Title: Anniversary

By: LilMizPiper

Summary: It's Kitty's anniversary and Kurt goes to speak to her . . . why isn't she talking? Kurtty. Lame summary, I know. Lol. Kitty/Kurt Angst. One-shot.

Disclaimer: I don't own X-Men. If I did, then Kitty would have ended up with Kurt, NOT Lance. Sheesh! *mutters angrily*

Author's Note: I got the idea for this from a story I read a few years ago.

Kurt walked silently across the grass. He'd been coming to the same spot every year on this day for the past 3 years. He knew the path well and it did nothing to ease his guilt.

"Katzchen?" Kurt began but stopped to wipe the tears out of his eyes, the sight before him making him feel physically ill. He tried again.

"It's me, Katzchen. The fuzzy dude." Kurt smiled shakily and waited for a response. Nothing.

"Happy Valentine's Day, liebes. I brought you these" Kurt said, holding up the flowers. "They're your favourite, right?" Kitty didn't answer him but Kurt knew she was grateful. He always knew what his best beloved was thinking.

"So . . . here we are again. I'm sorry I haven't come to see you for a while. Things have been so hectic back at the Institute. You should see how many students are there now, schatz, it's a mad house! I've never seen Logan so stressed . . ." Kurt laughed. Kitty didn't smile.

"Scott finally proposed to Jean. I'm sorry you couldn't be there. Jean wanted you to be. We all did." Kurt said sadly, looking down at his feet. He looked up suddenly with a mixture of desperation and determination on his face. "Please talk to me, Katzchen! Please? I need to hear your voice . . . please let me hear your voice . . ."

Kitty didn't say a word. Kurt waited a moment before sighing and continuing on.

"It's not going to happen, is it? You're not gonna talk to me. Not now, not tomorrow, not – not next week or next year . . . it's not going to happen. And it's my fault."

Kurt looked down. Tears welled in his eyes, blurring his vision. "I'm so sorry this happened to you, Katzchen. I never should have left you . . ." he cried, "I should have been there to protect you, I'm so sorry . . ."

He wept for a few moments before taking a deep breath, attempting to calm down. He dried his eyes and continued on.

"The – the Professor keeps telling me not to blame myself, that there was nothing that I could do. But I can't believe that. If I had just stayed with you . . . I should have protected you. I'm so sorry, schatz. It's my fault this happened. I hope that you can forgive me."

Kurt looked down at his watch.

"I have to go, schatz. I promised Logan I'd help him train the new students today." He said, looking towards the mansion.

"Ich liebe dich, Katzchen. Happy Valentine's Day . . . I'll see you next time" Kurt whispered, 'porting away and leaving a blue cloud of sulphur in his wake.

After a moment, the cloud dispersed to reveal what Kurt came to see every Valentine's Day.

Taken before her time.

Well, what do you think? I know it's not great . . . but it's my first one-shot so be nice! And it's finished so frankly I don't care how bad it is, lol. To be honest, I think it's pretty horrible. What I was trying to get across was that on Valentine's Day, 3 years ago, Kitty was killed and Kurt blames himself for not being there to protect her. But it wasn't his fault.
