He sat in his comfortable chair by the fire, staring at the crackling flames and enjoying the scent of the seasoned cherrywood. He thought he had seen it all, thought nothing could surprise him after eighty-something years of life, the best part of that spent in dwarven caves and trudging bitter-cold tundras and finding friends, true friends. But nothing, absolutely nothing, compared to what he was feeling now, as he listened to his beloved bustle around in the kitchen, making them both hot, soothing tea to end their long day.
As if she could hear his thoughts, Catti-brie appeared next to him, placing their too-hot mugs on the little side table. He reached for her and settled her on his lap, pulling her snugly into his arms, content when she lowered her head to his shoulder and sighed.
"I love you."
"I know you do. I love you too."
"Good. I needed to say it. And I need to hear it."
"With all my heart. Forever."
"What shall we name our baby?"
Yes, he finally found something that could surprise him after all.
