Ode to the Tragedy of Love
By Joan Marie Mesi
Inspired by Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
His gaze could pierce the hardest of heart with its warmth
Her beauty, even so young, astounded all she met
Her family boisterous and proud
His, quiet and dignified
Doomed to die
But fated to bring peace
Only through deepest tragedy
Could hope of harmony make
Whispered vows of everlasting love
Forbidden visits by night
Stolen kisses by moonlight
A clandestine marriage
A condemned match
Of two ill-starred lovers
In the words of the Bard
O brawling love
O loving hate
Lives lost not in vain
For only in death was peace attained
Lovers together in eternity
Romeo
Juliet
