The Second Quarter Quell
A/N: As with the last chapter when I talked about District Six, there is mention of slavery, drugs and abuse. Please, if one of these thing will make you feel uncomfortable, skip District Six. I will not be using that again, as I kill the last slaver in this chapter, and there will be no more mention of it after this chapter. The Victor prostitution and physical and emotional abuse also come up briefly in this chapter. I am sorry, I have a very dark imagination.
"On the Fiftieth anniversary, as a reminder to the rebels that twice the number of rebels were killed then Capitol people, each Districts will reap twice the number of tributes."
District One:
Angel Braun was confident she could win. The other Nobles in the Games were all just kidding themselves. Brauns had produced the most recent Victor for District One, and undeniably the best, no matter what the others said. She knew she was the best. She could use the sword, axe, spear and sais with perfection, and her eleven reflected that. She was the undisputed leader of the pack, and it made her so happy. She was in her room, relaxing and letting Avoxes wait on her. She did not need to train, and like hell she was going to watch any reruns that were on. She did not need to. She was Angel Braun. She lay on her bed, happy about going into the Arena tomorrow. She had the trust of the Fours, and she was ready to betray them as soon as they were no longer useful. She would win. This would be her year! District One was about to get their ninth Victor!
Her cockiness ended up being her downfall, with one of her allies from Four pushing her into the lava as they ran, saving himself.
Jewel Royal was sitting next to her Aunt Harp, watching reruns of all the Hunger Games. Harp was telling her to take note on how each previous District One tribute died, and how they could have prevented it. It was not the most fun, having to watch a few members of her family die on screen, but she knew it would be fine. If she learned how each of these people died, and learned how to avoid them, then she could win. She trusted Harp with everything, and was willing to do anything she said to earn the Victory. Angel was too preoccupied being the prissy little princess, thinking that she was better than anyone and could easily kill everyone. Jewel was sure the eleven she earned was gained through doing her private session nude. Jewel had beaten Angel in all sparing session, yet had somehow earned a ten, when Angel had an eleven. Jewel was sure that, when it came down to it, she could easily beat Angel, and be the last Career standing. As long as the outer alliance was taken down quickly, Jewel would be the strongest competitor left by far. Then it would be just a simple case of killing the final few competitors. If she played the game like Harp, she would win.
Just a shame that Twelve boy had to lead her to the edge of the Arena. That bloody axe took away all her deserved glory.
Titanium Montgomery was really excited to go into the Games. His family had not yet got a Victor. It was so embarrassing that eight of the other lesser families had managed to win while the Montgomerys, easily the best out of all Noble families, had none. He was sitting with his mentor Luxor. Out of all Ones' Victors, Titanium trusted Luxor the most, as he was the first male Victor from One. Titanium was embarrassed about another thing that the rest of his family did not seem tom be. It was the fact that six of the eight Victors of One were female. How was this possible. The men were better at fighting, and yet had been killed by those bitches. Even worse, the pack was led by Angel and the second in command was a girl from Four. How was this allowed. He was not happy, and was aiming to kill each girl in the alliance, to show them they were weaker than him. He would win easily.
Titanium was one of the last three Careers, but when he tried to attack Jewel and Prasio, the girls killed him swiftly, leaving him in seventh.
Dasher Portescue was an orphan. His parents had both died in a mining accident when he was younger, and he had gone to the orphanage. Luckily for him, he was strong and was recruited into the Academy. Mainly so the Nobles had someone to fight. He always put up a good fight, and was one of the strongest people in the Academy. Too bad he would never go in, as the Nobles always volunteered instead. That is why it came as a shock to him when his name was pulled and no Noble volunteered. He was now sitting with Platinum, who was the only one willing to mentor him. Platinum was quite nice, and was no where near as snooty as the other Nobles. She actually talked to Dasher and gave him advice. Thanks to her, and his undeniable skill, he was in the Career pack. The other Ones did not like him very much, but the Twos and Fours all liked him better than the other Ones. Dasher and Platinum were now going over last minute plans, with the idea of Dasher teaming up with the Twos and Four to kill the Ones when needed. Dasher smiled, thinking that if he played his cards right, he could win. But he knew it would be a struggle to do so.
Dasher ended up separating from the Careers with a boy from Two and Four. However, he was killed only a day later when Haymitch slashed his chest open five times.
District Two:
Freya Frostwatch was born mute. She had never been able to talk. However, that never stopped her from being a strong competitor in the Academy. She had learned how to lip read, do sign language and communicate through facial expressions. She was also heading into the Arena with her best friend, who knew how to talk to her. Freya was sparing with Lyme, her mentor and trainer. The two were grappling at and fighting each other. It was close, but eventually Lymes' skill ended up with her being on top, and Freya losing after Lyme 'killed' her with swipe across her throat.
"That was good," signed Lyme. "You're strong. The mistake you made was not using your speed to your advantage. You're quick, so when someone tried to roll on top of you, use that momentum to roll further, and end up on top of them." Freya nodded, and stood up. She shook out her arms, before moving into the position to show she was ready for a second round. Lyme smiled at her, before quickly diving at her. This time, Freya manged to beat Lyme. This made Freya smile and raise her hands up in victory. Lyme tried to launch a surprise attack on her, but Freya noticed at the last second and, using Lymes' advice, ended up on top and winning the third round.
The volcano stopped Freyas plans. She was carried away be a lava stream, not leaving any trace of her behind.
Prasio Wrackopal was Brutus' younger sister. She was proud to have a Victor for a brother, and he had been giving her private combat lessons to prepare her for the games. She knew that the outliers would hate these Games, but they never saw the honour in the Games. Two did know, as did One and Four, but to a lesser extent. Two knew how much honour the Hunger Games gave each and every tribute. She was prepares to fight, or die honourably trying. After earning a ten in training, she had spent her interview talking about her life in the Victors' Village, how it had felt watching Brutus in the Arena, and how much of an honour it was to compete in the Quarter Quell. Now, she was lying on her bed, in her brothers arms. This was the one place she felt she could cry.
"I don't want to die. Please Brutus, I really don't want to die," she wept.
"You won't. I will be here for you the moment you get out. I promise. You won't die," he whispered back.
Prasio made it to sixth place, before being killed by Jewel after she killed Titanium. She lay dying for over a minute, as she thought about how much she regretted volunteering.
Demos Harpison was not the chosen volunteer. Demos had been walking to the reaping, when he saw the person he knew was the chosen one get into a bad car crash. It was obvious he was dead, and could therefore not volunteer. Demos was stunned and knew that now someone unprepared would go into the Arena, so when a scrawny thirteen year old was reaped, he shouted the words and headed up to the stage. Enobarbus was mad at first, but ended up being told what had happened, and praised Demos for his bravery. Enobarbus was now with Demos, as he threw a selection of different knives at the dart board in the room. Due to his friendship with the President, Enobarbus had managed to get knives into the room, and Demos was now practising with throwing knives, kitchen knives and dining knives to get a feel to the different types of knives that he may find in the Arena, as knives were Demos' weakness.
Demos never needed to use his skills with the knives, as he found his sword. However, that sword did not help him when he was swallowed by the lava as it came through a rock, directly into his face.
Marcus Gorsha was sitting at a table with Lupus, who had chosen Marcus as his final tribute before he retired. They were playing a board game Lupus had found called 'betrayal'. Lupus was using it to teach Marcus about deception as lie, as the point of the game was to trick the other players into thinking you do not have a specific card, even if you do. Lupus was testing Marcus, with how well he could lie, and tell when someone else was lying. Every time Marcus failed, Lupus would show him the 'tell' that he was using, going through a long list of different ones, to show Marcus how easy it was to tell when most people were lying. He also warned Marcus of his tells, and over the course of the evening, Marcus learned to hide his 'tell', so it would not be clear if he was lying or telling the truth.
Marcus got the chance to betray his allies when he killed one of the Four girls, and ran with one of the boys and Dasher. He was then killed by Maysilees' dart, leaving him in tenth place.
District Three:
Mac Hornburn was worried. While he was one of the most intelligent tributes to ever be in the Hunger Games, even rivalling his mentor, Beetee, in IQ, he also only had one arm. He had born with only one, so it never had really affected him much, as he did not have to adjust to losing a limb like so many other citizens of the Districts. Now however, he was massively worried. The fact he only had one arm, put him at a major disadvantage compared to the other Tributes. Due to his IQ, he knew that the only other two tributes with only one arm had both died, one in the Bloodbath and one in a fight with the eventual Victor. Beetee had talked to the Head Gamemaker, but Mac was not allowed to have a basic prosthetic arm in the Arena, as they Gamemaker claimed it would put him at an advantage, no matter how much Beetee tried to argue. Mac would have to manage with only one arm. So, on the night, Mac was practicing using a knife in his hand. He knew that it would not be the exact same in the Arena, but he also knew that any little practice can help him massively.
Mac did not even get his hands on a knife. Hooker was next to him at the beginning, and harpooned Mac withing ten seconds.
Zekel Lorchnin sat on the rooftop with Gates, looking out over the city. Zekel was Gates' nephew, and wanted to spend time alone with his Uncle before being launched into the Arena. Zekel had been slowly realising he was not like the rest of the boys in his school, as he had never wanted a girlfriend. Instead, he had had a crush on his beast friend of twelve years. He had never told his friend, nor come out to anyone. Until he was there, on the roof talking with Gates. Zekel was quite nervous about coming out to his Uncle, but Gates accepted him instantly. Gates and Zekel talked about Zekels' life and crush. Gates told his nephew about the life of Jack, the Victor from Seven, who was gay as well, and how he lived happily with his husband in Seven, so it was possible for Zekel to get back, and ask out the boy he liked. Gates promised to be there for him when the time came, and always care for him.
Zekel almost made it back, but he was killed by the squirrel mutts, leaving him in third place.
Fraime Willow was different to all other Three tributes. She was not the most intelligent person. However, she was unusually muscular and fight-filled for a Three tribute. Pluto, who as the oldest took two Tributes to mentor, did not really know how to mentor her, as she worked in a different way to all other tributes he had mentored, but he tried his best anyway. She however, refused all his advice. She made an alliance with other outliers, forming a six strong Anti-Career pack. Pluto had told her many times about how likely it was for them to all die in the Bloodbath, but she just ignored him, staying in her room and exercising. She went through push ups, crunches and burpees, making sure she was at peak physical strength and fully ready for the fight that was coming. She was convinced her strength, and the strength of her allies would allow her to emerge victorious.
Fraime was tackled by Titanium in the Bloodbath and, like the rest of her allies, was killed. Titanium slit her throat quickly with a dagger.
Mouse Ceyrie was like her namesake, small and quiet. She was only twelve, but she had still scored a seven. She was quick, and was great at camouflage. She was also highly intelligent. She was sitting in a corner of the main floor with Pluto, working on an invention. Although she knew she would not be able to take it into the Arena, she thought it would be good practice to make something, so if she got the opportunity in the Arena, she could remake it. Pluto was next to her judging her on how quickly she could put together something, and how good was the result. She only had a select few materials and a select amount of time as selected by Pluto, to test her thoughts under pressure. One of the times, she managed to make a pulse gun that, when test fired, shattered the window leading out onto the balcony. This did cause the escort to shout at Mouse, who then ran to her room and cried.
Mouse managed to get some electrical parts, and even invent a pulse gun. Too bad she was thirsty, and took a drink from one of the rivers.
District Four
Hooker Killian was sitting in the corner of the main room, with a good book. His mentor, Shai, was sitting next to him, having introduced Hooker to the 'Phoenix Wilde' book series. Phoenix was a Capitol detective, who went around Panem, solving seemingly impossible cases. It was a Capitol propaganda piece, as Phoenix was the Capitol, and all the killers turned out to be heartless rebels, but Shai still enjoyed the series. Hooker was reading the first book in the series, where Phoenix went to District Seven to investigate how the Mayor was stabbed in a locked room. Eventually, it was revealed that one of the butlers, who hated the Mayor after he reported his rebellious sister, used a secret passage behind the fireplace to get in and out of the room. Hooker enjoyed the book, and hoped to read the other when he got out. Shai used the opportunity while Hooker was reading to teach him some of the tactics that Phoenix used in the novel to find who was lying and how to notice things that no one else would.
Hooker teamed up with Dasher and Marcus, running away from the pack. He was killed shortly after when they attacked Haymitch.
Ariel Hinjuis was curled up on the sofa, sipping some hot chocolate while watching a rerun of the most popular sitcom in the Capitol 'Harley and Julia' with her Mentor Coral. It was about two childhood friends who ended up moving into the same apartment together after they lost a Hunger Games bet. They end up falling in love and having a family. In Ariels opinion, it was awful, but she knew that considering how shallow the Capitol audience were, it was probably enough for them. She thought about how she could transform the game she plays with her friends into a reality show. The game was called 'Decievers', where two of the group were the deceivers, and each round they 'killed' one of the innocents. Then, there was a vote where everyone, whether deceiver or innocent, got a vote, and they had to vote out someone they thought was a deceiver. It went on until it was the final two, then it was either a win for the innocents, or deceivers. Ariel thought that it would be a good training game to introduce to the Academy at the very least, and started making plans.
Ariel did not even get the chance to deceive anyone in the Arena, as she was killed by Marcus before she got the chance.
Robin Westport was the weakest Career. He knew this. He had scored an eight, while the rest of the alliance had all scored nine, tens and even and eleven! He did not understand how Angel, of all people, scored an eleven. He would have put his money on Freya earning an elven. Although it did not matter to him entirely. Not when his place in the pack was in jeopardy. Since the fifteenth Hunger Games, and Career that scores an eight was booted from the Pack right after the Bloodbath, and had to fend for themselves. They were not killed, just sent away. Out of the twenty Careers that had happened to, only one made it back, his mentor Noah. Noah had been extremely lucky though, having an Arena designed like an abandoned shipyard, so he was right at home in it. There was not a guarantee that the Arena would be suited to Robin especially as Four had won two years previously. So Robin was scared that he would be kicked out of the pack. He made a vow to kill three outliers in the Bloodbath, to show the rest of the Careers he deserved to remain in the pack.
Robin ended up with the highest Bloodbath kills count of the pack, at five. He was welcomed into the pack, but the volcano erupted a few days later, and the lava killed him just as quickly as he killed the outliers.
Aqua Minnow was talking to her mentor, Sandy, when Mags called for her from Syrens' room. Syren was in a bad way during these Games, as it was another Quarter Quell and, after the horrible things she experienced in the previous one, she was scared that it would happed again. All of Fours' Victors had come to the Capitol, and Mesudia, Mags, Molly and Chloe had been taking it turns to be with Syren, making sure she was never alone, just like they did after she got back from her Games according to Molly. Now though, Sandy was going to Syren. Mags came over to sit next to Aqua.
"Why is Sandy needed?" asked Aqua.
"Syrena and Sandy are quite close. Sandy is the only tribute Syrens mentored, so they have quite a close relationship. Now then, what were you two talking about. Sandy asked me to carry on the conversation." She replied.
"We were just going over targets, and who to watch out for in the Games. I thought about the boy from Twelve, Haymitch, as he scored an eight. He could be dangerous," said Aqua seriously.
"Yes, he could be one to watch out for," muttered Mags thoughtfully.
Aqua almost made it away from the lava, but a knife thrown by a Six boy caused to fall backwards into the burning river. The alliance never bought her theory about how dangerous Haymitch could be.
District Five
Fahran Peralta was sitting with his aunt, Porter. They were sitting at the table, playing poker with the escort and Fahrans' prep team and stylist, who had been Porters' twelve years before. Fahran was proving to be a natural at the game, managing to cause two members of the prep team to loose all their money in only a few hands. The remaining four people played for a while, with the escort loosing next, followed by the third member of the prep team. That left Fahran and Porter. The two of them carried on playing for a long time. Eventually though, Porter managed to get a straight flush, while Fahran only had a flush.
"Damn," said Fahran.
"Sorry Fahran. I have years more experience," replied Porter. She collected her money happily. "Tell you what. You survive, and I will teach you how to play better. You're already insanely good, but there is still room for you to improve."
Fahran agreed, and decided it was time to head to bed, knowing she needed to get a good night's rest in preparation for the Hunger Games tomorrow.
Fahran was the first Tribute to be killed in the volcano explosion. He had been camped on the top of the mountain, and fell into the lava as the top blew apart.
Dahlia Rustic was being quizzed by Shocker on her knowledge of poisonous plants and bugs, and how to recognise how something may be poisonous in the Arena. Shocker would show Dahlia a flashcard with a picture of a berry, fruit or animal on it, and Dahlia would have to tell him the name of the item, and whether it was poisonous or not. There were one hundred items that Dahlia had to memorise, and Shocker was hoping for her to remember them all. Both tributes last year had died from poison, so Shocker was determined to not let that happen this year. Dahlia was having difficulty with it, but was slowly getting there. As she was twelve, she was going a little slower than the other District Five tributes did. After the other three tributes had gone to bed, Dahlia finally scored one hundred percent. With this, Shocker was happy, and sent her to get some sleep. Dahlia slept that night, with her mind racing through all the poisonous things she had seen.
Dahlia used her knowledge of poison to last through the Arena. She ate food from the Horn, and the little from Sponsor presents. She eventually died at Jewels hands in fourth place.
Astro Jakob was nervously fiddling with his tie. His father, Dylan, came over and clapped a hand on his shoulder.
"It will be fine son. You're going to do great. Now, go out there and get married," he said, smiling. Astro knew it was a strained smile, as he was heading into the Games tomorrow, but he was still excited.
Astro had been reaped, alongside his fiancé. While he had cried for a bit, after a long talk with both Adrianna and Dylan, he and Adrianna decided to get married on the final night where they both knew they would be alive.
Half an hour later, he was standing in front of Adrianna, while Jakob was standing next to them, walking them through the vows.
"Do you Astro Jakob, take Adrianna Martinez to be your lawfully wedded wife?" Asked Dylan.
"I do," he said, smiling.
"Do you, Adrianna Martinez, take Astro Jakob to be your lawfully wedded husband?" asked Dylan.
"I do" she replied, grinning like an idiot.
"Then, by the power invested in me by the glorious Capitol and President Snow, I formally announce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride," Dylan said.
The two kissed, and the room exploded in applause, with the three Victors, other two tributes, the escort and all prep teams and stylists clapping.
Astro ran into the Bloodbath while his wife stayed away. Astro grabbed a backpack, but before he could get away, Robin skewered him with his sword.
Arianna Jakob beamed as she looked at her husband. They walked over to the sofa together, and Astro pulled Adrianna into his arms as they snuggled up on the sofa. She sighed happily as she leant against her husband, basking in his closeness and warmth. While she was very happy to have finally married her favourite person in the world, she was also scared and sad. She knew that either, one would loose the other or they will both die. She was thinking of a way to get both of them to be joined Victors. If they found poisonous berries, and were the last two, they could threaten to commit a joined suicide, leaving the Capitol without a Victor in their Second Quarter Quell, or have two Victors. In her mind, it would make sense to have two Victors, as there was two times the number of tributes. She was about to turn to Astro to suggest they do this plan, then decided against it. She knew that Astro would not agree to it at this moment, and only probably agree to it when it was just them. Instead, she stood up, and lead Astro to her room. She was determined to enjoy one final night with him when they did not have to fear for their lives.
Arianna ran towards Astro when she saw him die. Robin heard her coming, and quickly spun around and behead Arianna.
District Six
Jeeper Hope was talking to some Peacekeepers. They were outside Michigans' door, preventing him from leaving. Ever since what had happened to Maeve before the Games had come out, anyone caught selling or buying people in the Districts would be taken to the Capitol and turned into an Avox. However, Michigan had ignored these laws, and Amalie was someone that he had bought of her parents. Jeeper had found this out when Amalie had told him while Michigan was in the bathroom. Jeeper had saved that information and, during his interview right after Michigan, revealed it. As Michigan could not be turned into an Avox as he was a tribute, the Gamemakers decided to break both his legs and send him into the Games. After the interviews, Jeeper had gone to the Careers, and asked them to kill Michigan painfully. Robin had agreed, and also promised to let Amalie survive the Bloodbath. Jeeper was now explaining what he knew to the Peacekeepers, including the past when Maeve was sold. Jeeper had been working with the Peacekeepers back in Six to take down the still existing slave trade that was there. He believed, with Michigan caught, that the ringleader was about to die. Jeeper 2was considered one of the best thirteen year olds in the Games history.
Jeeper was great at camouflage and grabbed a kit from the horn. He managed to hide until the top eight, when Jewel found him, and kill him.
Amalie Naftali was curled up, crying into Illinois arms. Michigan had forced her to volunteer if he got reaped, and die to save him. In exchange, he would allow her younger sister to live in the Victors Village. While she really did not want what happened to her and Maeve to happen to Sabine. She made the decision to tell one of the Victors about what Michigan was doing, but was too scared to, as Michigan never left her alone with them, insisting that Illinois mentor both of them. The only time she had to tell anyone was in the training room, telling Jeeper. Now, with Michigan locked in his room, and being confirmed as dying tomorrow, Amalie felt she could properly let all her emotions out for the first time in six years. She felt safe. The other thing that made her feel much better was the confirmation that her sister was safe, and out of harms way. As he parents had been arrested, Sabine, at the request of Illinois, had been placed in his home, under the care of his wife. They planned to adopt Sabine if Amalie died, so she would have a good life.
Amalies' luck ended when the cave she was hiding in was blocked by the lava, causing her to die slowly via smoke inhalation.
Michigan Fishant pulled and yanked at the restraints holding him down to the bed, snarling at the Peacekeepers who were in the room with him, pointing their guns at him. How dare they all do this to him! His slave as well! He had bought that bitch. He had every right to do whatever he wanted to her. He vowed to find her in the Arena and get his revenge. He would force her to live for days, doing what he was allowed to do as her owner. After he won, he would buy her younger sister off her parent, supplying them with free morphling for life. He could just give them tainted morphling to kill them shortly afterwards to save him money. Once he had the younger sister, he would keep her for a good few years, and get some children to raise into the next set of drug lords and slavers. Screw the Capitols laws. What he wanted, he got.
A new Peacekeeper came I, holding a hammer and a rag. This new Peacekeeper wasn't wearing a helmet so Michigan could see his face. He stuffed the gag into Michigans mouth, smiled at Michigan, before bringing the hammer down on Michigans legs and knees, shattering both. Michigan screamed through the gag.
"Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favour," said the Peacekeeper before leaving. For the first time in his life, Michigan felt dread. They were not going to let him live.
Robin fulfilled his promise to Jeeper and Amalie, and killed Michigan by stabbing him in several places, and letting him slowly bleed to death, ensuring he came back occasionally to inflict more pain.
Arizona Flecker was just sitting on the balcony with Maeve, not knowing what to do. She had thought it would just be normal when she was reaped. Well, normal other for the fact there were twice the number of tributes. But, of course, Michigan just had to turn out to be an evil creature, and Jeeper found out, and he told everyone, and it all just spiralled from there. Arizona knew she had been completely forgotten by the Capitol, even though District Six had a lot of focus on it. Jeeper was the hero who revealed it all, Amalie was the poor victim and Michigan was the villain. Meanwhile, there was nothing massively special about Arizona. Sure, she was a fast runner, but compared to the revelation about the other three Six Tributes? That was nothing. Maeve had been freaked since Jeepers interview, and Arizona was sitting next to her, talking to ensure that she did not use morphling. They were talking about Austin and Carlow, Maeves children. Austin was the owner of a wheel factory, and Carlow was the mayor, so both were doing quite good for themselves, and helped anyone how was addicted to morphling whenever they could, especially their mother.
Arizona was found by the Careers on the third day, and Prasio dived forward, slitting her throat with her daggers.
District Seven
Juniper Harpbow was punching the boxing bag in the District Seven floor. He was in a large alliance, and wanted to try and get a little more strength before he headed into the Arena, where strength would be very important. He had score a seven on training, something he was relatively happy about. While the Careers had scored more, along with a boy from Twelve, he had still scored higher than most of the other Tributes. He had offered Haymitch a spot in their alliance, but he had brushed them off, as he thought the idea of an alliance was ridiculous, due to the fact that they would have to kill each other, if they even survived the Bloodbath. While a few of his allies were pissed at Haymitch, Juniper understood what he meant. He knew that only one person could survive, and was already planning ways to kill his allies when the time came. However, he had to be careful as Cormac from Eleven was the leader of the pack, being the strongest and related to two Victors. That did not stop Juniper from plotting his death though.
Juniper tried to attack Aqua in the Bloodbath, but she heard it, and spun around, and slashed her trident across his chest.
Holly Collins was lying on her bed, looking at her tribute token. It was a locket, with a picture of her and her son, taking two month ago when she gave birth. In Seven, it was quite common for girls to have a child at eighteen or nineteen. Normally, after the couple has survived their finals reaping, or the younger person in the pair has survived their final reaping, the couple 'celebrate' and have a child. Hollys' boyfriend was a year older than her, and they had celebrated after he survived last year's reaping. Holly hadn't planned to have a child, but there was nothing she could do. She had left her man with their son, Jaxon, in Seven and was hoping to get back to them. To give her a better chance, her mother, Sycamore, had told everyone about her son, and showed them all pictures of Jaxon. Holly had also talk about him in her interview. She had also refused to join the outer District alliance. The only thing that Holly wasn't worried about was someone looking after her son. If she did not make it back, either her boyfriend, or Sycamore would take care of Jaxon. He would be safe.
Holly got quite far through the Games, lasting until the seventh day. However, Maysilees' poison darts proved too much for her body to handle.
Maple Everlark was playing the guitar in his room. District Seven was well known for their music, as was Four. Maple had started playing the guitar at four, when his parents bought him one as a gift after they got promoted. Since then, he had regularly attended the Victors Music School, and learned to play. With a few of his friends in the District (Blight, Max, Rose and Axea), they had formed a band. Maple and Max did guitar, Rose on keyboard, Axea on drums and Blight as lead singer. They had released multiple songs, one even being fairly popular in the Capitol. However, they were stupid and, when they thought no one was listening, made a song mocking President Snow. As Max, Rose and Axea were all nineteen, they could not be reaped. However, Maple was eighteen and Blight was sixteen. If Juniper, Blight older brother, hadn't volunteered then Blight would be in the Games. Maple knew it was rigged, so told his bandmates to write a song praising the Hunger Games for the Victory Tour, and play it for whoever won, as he knew the President would order the Head Gamemaker to ensure he did not win. Maple hoped the song would be successful in preventing Blight from being rigged into the Games.
Mason was right. He did not survive the Games. Angel saw him skirting around the Bloodbath, and let an arrow fly right through his neck.
Cherry Rainbow was drinking. She had been addicted to alcohol for the past year, after her sister died of her illness. She had now lost everyone. Her mom had died giving birth to her brother, who had died as an infant. He dad died from alcohol poisoning a few years later, when Cherry was ten. She had to work from that age to provide for her and her sister. She took out tesserae did everything she could to earn money. The only line she did not cross was selling herself. She would not do that no matter what, preferring to go to the orphanage. Luckily for her, she never had to sell herself, as she landed a good job as the sous chef in a bakery at fifteen. Unfortunately, it was not enough to pay her sisters growing medical bills, and she died last year, shortly after the reapings. Cherry had turned to alcohol after that, and had been drinking heavily since. She did not care about fighting, and was looking forwards to dying, as she would finally be with her family again.
Cherry had a bad hangover going into the Arena, but still made it through the first day. However, when she went to sniff a flower, she inhaled the poison directly, and quickly passed away.
District Eight
Burlap Mallow was sitting at the main table, teaching the escort, Magenta, how to play chess. She was considered one of the best in her District at it, having come second the previous year, losing to Woofs' son, and having won the District championship the year before that. The escort had watched the championship, having taken an interest in it when her daughter, Portia, proved to be a natural. Magenta was now hoping to learn how to play the game so she could better connect with Portia. It was proving to be much more complicated than she thought, but she was getting it. Burlap had been teaching her on and off since the train, with Woof helping, as he was the one who taught Burlap. Magenta had been the escort for Eight for ten years, and had turned from a loyalist, to one of the first Capitol rebels. Woof and Spool knew this, but the tributes did not. After finishing Magentas lesson, Burlap promised to teach her more if she won, and promised to play Portia. She then headed to her room, where she was determined to get some sleep.
Burlap ran into the Bloodbath to try and get a weapon; however, Jewel saw her, and brought her axe down into her head.
Capri Hireas did not like Lucet. He had been dating his cousin for two years, but had got a little too controlling. Capri had managed to convince Calico to leave Lucet, and had since been near her whenever they were in public, as he did not trust Lucet to leave her alone. Capri had seen the look on Lucets' face when he was reaped alongside him, and knew Lucet was planning to kill Capri. He did not want to talk about it in the interview, as he did not think Lucet deserved attention, or wanted to make Lucet seem like a threat. Capri had instead talked about his alliance with Mannox from Ten and Lee from Eleven. Their aim was to collect supplies and run towards the lower areas of the Arena, as they reasoned that was where the water would be. This was a lie, and they were actually planning to do the opposite, but misdirection was a key part of their plan. Lucet had talked about his 'girlfriend' still pretending he and Calico were together.
Capri and his allies were on the mountain when it blew its' top. They sprinted down the volcano, but Capri tripped and was quickly swallowed by the lava.
Lucet Cummings was so glad he was reaped along with Capri. The bastard had stolen his girlfriend from him. He had convinced her to leave him. He could still remember the day when Calico had broken up with him, saying that he was too controlling. He had just wanted her to stop flirting with other guys. But she could just not stop doing that. Every time she saw any other guy, she flirted with and batted her eyelashes at him. Then, two days after breaking up with him, Lucet had seen Calico with Capri. He had been in shock, but had not said anything. He had just vowed revenge. He had plotted to get Capri fired from his job, then find a way to ensure he would never work again. Then Calico would leave him and come back to Lucet, who would have a decent job. It was the perfect plan, only messed up when he was reaped. Thankfully, Capri had been reaped as well. Lucet was now planning to kill Capri in any way he could.
Lucet ran towards Capri in the Bloodbath. Dasher, who had his sword at this point, shoved Lucet to the ground, and gutted him.
Millie Withers threw up again. She had caught a nasty bug a day before the Reaping, and could not keep anything down. Spool was sitting with her, holding her hair back and comforting her. She was Spools' younger sister, being born two years after he won, so there was a seventeen year age gap between the two. For that reason, Millie had always seen Spool as an uncle more than a brother. They had bonded quite well, with Millies' innocence helping Spool out of his drug induced state, and getting him clean from his addiction. Now, Spool was terrified Millie was going to die, and Millie was scared that when she died, Spool would go back to drugs.
"Spool," said Millie weakly.
"Yes? Are you okay?" replied Spool.
"Let's not fool ourselves. I am going to die and I-" started Millie.
"No! Stop that. You're not going to die," said Spool forcefully.
"Spool," said Millie again. "It's going to be okay. I am going to die. But I need you to promise me that you will not use drugs after I die. Please Spool, do not go back to drugs." Millie pleaded.
Spool looked at her. "I- I will not use drugs again. I promise you Millie. Just please. Please try and win," he said, crying.
Millie smiled at him, before standing up, and shakily walking to her bed, to try and get some sleep.
With how sick she was, Millie stumbled towards the Cornucopia. It was all too easy for Freya to slice her in half with her sword.
District Nine
Herman Bartells was doing push ups in his room, trying to use his body weight to get a little more muscle, He had been slightly overweight his entire life as he worked in a bakery, and therefore got food every day. Most others in his district struggled to get enough food. Compared to Six or Twelve, they had plenty of food, but it was not enough for the work they did. Herman however, had more food than most of the District. The Mayor, Peacekeepers and Victors had more, but Herman and his family was still very well off. With all the food he had, Herman was actually overweight, so had been focused for the past year on loosing weight. Now, he had been accepted into the Outer Alliance. He had earned a seven in training with his knife skills, and hoped to use them to kill a Career. He aimed to kill Prasio, for Brutus had killed his best friends three years ago in his Games. Herman did one final push up, before collapsing into his bed.
Herman ran towards the horn to grab a weapon but Demos, who was near him, grabbed him and swiftly snapped his neck, making him the first death of the Games.
Sheaf Lux refused any mentoring. Her twin siblings had been reaped two years ago, and both died. Mizar and Laurel had failed to save either of them, so Sheaf did not trust them do help him. She would go without a mentor. She had allied with the other Outer District tributes. She did not want Herman to be in the group, but she was outvoted, and Herman was included. Sheaf just prayed that he would die quickly, so she did not have to care about another Nine tribute. Instead, she focused on training her skills with the sickle and scythe. Her parents had fallen into depression after loosing two children, and Sheaf was the sole breadwinner of the family, taking out tesserae for her parents, herself and five younger siblings. She also worked in the fields twelve hours a day to earn more money. This had enhanced her skills with the sickle and scythe and made her strong. She knew she had it in her to win, but it would be hard. If she had been reaped last year, she could have won, but she wasn't, and now had to face twice the usual tributes. It would be tough, but Sheaf was sure she could do it.
Sheaf almost managed to land a killing blow on Dasher in the bloodbath. However, before she could, Marcus saw, and impaled her on his sword.
Rake Kendall was going over final plans with Mizar. He had refused a place in the Outer Alliance, and vowed to go solo, as he had agreed to his mentor. Mizar had seen too many tribute from Nine die at the hands of their own allies, and wanted Rake, who he thought had the best chance out of the Nines this year, to not ally and go solo. He would aim to avoid the Bloodbath unless he saw something he could easily grab, go solo and emerge for the final to win just like Porter, Spool, Pasture and Seeder had all done. Rake was hoping it would work, but out of the last ten years, the Careers had won eight of them, so he did not have much confidence. Only Beetee and Chaff had won in the fortieth and forty fifth respectively. In that same time, One and Two had got three Victors, and Four had got two. The odds were not in Rakes' favour, but he would make sure that he could put them as much in his favour as possible, by following what Mizar told him to do.
Rake almost made it out of the Bloodbath with a pack, but Angel let an arrow fly straight into his leg. Rake collapsed and could not do anything as Angel walked over holding her knife.
Zara Litin walker round and round the Nine floor, reciting facts about all tribute from Nine from the last twenty-four years, and how they could have avoided their death, to Laurel. Since her Games, District Nine had not got a Victor, and Laurel was desperately wanting to have one. She had watched fifty District Nine tribute dying, mentoring twenty-five herself. The work in Nine was hard. Children as young as twelve regularly went out into the field to cut the crops. As technology was rarely allowed however, this meant they had to use sickles, scythes and knives. This gave Nine an advantage in the Arena, and what usually led to Seven, Nine and Eleven teaming up. Most of the time, they died in the Bloodbath, but Mizar and Laurel had managed to get out of the Arena using their skills. No one from Nine had done it since, as they were always cut down. In the last ten year, Nine had thirteen in the top eight, and three in the final battle, but they all had died. Laurel was very annoyed at this, and was hopeful that this year, finally, would be Nines' year to win.
Prasio found Zara hiding at the back of the Cornucopia, hoping to surprise a Career. She hurled two knives into Zara neck and head, killing her instantly.
District Ten
Gavin Hither was part of an alliance. He had collected Mouse, Dahlia, Jeeper, Rake, Zara, and Rosemary together. They were all twelve or thirteen and Gavin was eighteen. He vowed to protect as many of the children as he could. He did this as he was an orphan, and at the orphanage he lived at, the caretakers did not care for them in any way. This had left Gavin and the other older orphans to take over and take care of all the kids. Gavin was the oldest, so he was the leader of the orphanage. He was an adult, but as he could still be reaped, he was not allowed to be the head of the orphanage officially until after his final reaping. However, he had been reaped instead, so Gavins' best friend, Maizey, was now the leader of the orphanage. Gavin did not have confidence in being the Victor, as he could never bring himself to hurt someone, unless it was to protect someone else. If it came down to him and one other person, he would lose.
Gavin saw Hooker about to kill Mouse in the Bloodbath, so ran towards him. Gavin tackled Hooker, but could not do anything else as Hooker shoved his harpoon through Gavins eye.
Filet Marchtin was practising hand to hand combat with his Aunt Pasture. Filet had never been very strong, but Pasture was hoping to at least reach her the basics, so if someone attacked her in the Arena, she could fight back. Pasture was showing Filet how to block and retaliate. It was difficult, as Filet was quite weak, but she was doing fairly well. They were standing on the carpet, and Olga, the Victor from Two, was there as well to show Filet how to fight. Pasture would attack Olga, and Olga would defend, and teach Filet how to do it. Pasture and Olga respected each other as each one had killed the person they cared about in the Games. Pasture had killed the person who tortures Olgas older sister and Olga had killed the Career who had beheaded her nephew. The two Victors were good friends, and that led Olga to help Pasture occasionally. Now, both Victors were training Filet to fight. She was learning, and by the time she went to bed, Filet knew many moves she could do to throw someone off her, and block attacks.
Filet did manage to fight someone off, killed Logan in the Bloodbath. That did not mean anything when she was running from the lava, and was tripped by Lee, falling into the burning river.
Mannox Johnson was sitting with his dad, Steer, and watching Capitol TV. They were in a ad break, and Mannox was weirded out by the ads. One of them was a commercial for a new cereal, where a pair of little kids caught a bunch of fairies, cut them in half and ate them. Mannox stared at the screen in a mixture of shock and disgust. The next advert was for a holiday to the Forty Eighth Arena, which was a holiday resort. The barely had to change anything, as the Arena was built, specifically to hold tours afterwards, as this would be the first Arena that could have tours. The advert said:
"Come to the lush resort, where Coral Banker killed three people to come out as the Victor of the Forty-Eighth Hunger Games! Go into the catacombs and be raised up, exactly like the tributes. Recreate your favourite moments from the Games. Don't worry parents, the weapons are fake, we wouldn't want anyone to be hurt now would we? Sleep in the luxurious beds, dine in one of the restaurants. Swim in the sea, or the pool where the boy from Six was killed by piranhas. They are friendly now, and won't bite. Meet Coral herself for autographs and pictures. Book now, just 599.99 credits for an adult, and 350 for a child!"
Steer shook his head in disgust, and turned off the TV.
Mannox was caught by the lava as he ran as fast as he could. It caught his ankles, and made him topple into the river, leaving nothing behind.
Hayley MaCue was in her room, writing her letter to her family. On the first day, tributes are given paper to write letter to their family, telling them anything they want. They would be used to know who to talk to during the final eight interviews. She had already written the ones to her family and friends, now it was just her closest friend, Hazel, the one she had had a crush on for years. Hayley had never liked boys, and had faked liking a boy in her year. They had broken up a year ago when he realised he was gay, and came out to her. She told him she was gay as well, and they agreed to fake their relationship more, as they knew Eleven was one of the two Districts that was still highly homophobic, the other being Eight. Now however, Hayley could write what she wanted, and Hazel did not have to tell anyone what the letter said. It took her a while to write it, but eventually she got the words down, and confessed how much she loved Hazel. She hoped to come back, and Hazel would feel the same way.
Hayley died in the lava, but she openly declared her feeling before, when she realised she was about to die. Seeder made it her mission to ensure the LGBT community was accepted in Eleven in honour of Hayley.
District Eleven
Cormac Fieldgreen was sitting with his grandmother and uncle. He wasn't surprised to be reaped, as some fieldworkers had staged a small rebellion in response to the Quell, and his father was one of the workers. Being the son of a rebel, and related to two Victors made it clear to Cormac that he was rigged into the Games, but he knew better than to say anything. He was strong though, and was the leader of the Outer Alliance. Some people called them the Anti-Careers, but Cormac knew they were not strong enough to take on a twelve strong Career pack. Instead, he had planned for them to run away, and attack the horn later in the Games when there was only going to be one or two people guarding the horn. Cormac had been trained by Orchid since he was five, and Chaff as well for the last five years. It had been privately in the basement of Orchids house, as if they did it publicly they would be punished, but Cormac had been trained well.
Cormac was the only person in his alliance to survive the Bloodbath. However, he was found by the pack hiding on the volcano. Angel stabbed him through the heart, just before the volcano exploded.
Rosemary Crimmond had not expected to find love when she was reaped, but there was something about Logan that made her relaxed and happy. They had spent almost the entire time in the Capitol together, even showering together the evening before, as they both knew they would die soon, so may as well experience love before dying. They were currently lying in Logans' bed together, with Rosemary listening to Logans heartbeat, and feeling his hands play with her hair and rub her arm. Rosemary sighed in happiness, and snuggled in close to Logan, who kissed her on the head in response. Rosemary smiled, and reached up to kiss him on the lips. Rosemary lay back down against Logans chest, and bit her lip.
"Logan?" she asked.
"Yes, Ro," he replied.
Rosemary giggled at the nickname before sitting up. "I want to do it. I don't want tot die a virgin," she said.
Logan grinned, and grabbed Rosemary, pulling he back down on top of him. "Okay angel. One night together, before we die. Ley's have some fun," he said.
Rosemary ran into the Bloodbath to grab supplies like she had agreed with Logan. Robin saw her, and beheaded her with his sword.
Logan Kennedy lay in bed, holding Rosemary against his chest. She was fast asleep, having fallen asleep after they had a shower together. He was shocked that Rosemary had found him attractive, as he thought she had been way out of his league, and even if she had wanted to be with him, they were in the Games so he did not think she would want to do anything. However, he was wrong, and he had just had the best evening of his life, spending it with the most beautiful person he had ever seen. He was scared to enter the Arena, but made a promise to himself that he would die to protect Rosemary, and help her win. If she could get back and live her life, then he would die happy. Logan closed his eyes, and tried to get some sleep. He found it hard to sleep though, as kept on having nightmares about the final two being him and Rosemary. If it got to that, he knew that they would have to fight, as the last Victor who won because the other tribute committed suicide was Jack from Seven, and the family of the person who placed second was publicly executed for their son 'defying the Capitol'. He did not want his family to die, and he also didn't want to fight Rosemary, so hoped that they would not be the final two.
Logan saw Rosemary die, and sprinted towards Robin to kill him. He crashed into Filet one the way and she quickly stabbed Logan, thinking she was being attacked.
Lee Nikolpisa cried into Seeders' shoulder, holding her head in pain. She had ate something that she was allergic to, and her body hurt. She was dizzy, queasy and her head was throbbing. It hurt her a lot, and she had never felt pain like this before. She was only twelve, and this was the first time she had ever had an allergic reaction. Before this, she did not think she was allergic to anything and, as Seeders' daughter, had eaten a lot of food compared to most people in her District. Seeder gently stroked her hair, comforting her.
"Do you want some water darling?" Seeder asker.
Lee nodded, sniffling.
"I'll be back in a minute okay. Love you." Seeder said.
"Love you mummy," replied Lee quietly.
Seeder left her room, shutting the door gently. Only after leaving Lees' room did she allow herself to cry. She was going to lose her eldest. The pain she felt was nothing like she had felt before, and she knew she would feel more pain when Lee was killed. Seeder was under no illusion that Lee would be allowed to survive. Lee and Cormac were in the Arena as punishment for the failed rebellion in Eleven recently. Seeder knew this. All she could hope was that Lee would die quickly.
Lee managed to run through her pain to the mountain, and lie low there. When the lava came, she tripped Filet into the lava by accident, and it caused her to fall as well, quickly being burned to a crisp.
District Twelve
Rain Delano was rewatching his interview with Caeser Flickerman. He was explaining about his life in Twelve, and why he refused his stylist trying to cover the scars on his forehead. He had received those scar from his father beating him with a stick for disobeying him. Rain had beat routinely beaten by his father, as he blamed Rain for his wife's death. She had died giving birth to Rain, so his father had been beating him for anything and everything since his birth. Rain had none nothing but pain his entire life, and had been made into an aggressive person because of it. In his interview, he talked about all of this, and said that if he became the Victor, he would kill his father, slowly, to make him feel some of the pain Rain had felt his entire life. This had shocked the audience, but after Rain detailed all the abuse he had suffered at his fathers hands, they came over to his side. He was confident that, even if eh died in the Arena, his father would be killed or turned into an avox so he could never hurt anyone else again.
Rain found sword in the Bloodbath, and battled Robin. He fought the Career, but was eventually disarmed, and became the last death in the Bloodbath.
Ette Scales threw up over the railing of the balcony. Ever since she arrived in the Capitol, she had been told by her escort that she had a lot of sponsors. This confused her, and she asked who they were. At the interview, the escort pointed out her sponsors and Ette saw they were all grown men, most of whom were overweight and not attractive at all. They leered at her when she was on stage. After her interview, she cornered Coalette on the balcony, and demanded to know why they were so interested in her. Coalette sat down next to her, and told her the truth about the Victor Prostitution Circle, and that if she won, she would be forced to sleep with anyone from the Capitol who wanted to. She, like all female Victors apart from Syren, would be forced to sleep with Enobarbus and President Snow for at minimum a year, and only if she had a relationship. If she was single, she would be forced to continue sleeping with anyone who wanted her until a year after she got into a relationship. Ette was disgusted by this news, and made a plan to avoid having this happen to her.
Ette refused to be a toy for rich perverts, so ran straight into the Bloodbath and at Aqua. Aqua saw Ette, and speared her through the stomach.
Maysilee Donner lay on her bed looking up at the ceiling. She was scared beyond belief. In the last sixteen years, five other Donners had entered the Games. The Capitol seemed to have it out for her family. Her aunt had died in the Thiry-Ninth. Her sister in the Forty-First. Her brother in the Forty-Third. Her cousin in the Forty-Fifth and her other sister in the Forty-Seventh. Maysilee was now here in the Fiftieth. She really hoped that whatever they had out for her family would be over after this year. She had asked Haymitch for an alliance, but he had refused, saying that going solo was a better idea, and that he did not want to ally with her, as he already was her friends in Twelve, and did not want to have to kill her. Maysilee understood his point, however, she chose to follow Haymitch, as she did not want to be alone, and at least be near to someone that she knew and cared about. If they were the final two, they could cross that bridge when they came to it.
Maysilee allied with Haymitch, before splitting in the final five. Right after this, bird mutts bit at her throat, and she chocked on her blood, devastating Haymitch.
Haymitch Abernathy was sitting on the roof, staring out over the Capitol, holding some hot chocolate in his hand. After adjusting his position, he wince and put a hand to his stomach. Even with all the Capitol technology, it still hurt. He heard the door open, but refused to turn around. After a few minutes, he felt someone sit down either side of him. When he looked up, he saw it was Mags and Coalette.
"Hey Haymitch. How are you doing?" asked Coalette.
Haymitch took a gulp of his drink. "How do you think?" he muttered. "How are the other Victors. The ones who lost family in the Arena?"
"The Ones have not shown much reaction. Brutus is sad, but saying his sister died for the honour. Gates is not in the mood to talk. Dylan has started drinking heavily. Sycamore has been in the gym almost all the time since Holly died, punching her feelings away. Spool is high. Steer is angry, but not at you. Pasture has locked herself in her room, crying Steer thinks. Orchid is looking after Chaff, who has started drinking as well. Seeder is also in the gym, slashing dummies apart with her sickle," replied Mags.
"Mags!" hissed Coalette. "Not now."
"He asked," said Mags bluntly. "He wanted to know so I told him. I will be honest with him, like I am all of you."
Haymitch chuckled softly. "I think I am going to like you Mags,"
"I already like you Haymitch. You played the Games well, and the way you won wasn't bad either," she said, smiling.
Haymitch thanked them both, before heading back down to ger some sleep. After he left, Mags and Coalette looked at each other.
"What do you think is going to happen? They won't allow him to get away with this unpunished," asked Mags
"No clue. Whatever happens, I promise I will be there for him. However," said Coalette. "I have only told my family this. I have cancer. I have been given two years to live. I will need you to be there for Haymitch after I die."
"Oh Coalette no! Can you not get it treated?" asked Mags, giving Coalette a hug.
"No. It is to aggressive unfortunately. Best they can do is give me pills to try and slow it down," replied Coalette.
Mags held Coalette close. "I promise you; I will look after him. I will make sure everyone does," she whispered. Coalette nodded, hoping against hope that Haymitch would be okay.
Haymitch returned to District Twelve to find his family and friends all dead. He turned to alcohol quickly after Coalette died, and never quite recovered. He mentored alone for thirty three years, watching sixty-five tributes die, before finally getting a Victor in the Eighty-Third Games.
