He sighed, putting his head in his hands. Shawn shivered, pulling the small towel around him. This wasn't supposed to happen, she should have never had to say that. He put her life in danger every time he caught another psychopath, it would have never ended. He looked over at Abigail as she was questioned, she was anxious to go home. Her arms were pulled tight around her, it was clear that she just wanted to go home and sleep off the events of that day.
There was something in him, a pain that just seemed to grow as he thought about it. He could have caught that bastard, jumped over the railing and pummeled him, but he had to find Abigail. He had let him run away, let the sicko get away to plot another scheme. He didn't even know how to find him. Who would he go after next?
As long as Mr. Yin was out there, everyone around him was at risk. That had already been made painfully clear when he had gone after poor innocent people who he had just spoken to for a few moments. What would they do if he actually committed to someone? He shuddered at the thought.
No. He wasn't going to put someone through that again; not after he had seen his mother strapped to a bomb, Abigail had almost drowned, and Juliet…
He knew she would put on a brave face, say that he did the right thing in going after Abigail; she was his girlfriend after all. Not after today though.
Juliet had understood when he had gone on a date with her. How ironic that the night he caught the one that got away was the night they caught Mr. Yang, and that the night when he lost Abigail was the night he also lost Mr. Yin.
Something in him knew that this was the end. It was different than that night at the pier when he had been too terrified to go up to her. This was an ending, a final chapter in their relationship. They would go there separate ways, she would inspire the future leaders and he would annoy Lassiter until he cracked. Everyone would be safe from a killers insane schemes.
But then there was Juliet.
Their relationship had changed ever since that night so long ago when he had told her he loved her. He knew it was wrong and that he had given her hope and then shattered it when she realized the message was for Abigail. It wasn't fair for her, then again he had seen that way that Scott looked at her, clearly she had other options; options that wouldn't put her life at risk. But that was the difference between Jules and Abigail, Jules risked her life everyday, she was willing to make risks. She had almost died today! And all because of someone's game.
He and Abigail had had something special no doubt, but it was more of making up for lost time rather than something permanent. He would have committed, for once in his life he wasn't the one running away.
Right from the moment he had met Jules he had pursued her, of course it had been in his own playful way, but there had been something there.
Shawn knew what he had to do, maybe not now but soon.
Abigail was the one who got away, but Jules was the one who had been there all along.
