Tell Me a Joke

Lynette and Tom were sitting silently in Lynette's hospital room when Gabrielle came bursting through the door. Lynette gave Tom a look since she hadn't called her. Tom glanced back and shrugged. Lynette rolled her eyes and sighed. Tom took that as his cue to leave and give the ladies privacy.

"So, what happened?" Gabrielle asked as she sat in the chair that Tom had previously been occupying. He had been pretty vague on the phone. Gabrielle was freaking out. She had no idea what had put Lynette in the hospital. Was it the pregnancy, had Lynette's cancer come back...Gabrielle's mind was going into very dark places.

"I was having stomach pains and then I noticed I was bleeding so I got Tom to bring me here." Lynette answered.

"So, you think you're having a miscarriage?" Gabrielle asked.

Lynette sadly nodded.

"How bad was the bleeding?" Gabrielle asked.

"Not was just some spotting." Lynette answered.

"Well, that's a good sign. Maybe the pains were just a normal part of the pregnancy." Gabby said.

Lynette shrugged, "It's better to be safe than sorry."

"Very true," Gabrielle agreed. "Do you need anything?" She offered.

"Tell me a joke." Lynette said.

Gabrielle laughed. "You want me to tell you a joke?"

Lynette nodded. Gabrielle was a funny person when it came to comebacks and sarcastic remarks but she was not very good at telling jokes. Both girls knew this and it caused both of them to burst into hysterical laughter. The laughing was a nice distraction until Lynette's obstetrician came into the room.

"Mrs. Scavo, where's your husband?" He asked curiously.

"I'm...not sure." Lynette said. She had no idea where he had wandered off to.

The doctor opened his mouth to speak.

"She can stay." Lynette said, knowing her doctor was about to kick Gabrielle out.

"Are you sure?" The doctor confirmed.

Lynette nodded as the doctor began setting up the ultrasound machine. Lynette grabbed her friends hand as he rubbed the gel on her stomach and began moving the machine over it. Gabrielle and Lynette both stared at the screen, hoping for a heartbeat.

The doctor looked concerned before they found the heartbeats.

"There are heartbeats. They're weak but they're there. You didn't have a miscarriage." The doctor said.

Both women sighed in relief.

"We'll keep you here for a few hours just in case anything happens but you and the babies should be fine. Just keep coming in for your regular checkups and things." The doctor explained.

"Thank you so much doctor." Lynette said.

"You're welcome," Her doctor said before he left.

"See, you didn't lose them." Gabrielle said.

"You know, I haven't been very excited about this pregnancy but I was taking everything for granted. I want these babies." Lynette told her best friend.

"Do you really?" Gabby asked, knowing Lynette hadn't been very happy about being pregnant again. Especially with a second set of twins.

"I want them, I really do. And I'm going to try really hard to be a good mother this time." Lynette said.

Gabrielle smiled, "You're already a good mother."

"Thanks, so are you." Lynette replied.

Gabrielle kept smiling, "Now let me go find Tom so he can learn the good news."
