Han's life was a string of unexpected surprises. There'd been a period of time when that had been exciting, but in recent years, it had been nothing but unfortunate. Finding the Millennium Falcon again had been the first positive turn his life had taken in a long time, and it had quickly gone off track when he and Chewie had found two stowaways onboard.
Han ran a hand over his tired eyes. He never knew where he was going or what he was doing these days, but he certainly hadn't planned on this. He looked at the two young ones over his shoulder and shook his head.
Both of them possessed a naivety that Han hadn't seen up close for a long time.
Finn was a liar. Han could tell that he'd seen more of the galaxy than Rey had but only relatively speaking. Something had scared him, and he was running from it. Han would have recognized that look anywhere, and it was the only reason he was willing to let his lies slide from the moment.
Rey, on the other hand, hadn't lived an easy life on Jakku, but she was entirely out of her element away from her home planet.
Neither of them noticed Han watching them as they talked. Rey was excitedly asking Finn questions about the Resistance, and Finn was stumbling through answers that sounded worse than any holodrama Han had been forced to watch. If he didn't feel such sympathy for the two of them, he would have hated them.
"Do you think they'll be okay with me being there?" Rey asked, her voice quiet like she thought no one but Finn would be able to hear her.
Han felt bad for listening in, but there was nowhere for him to go that wasn't directly past them.
"Of course," Finn said, but his voice wavered. "It's the Resistance."
Han sighed. After what had happened with Ben, he thought he was finished feeling fond of young people with futures that could as easily turn disastrous as they could bright.
He'd been wrong.
