Birthday Surprise

Jack was in the kitchen cooking. That was a rare occurrence, unless they were grilling out. Today was a special occasion though, today was Sam's birthday.

Jack had been up for almost two hours. He had fixed every breakfast item he could find. Grace had been up for about forty-five minutes and helped when she could.

"Grace," Jack said, "why don't you go wake mommy up. Tell her to come down to the kitchen."

"Ok" she replied and ran up the stairs to her mom's bedroom.

Grace gently pushed open the bedroom door and quietly walked over to Sam's side of the bed. Then she got on the bed and softly shook Sam until she woke up.

"Mmm" Sam said not fully awake up.

"Mommy get up."

Sleepily Sam opened her eyes, rolled over and said "Grace what are you doing?"

"Waking you up silly." Grace said with a smile.

"OK, why?" Sam asked.

"I can't tell you. Just come down to the kitchen when your ready." With that she got off the bed and ran back downstairs.

Sam knew something was up. So she got out of bed, put on her robe and made her way downstairs.

As Sam made her way down the stairs she could smell something delicious. She didn't know what is was but she knew it smelt good.

When she got to the entrance of the kitchen she was amazed at what she saw. Breakfast. The table was full of breakfast food, that Jack had cooked.

He could fix a mean barbeque and he was good with stuff on the grill but when it came to actually cooking something in a kitchen, he wasn't the greatest cook.

For the most part when he cooked something he burnt it, but all the food on the table looked edible.

Jack could see the look on her face and knew exactly what she was thinking 'I can't believe he cooked all this without burning it'. That put a small smile on his face.

"Surprise." he said an smile one of his childlike smiles.

"Happy Birthday mommy." Grace said as she ran to give Sam a hug.

"Our birthday present to you this morning." Jack said as he walked over to her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Happy Birthday Sam."

Sam didn't know what to say. It was just a small gesture but it meant so much to her. "Thank you. I love it and I really appreciate all the hard work."

"Your welcome mommy," Grace paused, "can we eat now mommy? Please?"

Sam couldn't help but smile. "Yes sweetie we can eat now."

"Yay."

"Thanks Jack.'

"For what?" he asked with a smile on his face.

"For making me feel special once again." Sam said.

"Anytime." He said and leaned over and gave her another kiss, this time on the lips. "Now lets eat, shall we."

"We shall." Sam said with a smile.
