I heard crying coming from inside."
"Who is it?" Frowned Lee, his wings shifting.
Glenn: It's a girl. We talked and she got frightened. I was trying to get in and help her and she started yelling and saying I was bitten. I tried to convince her I wasn't, and that's when all these guys came out of the forest. A couple almost got me, and I ended up hiding in the ice machine.
"Lucky you;" Carley rolled her eyes, annoyed, "now let's go!"
"We can't just leave her." Protested Glenn, looking between them.
"Damn right, we can't." Agreed Lee, frowning.
"You guys are suicidal over a girl!" Whisper-Yelled Carley, incredulous.
"I'm saving her," Decided Glenn, determined, "with or without you."
"Think about if it was you." Said Lee, turning to Carley.
"Fine." Sighed Carley, rolling her eyes as she drew her gun, "Let's go save Glenn's damsel in distress."
The group of three snuck over to another wall, crouching behind it, "Okay, this is the plan. We don't know how hard it's gonna be to get her out of that room."
"Yeah, it's boarded up." Informed Glenn, looking up at the room.
"So," Murmured Lee, frowning, "we have to kill every one of them in here."
Carley reloading her pistol drew Lee's attention, "Quietly. Noise attracts these things. Now let's have a look around."
"What do you see up there?" Sighed Carley, shaking her head, "If I have to use this, we're in trouble."
Lee poked his head up to look over the wall, spotting one of the creatures eating a corpse. "Oh, man. She's eating something." Groaned Glenn, glancing at Lee, "So we got that one right there, close." Lee looked around spotting another creature trying to enter a room, "There's one back there, trying to get into a room, but I didn't see anyone actually in there." Said Glenn, as Lee looked at a car. "I saw one lurking on the other side of that car." Supplied Glenn, getting a nod from Lee.
Lee looked to the left, peaking around the wall, spotting something, "There's a pillow over there."
"Yeah," Grimaced Glenn, "That's about as far as I got when it came to supply gathering."
"I might have an idea for it." Said Lee, taking the pillow.
"Good luck smothering them to death..." Snarked Carley, her wings flattening against her back, Lee frowned, before an idea popped into his head.
"That's not really what I have in mind." Remarked Lee, his wings flicking slightly, as he looked to the right, "We can hide by that pickup."
Lee, Carley, and Glenn rushed over to the truck and hid behind it. Looking around, Lee spotted a car, "We can do something with that," He lowered his wings and looked at Glenn and Carley, "I bet, if it weren't for that fella lurking near the front." Glancing in the truck, spotting a screwdriver sitting on one of the seats, "I think I found a pretty damn good way to stop these guys quietly."
"Now we just have to get it quietly." Reminded Glenn, getting a frown from Lee.
Lee flexed his wings, flinching at the stab of pain from his left wing, grunting, Lee looked at Carley, "Get out your gun." He knew Carley was already holding her gun, as she had been doing the entire time they'd been here.
"But the noise..." Carley glanced at her wings.
"You damaged your wing slicing that thing in the drug store," Said Lee, grabbing her shoulder, "Just follow my lead; stay right behind me."
Lee then, without waiting for Carley to agree, approached the creature and smashed the pillow over its face. Carley pressed her gun against the pillow and pulled the trigger, killing the creature with a muffled gunshot.
"That was sick!" Grinned Glenn, looking between Lee and Carley, as they all hid behind a car.
"I'd prefer cover that can't just roll away." Said Carley, wincing as she pressed her injured wing to her back.
"We can get that guy by the wall over there, I bet..." said Glenn, as Lee opened the front door of the car. He released the parking brake, before noticing something on the floor of the car and picking it up.
"It's, uh, a sparky thing." Said Lee, looking at it.
"Spark plug." Corrected Glenn, "You should hold onto that, could come in handy."
Lee nodded, giving the car a push, making it roll backwards, and crush a creature against the wall.
"That was awesome!" Glenn gave a quiet laugh, as they returned to hiding behind the truck.
Lee stood up and elbowed trucks window, "Ow!"
"Alright, let's see those ninja rocks!" Laughed Glenn getting a frown from Lee.
"Ninja what-now?" Lee looked at Glenn as the man laughed.
"You picked up that spark plug to shatter that window, right?" Asked Glenn, the humour on his face freezing.
"What the hell are you talking about?!" Demanded Lee, scowling at Glenn,
"Let me see the spark plug." Said Glenn, taking the spark plug from Lee, "The porcelain inside these things turns car windows to tissue paper."
He put the spark plug on the ground and stomped on it. He carefully took a piece of porcelain from inside the crushed spark plug and handed it to Lee. He threw the piece of porcelain into the window, shattering it. The creatures heard the window breaking and briefly turned and looked in the direction of the group, but the noise from the crying girl drew their attention back. Lee took the screwdriver, which turned out to a awl, from the seat of the truck.
"That could scramble a brain pretty good." Said Glenn, looking at it appreciatively.
"That's exactly what I was thinking." Smirked Lee, twirling the tool in his hand.
Lee returned to the brick wall, gesturing for the others to follow him, as her prepared to use the awl on the creature that was crouched over, eating. He approached the creature, coming up behind it as quietly as he could, and stabbed it in the back of the head, he then hid behind the RV with Glenn, before he whistled at another creature, who began to slowly stumble towards him.
"I'll wait for him to get closer..." Murmured Lee, checking around the side of the RV, "Wait for it..."
Lee jumped out and stabbed the creature in the chest, then again in the eye. He didn't notice another creature approaching them until Glenn smacked it with a board.
"Lee!" Cried Glenn, "Get him!" Prompting Lee to stab the creature in the eye.
"Nice!" Smirked Glenn, getting a smirk from Lee.
"Thanks for having my back."
"For sure." Responded Glenn, as Carley joined them.
They snuck over to the creature trapped behind the car, it clawed at them, but couldn't reach. Lee stabbed the creature in the head, killing it, but losing the awl, which remained stuck in the creature's head.
"Dude, where'd your weapon go?" Frowned Glenn, looking at Lee.
"Into that ice-pick-sized hole." Answered Lee, frowning.
"Holy shit." Laughed Glenn, before gesturing to a fire axe, "It's cool, now we've got this."
"Are you two done?" Scowled Carley, frowning at them as Lee took the axe.
"Two more." Said Lee, looking up at the balcony.
"That should help." Commented Glenn, glancing at Lee's axe.
"We'll try to have your back," Said Carley, her wings shifting, "but this gun's a liability."
"Be careful dealing with the two upstairs." Said Glenn, as they approached the stairs.
"Why don't you guys lag behind," Suggested Lee, his thoughts going back to Carley's comments about her gun, "just in case this goes to hell?"
"Okay." Frowned Carley, her wings telling him what she really thought about his plan, "We'll be right behind you."
Glenn nodded, as Lee snuck up the stairs and around the corner. The first creature spotted Lee and started approaching him, prompting Lee to swing the axe and cut the creature's head off. The second creature heard the head hit the flooring, making it turn and stumble towards Lee, who violently swung his axe and decapitated it.
"Rad." Grinned Glenn, making Lee smile.
The three of them approached the motel room, "Hello in there? We're here to help." Called Lee, pounding on the door.
"Please, just go away!" Cried the girl, making Lee frown.
"Let's go, guys." Said Carley, turning to leave.
"In a minute." Objected Lee, before hitting the door again, "If you open up, we can take you somewhere safer. We've got a group in town."
"No, no, no!" Screamed the girl, "Please, no!"
"She's in trouble!" Gasped Glenn, looking at Lee.
"Miss! We're coming in!" Called Lee, as Glenn spoke, "You might want to break through that board first."
Lee gave Glenn a sideways look, before breaking the boards blocking the door with his axe. He jiggled the handle, before he kicked the door.
"Stop, just stop!" Cried the girl, "I'm coming out."
The girl opened the door and walked out. She was pale and had a bloody wound on her abdomen, her light brown wings patchy and missing chunks of flesh and feathers.
"You're hurt." Sighed Lee, seeing her wounds.
"Oh, God." Gasped Carley, her hand covering her mouth.
"I..." The girl said tearfully, "I said stay away."
"We need to get you help." Said Glenn, ignoring her.
"It's too late for that." Cried the girl, looking down.
"Guys," Sighed Carley, looking at them, "she's been bitten."
"What?!" Gasped Glenn, his head snapping to Carley and then to the girl.
"I told you." Sobbed the girl "I said go away, I'm bit. But you wouldn't just leave."
"Let's calm down." Sighed Lee, not believing his own words, "You could be fine."
"I won't be fine." Shrieked the girl, "My boyfriend was bitten. You get sick and you die, and you come back, and you kill anything you can find."
"You have a boyfriend?" Groaned Glenn, sounding disappointed.
"Glenn!" Snapped Carley, glaring at him.
"I don't want that." Cried the girl, "It's not Christian. Please, just leave me, please go."
"Okay, we'll leave." Conceded Lee, sighing, "Just try to take care of yourself, for whatever time you have left."
The girl noticed Carley's gun, "You have a gun."
"So?" Frowned Carley, her wings folding.
"Can I..." Asked the girl, "borrow it?"
"What do you mean, 'borrow'?" Frowned Carley, frowning at the girl.
"Give it to me." Said the girl, "I can just, you know, end this and then... then there's no problem."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa..." said Lee, his wings flaring.
"Please!" Cried the girl, "I don't want to be one of them. They're... they're... satanic."
"We can't let you do that to yourself." Said Lee, not truly believing his own words.
"Then do it for me!" Cried the girl, as Carley turned to leave.
"We need to get going." Carley told the others.
"Give it to me, please!" Screamed the girl, desperation covering her tone.
"This is crazy!" Said Glenn, looking at Lee and Carley.
"Please, step back." Carley requested, looking at the girl, as she slowly approached her.
"It's just two seconds, just one bullet," The girl tried to persuade her, "and I can be with my family, and it'll all be fine."
"Miss..." cautioned Lee, his wings starting to flare wider.
"Back up!" Snapped Carley, ignoring a stab of pain as her wings flared.
The girl continued to approach Carley, who steps backward. The girl lunged at her, trying to grab the gun, crying, "Please!" Carley was backed up against the railing as the girl tried to take the gun from her, as Lee and Glenn tried to pull her away. The balcony creaked, before breaking, sending everyone falling to the ground, the gun slid away when they landed, allowing the girl to pick it up.
"Whoa, take it easy. We just want to help." Soothed Lee, jerking one of his wings until he heard a pop.
"You can't." Cried the girl, getting a sigh from Lee.
"What's your name?"
The girl looked at him, making Lee repeat himself, "What's your name?"
"I-Irene."
"I'm Lee," said Lee, before gesturing towards Carley and Glenn, "These guys are Carley and Glenn."
Irene pointed the gun at her head, making Lee panic, "Irene, just relax now. You need to think this through. We'll find you a doctor, it'll be okay. Let's all just... No, no, no, no, no!" Lee ran towards Irene, as she pulled the trigger. The gun clattered to the ground, Glenn picked it up, horrified and shaking. He covered his mouth with his hand, before vomiting.
"Let's get out of here." Said Carley, as more of the undead creatures started stumbling toward the group. Carley took her gun from Glenn and pointing it at the creatures, her wings flaring.
"Shit!" Swore Lee, looking at Glenn.
"Here they come!" Cried Glenn, as they ran to the car, "Get in!" The three got into the car before quickly driving away.
