Chapter 1
The first thing Shino noticed as he was pulled from his drug induced slumber was the pain, it began in his chest exploding outward to engulf his entire being. The more awake and aware he became the more intense the pain. Deciding that he was getting nowhere just laying on what felt like the floor, cold and unforgiving, he decided it was time to review his surroundings.
Shino's eyelids flickered for a few seconds before slowly opening to slits to reveal a pair of glassed over green orbs. Assaulted by the brightness of the room he flinched violently before snapping them shut again. The pain that coursed through his body peaked at the sudden movement. Letting out a sharp hiss as the pain began to increase further, his breathing picked up and soon he was panting heavily before finally passing out.
***10 hours earlier***
Shino came running into the sitting room, Murasame perched on his shoulder.
"So, guess what?" he said excitedly as he came to a stop in front of the tall, dark haired Teen. Sosuke looked up from his place in the book he was engrossed in to see the young boy bouncing on the balls of his feet. Sosuke was about to ask what had the raven-haired boy so giddy, when Shino started again.
"I was taking a walk with Murasame and we found a really cool cottage just outside of town. It looked completely empty when we checked it out. But when we were leaving I heard a noise, it sounded like a giggling girl, but couldn't find her when I went to look" He pouted before continuing " But I found something even better. I found your Bead Sosuke. Look." With that he pulled his hand out of his pocket. Sosuke's eyes went wide when he saw that Shino was correct, in his palm was Sosuke's Pale Blue Bead with the word "DUTY" engraved inside.
Sosuke was lost for words, only able to stutter as he tried to comprehend Shino's story as he took the bead from his hand. He stared at the bead for a few minutes more before he finally looked up at Shino noticing the rambunctious boy had also become silent. "Shino… Not that I'm grateful, but you mentioned hearing a girl before finding the bead"
"That's right, it was weird. When I went looking for the noise I found the bead on the floor in the direction of where I heard it. Guess I must've missed it before. But I was so excited about finding it that I just ran back here. Hmm… thinking about it maybe I should've looked more for the girl" The last part came out as a whisper a thoughtful look crossed his face.
At that Sosuke stood up from his chair, closing the book and placing it on the side table "Shino, I need you to take me to this cottage, right now!"
"Can we do it in a bit, I'm so hungry I haven't eaten since this morning" He whined, "EAT MEAT!" Murasame screeched at the thought of food, flapping his wings in excitement.
"I'm sorry Shino, but that will have to wait. I need to see where you found the Bead ASAP" Sosuke stated authoritatively.
"Buuuuutttt Sooooooo, I'm huuuuunnnngggrrrryyyyy" He whined holding his abdomen in mock protest.
"Shino! The fact that you found my bead so easily is too suspicious and I want to see what I can find out about this 'mystery girl' before whoever it is has time to cover up their tracks. So please, stop being a selfish brat and take me to the cottage!" As soon as the last sentence left his lips, he regretted them. Shino's playful demeanour had morphed into one of shock at being yelled at, his face holding a frown and his eyes beginning to glisten with unshed tears.
Turning away from his adoptive brother. Shino dried his eyes before the tears fell. Taking in a deep breath and burying any emotions before they threatened to overwhelm him, he straightened his face and ground out in a monotone voice "Fine Sosuke, meet me out front and I'll take you to the cottage" before running out of the room, Murasame hot on his heels.
Sosuke stood staring at the door for a few minutes, guilt written on his face. 'Maybe I was too hard on him, I shouldn't have called him that. I should apologise to him.' With that he grabbed his black button up Jacket and ran out the door after Shino.
Shino had just made it out the front door when he heard Sosuke calling for him, he went to sit on the step to wait for him to catch up when he heard rustling in the bushes to his right. Curious he went over to bushes, still angry at what Sosuke had said to him he shouted "Oi! Whoever is there had better come out right now! I'm not in the mood for playing!" as he approached the bushes the movement stopped. Unsure if it was due to his outburst or just his imagination, he once again heard what sounded like a little girl, but instead of giggling she was now sobbing softly. He reached out his hand to move the bush aside when he felt a sharp sting on the back of his neck, followed by a sudden lethargy which caused his world to blur as his knees buckled. He was unconscious before his body fully met the ground beneath him.
