I came across this scene from "Family of Blood" on youtube and it inspired me to write this scene. Enjoy.
A Whisper in Time
"What are you going to do?" Her voice was quiet. John Smith looked at her and then back at the watch lying in his palm. It seemed so normal, so cold.
"All you have to do is open it and he's back."
Martha's words echoed through his mind. All he had to do was open it and the Doctor was back and John Smith would die. He didn't want to die. He didn't want to become the Doctor.
"He's like fire and ice and rage. He's like the night and the storm at the heart of the sun. He is ancient and forever. He burns at the center of time and he can see the turn of the universe. And . . . he's wonderful."
Timothy was in awe of the Doctor. He himself had sensed the power, the wisdom, the strength. He took a shuddering breath.
"People are dying out there! They need him and I need him cause you've got no idea what he's like! I've only just met him and it wasn't even that long ago, but . . . he is everything. He is just everything to me and he doesn't even look at me, but I don't care . . . cause I love him to bits."
Martha loved him, this Doctor. But Joan . . . she loved John Smith. And he loved her. With a flash of pain, he remembered the scenes shown to him by the watch, the future he could have. The wedding, holding his little son, walking with his wife and two children, dying in his bed . . .
"He won't love you."
"If he's not you than I don't want him too. . . . The Time Lord has such adventures . . . but he could never live a life like that."
"And yet I could."
"What are going to do?"
What was he going to do? In the end, he realized that he really had no choice. Tears rolling down his cheeks, he looked up at Joan.
"I love you," he whispered and kissed her. "I love you so much."
"I know," she answered. He stood up and stepped to the middle of the room. Taking a deep breath, he opened the watch. For an instant, he was both the Doctor and John Smith, Time Lord and human, savior of the universe and humble teacher.
The watch snapped shut, empty and obsolete.
The Doctor opened his eyes, looking up to stare at Joan Redfern, still standing with tears running down her cheeks.
John Smith faded away and became nothing more than a whisper in time.
The End
