Brett picked up the phone, hesitated, and then started dialing a number for about the third time that hour. He glanced at the number written in the school directory. He slammed down the phone. He just couldn't do it. He held his head in his hands and fell backward onto his bed. He felt like screaming! He wondered why he had so much confidence with his first crush, but not now. Then he had a thought. Maybe this was his first real crush. He was so confused, he didn't know what to do. "Maybe I should call Eddie and Malcolm," he wondered aloud. "I always feel better after hanging out with my boys." So this time, when he picked up the phone, he dialed a conference call with the two. They agreed to an ice cream at the Dairy Queen. Brett's treat .
After they arrived, they started gossiping like a bunch of girls. "Man, you must be really annoyed at the cripple stealin' your girl!" Malcolm said. Eddie laughed.
"Well, I've been meaning to ask you guys- what if I told you I like someone else?" Brett asked. They both laughed.
"Yeah, right, man, you've liked Kendra ever since, like, fourth grade!" Brett sighed. He should have known his friends wouldn't have believed him.
"Ooooooooooooooooooooookay, Brett, well, let us know when you picked Lucy or Kendra!"
"Yeah, see ya!"
"Wait- who said anything about Lucy? Wait! Come here! Where did Lucy come from? WAIT! WE'RE NOT DONE HERE!" But they were already gone. Brett went home, depressed.
Brett stomped into his room and threw himself onto his bed. Not only did no one believe him but he was sure the person he liked did not like him back. Although, why would she? To her he was just a dumb jock but to him, she was gorgeous and sweet and anything a guy could wish for. He dialed her number one more time, and this time he actually went through with it.
"Hi, this is Patrice, I can't come to the phone right now, but please leave a message."
