Lucky Escape
This is one of my first fanfics I've written... ever! I wrote this sometime last year for a school assignment on the novel Artemis Fowl, which we were studying for English. So read and tell me what you thought! - Keikolilo
NOTE: This scene can be found on page 139 of Artemis Fowl. It is told from the viewpoint of Corporal Grub Kelp.
Disclaimer: I do NOT own any of the Artemis Fowl characters, but only wish I did… The dialogue below was taken from the first AF book and belongs to Eoin Colfer, but the rest of the text is my work. (Thanks crystalocean for that!)
I looked up, in time to see the last of my comrades drop sluggishly to the ground. He was groaning. Shocked and unconscious, perhaps.
The massive Mud Man, who made mincemeat of LEPretrieval One, was hovering over me. He knew I was still conscious. I tightened my eyelids, praying that he wouldn't notice my tiny knees knocking together like unstable bowling pins…
I felt something close in around my neck as I was lifted off the ground with surprising ease.
'Name?' It was a deep and loud voice. Sounded like a trumpet.
I forced my eyes a millimetre open. It was that Mud Gorilla again! It was his fingers around my throat. What a grand way to die! Where's my brother? He was supposed to save me! I'm telling Mummy!
'Uh, uh… G-Grub… er, I mean Corporal Kelp.' I said, straightening my back in mid-air. My voice sounded like a mouse next to the Mud Man's.
The Mud Man held me closer to his face. Phew! He could use some mouth-freshener. 'Well, Corporal, tell your commander that the next time I see armed forces coming in here, they'll be picked off by snipers. Armed with armour-piecing bullets.' He glared at me with menacing eyes to make his point. It looked like two black dots.
I nodded furiously, my head wobbling worse than a runaway yo-yo. 'Yessir,' I agreed. 'Sniper fire. Got it. Seems fair.'
The man mountain grunted. He sounded like an elephant coughing. 'Good. You are, however, permitted to remove your injured.'
'Most generous of you.' I said, plastering on an artificial smile a toddler could see through.
The sausage-like fingers tightened around my neck. 'But if I see so much as the twinkle of a weapon on any of the medics, I might be tempted to detonate a few of the mines I have planted in the grounds.'
I nodded. Not quite enough air to talk. From the Mud Man's darkened glasses, I could see my face being reflected. It had turned a ghastly white. 'Uh-huh sir. Unarmed medics. Crystal clear.' I croaked.
I felt myself being lowered.
'Now make a neat, civil pile of all weaponry.'
I shrank like a mouse in a corner. 'I-I can't. LEP officers must never relinquish his weapon.' I rushed in one breath.
To my surprise, the Mud Gorilla nodded calmly. 'Fair enough. Off you go then.'
I skipped back towards the command tower, relieved. No broken bones or bruises. The last fairy standing! Wait until Mummy hears this!
