Promise

She locked the door and turned around. Her back leaned on the door. She closed her eyes, because it hurt so much to see. Yet, that didn't stop her from seeing their life together. Tears trickled down her cheeks, her legs trembled. She slid down to the floor and cried for the loss of her loved one... the first true love in her life. Laying her head on her knees, she wrapped her arms around her long legs. Her cries turned to sobs and eventually she fell asleep.

She lost track of time, unsure of how long she had been sitting on the floor. Her body ached for being in one position for some time. She rose and walked toward the kitchen. Reaching for a glass, she filled it with water. Opening the freezer for ice, a container of chocolate ice cream stared at her. It was the last item he had bought before her life crumbled to bits and pieces.

Her legs weakened, she stumbled backwards, falling into a chair. She placed her glass onto the kitchen table and faced the open freezer. Her full focus had been on the container of ice cream that she was unaware of the young man who had just walked in.

"Mom, are you alright?" he asked.

Silence filled the air.

"Mom? Mom!" He gently shook her shoulders, only then did she realize it was her son.

"Mark, what are you doing here?"

"What am I doing here? What are you doing, sitting in front of an open freezer?"

"I...I was going to get some ice when I found the..."

Mark followed his mother's gaze. "It reminds you of Dad, doesn't it?"

"Yes," the woman replied. "He promised that if I beat him at monopoly, I could have an extra scoop of ice cream. Chocolate was his favorite. He promised...," she paused. Her voice turned into a whisper. "He promised he would never leave me again. He promised I would never be alone again." Turning to her son, her eyes glistened with tears. "He promised. Promises were meant to be broken."

Mark wrapped his arms around his mother. They both cried for the man they loved. It was the first time he had cried for his father.

"You're wrong, Mom. You're not alone. You have me. I won't leave you. You also have Katy and Sydney. They'll be here any moment. Dad didn't leave you alone. He left you with us. He made sure there was an "us" before he left. We love you and need you, Mom."

She wiped the tears from his cheek and hugged him. "I love you too."

A/N: Usually angst is not my style, but I wrote this not long after I heard the terrible news of Ritz-Carlton & JW Marriott bombings in Jakarta. Indonesian people & government & the rest of the world condemn the attack. The event left me thinking about the victims' families left behind. I'm not implying that Jarod died because of a bomb.

To AJeff, thank you for your beta. I sincerely wish you good luck :)
