Chapter Five
Just like the previous day, Hermione set the pace. She wanted to feel free again. Trusting that her Professor would keep up with her she gained speed once more, her wild hair flying, she tilted her head up catching the sun. After being captive in the dark for so long her skin was pale, not yet transparent though. She smiled as she slowed her broom to better enjoy the light. Inhaling the crisp air, so clean at this height far above the city pollution.
She glanced at her potions teacher, admittedly her favorite teacher. Yes, he insulted her and ignored her hand in the air, but that only drove her to do better and try harder. Thats what made him her favorite, because he didn't coddle her. Her other teachers praised her for every little thing and over look what she did wrong, but not the potions master. Professor Severus Snape found the one thing she did or said wrong and pulled it apart forcing her to think about it harder and remember it for next time. Hermione found him doing much the same as her, more subdued of course.
Snape caught her looking at him and glared, she didn't even flinch. Hermione held his stare for a moment then smiled and slowly took her hands off her broom, keeping balanced as she spread them wide tilting her head to the sun. She felt like leaf spreading out and turning up to the sun for energy and she did feel energized.
BIT OF SNAPE POV
Snape just glared at her lunacy, but still keeping a careful eye on her safety the old coot Dumbledore would never let him off the hook if she got girl was the brains of the golden trio of course. Not that he would let something happen to her was willing to bet that she is the only reason why the two boys were even alive at this point. He took the safety of his students very seriously. Snape did his very best to instill in them safety in potions and to steer his snakes in the right direction.
"Miss Granger, return your hands to your broom at once." He ordered as he saw her waver slightly. He noticed she was thinner than last year with the wind blowing her robes against her. In fact he had noticed a few things different from the last time he saw her. The girl carried her self differently, not like a girl but a women, more mature. Her hair while still bushy looked much thinner, her eyes duller, and he skin looked sallow. The girl reluctantly obeyed keeping to their more languid pace.
When the Headmaster told him that he was to escort Miss Granger he had to admit to himself he was a little relieved, at least she was smart and respectful. It was suppose to be a short trip. just from The Burrow to the dogs house then he would be free to go back to the school and finish lesson plans before the students arrived the next evening. Running into the death eaters and the granger girl falling asleep on him forced him to make the decision to go to a safe house first just to be sure the coast was clear. As a rule when in the safe house there was to be no outside communication least it be traced back to either party. At their current speed they would only get minutes before she would depart for the train on broom with someone else and he would floo to the school. Without a full meal.
Snape may not like Molly Weasley but he did like her food, It was always packed with nutrients but not as advanced as the house elves did at the school. he decided he wanted a good meal, so with a nod to himself he increased his speed. He knew that she would follow suit, she had been matching his movement and direction changes the whole trip.
END SNAPE POV
Hermione was disappointed that he told her to put her hands back on her broom, she was only trying to enjoy herself. Her disappointment faded when she noticed him slowly accelerating. With a smile she did too, then pulled in front of him, he matched her. It when on like that for the rest of the flight. Hermione would pull ahead of him by dipping her body closer to her broom. The professor would do the same, silently racing, seeing who was faster. She couldn't help but smile when she glanced at him, his face as stoic as ever but she saw in his eyes that he was enjoying the competition. So the surly Professor can have fun.
Upon arrival at Grimmauld Place Hermione was swamped with hugs from Ron and Harry. She laughed and hug them back, laughing as they asked her question after question a mile a minute. "Guys, calm down you saw me just yesterday. What has you so concerned?" she asked them when they finally pulled away. Snape brushed past them to the kitchen to recount the events to the rest of the order present. The boys dragged her to the couch, sitting her between them.
"You were suppose to be here yesterday, what happened?" Harry asked as he grabbed her hand to hold it reassuring himself that she was really here. She smiled at him fondly, covering his hand with hers.
"We came across some death eaters, they didn't see us but we came rather close, then we stopped at a safe house for the night. took off again first thing this morning. You know guys, i think i rather enjoy flying." She smiled looking at each of them noting the relief and confusion on Rons face and the concern on Harry's. Hermione patted his hand softly.
" You... like flying?" Ron questioned looking like he didn't believe it. Hermione just nodded about to answer untile her stomach let out a mighty growl. She frowned causing harry to laugh.
"Come on Moine lets get you some food." Harry said as he pulled her up from the couch, which he noticed was much to easy. He led the way to the kitchen, Hermione hand still in his own with Ron bringing up the rear.
