Azure Chalices

Maya looked upon a desolate world full of pain and reckonings, her pale arms folded upon her slender frame, darkish hair highlighting the setting sun behind her. Upon which, she sighed longingly and in relief. It was a cold world out there, and the unspeakable days had got even colder with the coming moons. Ever since the era of the Third Impact had dawned upon this untouchable world of night and blinding light, Angels had highlighted upon this Earth. These resembled no other life-form known to man and were considered a huge threat, monstrous and yet subtle. Alien and yet unique, ironic that at least 99.5% of the DNA was based upon human's very own genetic blueprints. They struck Antartica, but soon spread throughout the entire world, streaking and appearing out of nowhere. It seemed like the worst had already passed. Then they had found the Katsuragi exhibition team, embedded in ice, a scream still apparent on their silent faces as they uncovered the 'beast' that originated their sufferings: Adam, the first 'angel'. NERV of course didn't reckon it then that the Angels would strike back. And when those monstrous beings did, it was with the furies of a thousand wraths, maddening and illogical to those mortals. As Maya remembered, she cut her pale finger on a yellowed page of the book. After a long pause, the NERV computer specialist started sucking upon it, the taste bittersweet upon her lips. A cold and yet odd smile was chiseled upon the face of the young lady. She chuckled, a timbre of her voice dark and sweetly mocking as she remembered...

The coldness. The scent of warmth and the beating flesh. Well, Gendo thought that Angels were the worst they had to deal with... He was wrong as usual, Angels weren't the only things they had to worry about. At least until the outbreak had passed, the plague of mankind that arose just when they thought things were done with... Those beastly creatures immortalised only in mythology and legends at least. Until those people realized the worst outcome, they only suppressed the defects not eliminated them at all... Those beings known only as children of Norsefatu, blood-kin. Anarchic and revealed to be a scientific oddities, those beings existed by stealing the life source of others... Pale blue flashes as the humanoids reappeared.

Those beings known only... To those others who acknowledged their existence. And yet NERV had the illogical courage to create them, one after the other. These were considered created by the humans accidentally. Maya remembered the scrape of rounded incisors against her skin, the rasp of breath and those fearsome eyes of those who she once considered friends. Slightly touching the pinpricks that wound around her neck, she shuddered. It was the Clone who became the hunter, the clone only known as Rei... The one who was both enemy and 'friend'...
