Underground Adventure

This is another AF fanfic I've written for a school assignment in Year 7, at around the same time as Lucky Escape. I received pretty pleasing marks for the both of them, so it'll be interesting to see what others think of it. - Keikolilo

DISCLAIMER: Of course Holly Short and Mulch Diggums do not belong to me… they belong to Eoin Colfer… blah blah blah… well, you know the drill.

'Come on!' shouted the elf. She wasn't what you would imagine a fairy would look like, with flowing blonde locks. This particular fairy had cropped auburn hair and was wearing a green jumpsuit that proudly announced the LEP's acorn insignia. However, she did have pointed elfin ears.

I followed the elf down the shaded passage full of city fairies half my size. Compared to them, I must be the size of a troll's offspring; a regular giant. A goblin fainted, probably of the polluted stench I brought down the chutes to the underground fairy world. Fairy lungs weren't used to contaminated mud air.

We stopped sprinting at the next corner. The elf inspected the next lane before proceeding. These fairies were certainly cautious. But why?

I tapped the elf on the shoulder. 'If you would be so kind, can you tell me why I'm here, Captain? It wouldn't have anything involving my cousin in Ireland?'

The elf slowly lowered the hand-held Neutrino 2000 that had been dangling from her finger. 'What cousin?' she said frostily. 'Oh, it's Artemis Fowl, isn't it?'

I nodded indulgently.

'I knew I recognised your blue eyes from somewhere,' said Holly, frowning slightly. She sighed. 'Well… let's just say there wasn't a lot of fun where he and I were concerned.'

'Oh.'

'The LEP - that's us - were wondering if you could help us with a case. High IQ seems to be running strong in the Fowls. We weren't keen on crossing paths with Artemis again, so that's why we sent you down the chutes.'

I shrugged. 'Okay.'

The diminutive, yet demanding, LEP captain produced a photograph of a dubious individual from a concealed pocket. 'We are looking for him.' Holly said, a tapered finger jabbing. 'Public nuisance number one: Mulch Diggums.'

'And he is a…?'

'Dwarf. Criminal. There's so many words to describe him, not one of them good. Root's been hunting him since he stole a couple of gold bars from my kidnapping ransom fund last December.'

I snorted. 'What makes you think he's going to be dancing in the middle of the street with his prize? Criminals tend to be more secretive, you know.'

Holly shrugged. 'Well, we have no leads. After all, he's our only suspect, dead or alive. Everyone's on grunt work like this, until we locate him.' She slipped the mugshot into its respective pocket.

That was the beginning of the day's adventure. I skipped off after the elf before she disappeared around the corner.
