Chapter 1
It was dark outside. All she could hear was the rushing of running water, she knew the source as she had passed a gushing stream on her way through the dense wood. She knew she had to stay hidden for a few more moments or they would find her. As she closed her eyes to focus her heightened senses on her pursuers' whereabouts. In her hands clutched like a vice was a book, in the moonlight the pages had a faint glow to them, she knew she had to keep going but now was to dangerous. She had been looking for this for a decade, following every leads, every whisper, any hint on this particular book. Caroline had gone to Freya after exhausting every possibility. She knew the original witch would think her mad for this idea, that after what they had agreed to do for Hope for her to find peace would be for nothing. But to her surprise the blonde witch was more than happy to help. If it meant making things right then she was all in to.
"Quick, she must have run to the west" a male voice reached her ears pulling her out of her thoughts. a rush of many footfalls followed, "We have to find her, she has that bloody book. I don't care what you do with her, just get me that book. We must keep it hidden" a man yelled echoing through the trees to the burrow Caroline had squeezed herself into when she had made her desperate escape. As the sound of her pursuers fading into the darkness she was once again plunged into the silence of nature. Caroline let out a deep breath she didn't know she had been holding all this time. She finally looked down at her wanted prize that still surprisingly was intact even in her strong grip. "That's what you get with an ancient spell book Caroline" she thought to herself. "I wonder why you are being guarded so much. this better work" she spoke quietly to herself.
When she thought the coast was clear of danger she moved out of her hiding spot and back onto the beaten path. Caroline was unfamiliar with this country, Romania wasn't a place she had visited in her many years or thought she would be visiting but needs must when you put your mind to something. As Caroline dusted off the dried leaves and dirt from her very inappropriate exploring outfit. Searching through a ancient burial site of a witch in a sparkly silver corset dress wasn't what she had for this evening but when Freya had message her a new lead Caroline knew she couldn't wait for the morning to find out if this was another dead end or finally what they had been looking for. 'Rebekah will be pissed that I have ruined her dress' Caroline thought as she continued through the forest. The blonde original vampire had helped her pack for the trip. Once Freya had agreed to be onboard with her plan Caroline had left the school in Alaric's capable hands and set off to a large farm house just outside New Orleans. Rebekah was there on Caroline's arrival to her surprise. The blonde had just hugged her and told her she was in as well.
So this is why Caroline was in a foreign country and after a simple text message she had ran out on her dinner plans and shoved on at least sturdy boots before getting into her car and floored it to the pin marker Freya had sent her.
Luck was on their side tonight because in her hands was definitely not a dead end, it was in fact exactly what they had been looking for. It was their hope.
As Caroline looked around to double check if the forest was empty of any threats she put the valuable book into her bag, her brow frowned "Where the hell did I park my car?", she voiced out loud as she glanced around forgetting where exactly she had hidden her vehicle. Caroline had quickly noticed when a black SUV car had been following her, so she sped to her destination and quickly slipped her car behind a verge of bushes and fallen trees. As she exited the car all she could think about was getting to where Freya had told her to go, so she ran and ran until she found it. A small shack ruin, It was decayed with time, "Now the fun part" Caroline had thought as she found the exact spot Freya had said the old witch would be buried and with her well manicured nails Caroline started to dig with her bare hands until she felt it. and felt it she did, a skeleton hand encasing an ancient time. Caroline didn't have time to examine her discovery to carefully or be polite about the deceased before she broke apart the bones and stole the time, he hearing picked up on her chasers and she fled to safety, or well a small burrow not too far away.
Caroline got out her phone and rang the top number, as the dial tone sounded she started to run in the direction she had hoped the small town she was staying in was. The wind blew past her so fast as she sped through the trees, wanting nothing more than to get to her hotel room and grab her things so she could get on a plane back to them. Luckily it was a very small town and to Caroline's luck no people were actually on the night streets so her journey back to her room was uninterrupted. As she closed the painted chipped door behind her she kept hearing the noise of the dial tone, "Come on pick up, pick up" she muttered as she rushed around her room packing up what little belongings she had brought with her, as well as the clothes Rebekah had let her borrow. Caroline was a pro now at traveling light and moving on, which still surprises her as she knew her younger self would never have gone anywhere without at least 3 suitcases worth of stuff.
As Caroline shoved all what she had brought with her into an overnight bag, she reached for her handbag and pulled out what she had dug up. Just noticing that her hands and nails still had dirt on them. "Oh what would Rebekah think" Caroline thought and let out a small chuckle. She couldn't believe she had found it, or well that they had found it. A small tear escaped her eye, she never allowed herself too much hope but that is exactly what she had in her hands' hope. She let her fingers dance over the cover of the book. It was old, very old. She couldn't make out what it was actually made out of, not paper or any type of parchment she could tell. It had a sense of darkness about it, an allure drawing her in but also warning her to not get too close.
As she stare at the symbol on the front she was brought out of her daze by her name being screamed. "CAROLINE" a voice shouted, Caroline whipped her gaze from the book and onto the source of the disturbance. It was her phone, "Oh shit" Caroline muttered before gently placing the book into her black overnight bag and zipping it up. "Hello i'm here, sorry i'm just getting my things and heading to the airport now" she replied, grabbing her phone which she had placed on the nightstand. "Thank god, we all thought something had happened" a familiar voice rang through the phone, "Who do you mean we All Freya" Caroline asked as she grabbed all her belongings and quickly glanced into the mirror on her way out. "God you are in a state Caroline" she thought as she slammed the door wanting to get out of this country and back home as soon as possible.
"Well . . . . . "Freya answewred, "Well who Freya?" Caroline demanded. "It's me and Freya here as well and . . . " Rebekah's voice carried through the phone. Caroline closed her eyes and stopped at the curb letting out a deep sign, "and who else ?" Caroline demanded. They promised each other that they would keep this small, that there was no point in telling everyone before they had anything concrete. And for the last 3 years of them searching they had nothing until now. "Don't be mad at Freya or Bekah, but I flew in last night and to be honest I was the one who gave Freya this information" the familiar voice of Davina rang out of the phone, "you know I should know as well Caroline. For Kol's sake" she added. "I know D" Caroline replied getting into a taxi, "It's just you know I don't want you all getting your hopes up like last time and the time before that. I didn't want to let you down again or make you go through that". "I know but we are his family Caroline. We deserve to know and we want to be involved in this. Why wouldn't we be" Rebekah softly said. "I know" Caroline breathed out. Caroline had become close with the Mikaelson sisters and kol's wife over the last couple of years. Davina had help with certain witch contacts. "So I am assuming Kol is there to" Caroline asked running her hand through her hair before realising she still had dirty hands. "Uhh" she thought. Shaking the invisible dirty out of her locks.
"Ummm actually no, he doesn't know I am here" Davina confessed on the other line. "We can discuss everything when you get here Care, just be safe" Freya cut in before Caroline could question the young witch further. It hit her weird because she knew Davina never hid anything from Kol and she never went anywhere to far from him either.
As she rested her head against the leather headrest of the taxi as it drove down the cobble road to her awaiting private plane. Perks of living forever and knowing others that have lived longer. "Now you listen her girly, you get your butt on that plane and get here asap safe and sound so Freya and Davina can look at this book, we will worry about it being all for nothing if or when that time comes, Ok" Rebeakah commanded. Even being in another country Caroline could just imagine the original with her hand on her hips.
"Yes, I will" Caroline answered with a faint smile on her face, "See you soon" she ended the call.
The light of the street lights danced across her ageless face, as her taxi pulled up onto the black tarmac of her runway.
She got out of the car and compelled the driver to go home safely and forget he ever saw her. As she sat in the plane seat and the roar of the plane's engine starting up filled her ears she looked over to her bag on the seat next to her. She placed a protective hand over it, long ago memories filled her head. Moments she had had with a man that had vowed something to her that couldn't be fulfilled. A last love promise, he had sacrificed himself for his daughter. Oh how she hated him and loved him at the same time, there was a time she had thought him pure evil but she had been young back then. Influenced by other peoples' views on him, don't get it wrong he could be a complete ass sometimes but he wasn't without feelings especially to her. But his death was something that didn't sit right with Caroline, that Hope had to grow up with 2 parents gone from her life.
Her girls had all grown up now, living their own lives. Lizzie's a bit more different then Josie's but they were off on their own adventures. Caroline tried to be there as much as possible for Hope but knew deep down losing Haley and Klaus is a hole she could never fill. That is why she had spent years and years on her travels around the world searching for something she didn't know herself might be possible, disguising her search in the guise of looking for new recruitment/students for her school.
She was grateful that all of this had gone unnoticed by the young Mikaelson, she was currently traveling around the world with one of her daughters Lizzie. Those two have become as close as sisters. Josie kept to herself and Caroline respected that. She had grow distant and wanted a feel of a normal life and as her mother she would damn right make sure her daughter got it. So she checks in on her now and then but josie is happy with how it is.
Lizzie and Hope on the other hand were as bad as each other. A hybrid witch/vampire and a tribrid vampire/werewolf/witch could get up to whatever they wanted. But Caroline was glad that they were friends. That they had each other.
The only regret was what they had made Hope believe, even if it was coming from a good place. To help her move on. 'How selfish they had been'. Caroline still cringes on the spell Freya and Davina had cast on Hope to believe she had witnessed her Dad finally at peace.
"This better work" Caroline thought while gripping the bag, she would ask for Hope's forgiveness late. Buzz Buzz!
Caroline looked down at her phone on her lap, it was a message from Freya. 'Get home safe and let's get started to bring my brother back from the dead. Fingers crossed it works this time' Caroline crossed her own fingers. "Please let this be it"
