He Knows

Disclaimer: I do not own Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy or characters. Italics are from 'Behemoth.'

Summary: Surely, he knows. He must know. Alek/Deryn drabble, set in Behemoth.

"[…] I mean, if things were different, I'd want to stay here too."

"You would?"

"Well, maybe it's silly. But the last few days, it's like something's changing inside me. Everything I ever knew is upside down. Sometimes it's almost as if I'm… in love…"

Surely, he knows. He must know.

Especially by now. I'm certain Dr. Barrow suspects, and the Count won't be far off.

He must know. How can he not? We've spent so much time together: in the Alps, holding him close to me as I threatened his life with the dull edge of a blade against his Stormwalker, the fencing lessons he has taught me, watching the Lady Boffin's eggs…

How can he not know?

How can he not know that I'm a girl pretending to be a boy? A girl that is falling for him?

How can he not know of his charm? Of his ability to make me want to help him, even if it means treason?

Surely, he knows.

"Just what are you saying?"

Alek shook his head. "Perhaps I'm putting this stupidly. But it's almost as though… I'm in love with your ship.

"You're in love… with the Leviathan?"

Can Alek really be this dense? Could he not know that I am a girl, unable to flirt and convey to him what I really want to say and what I want to feel? But that I can't unless I want to be tried for treason?

"It feels right here." Alek shrugged. "As if this is where I'm meant to be."

Oh… he knows.

Mar.01.11: Little drabble from Scott Westefeld's amazing "Leviathan" trilogy, an alternate-history steampunk WWI novel. I suggest everyone read it - it's amazing! Another newfound love of mine that I might dabble in before I update my HP stories? Suzeanne Collins's "Hunger Games" trilogy. :) Enjoy! - Kneazle
