Eowyn of Rohan was an odd child, and many people knew that. Her mother had passed at her birth, so her brother, her father, her uncle and her cousin, surrounded by boys and their ways, raised Eowyn. Some people would remark, even when Eowyn was a toddler, that she acted like she was a little boy more often then not. Eowyn was treated like a boy most of the time when she was a child; she was given an education like a male child would.
The only reason why Eowyn was given this education was because her uncle was the King of Rohan, for her mother had been Theowyn, King Theoden's sister. Many people had told Eowyn that she resembled Theowyn to an uncanny sort of way, while her older brother, Eomer had resembled her father. Many people had told Eowyn that she was a beautiful child, and that she would make a good Lady of Rohan one day.
These were wasted words, for Eowyn wanted nothing more then to be a Rider of the Mark, but since she was a girl, it was impossible. She would ignore her lessons on how to be a lady, and instead, watch her brother and her cousin practice their swordsmanship. It was fascinating to her, and nothing was more entertaining then watching her cousin, Theodred, unarm her brother with a simple stroke of his sword.
One day, when Eowyn had only ten winters behind her, Eomer had been taking his lessons when Theodred had none, she watched him practice his maneuvers by himself. Eowyn then picked up a spare sword, dulled down so it wouldn't harm anybody, and was shocked at how heavy it was. Theodred looked at her, curiosity in his eyes as he watched his little cousin copy the move he had just completed. He then laughed at Eowyn.
"Do you think you can become a soldier?" Theodred said through his laughter, and Eowyn glared at him. Theodred then walked over to his little cousin, and corrected her grip before he began to teach her the basics. It was that day when Eowyn, too, began to practice her swordsmanship alongside her brother and her cousin.
Soon, she was almost as good as Eomer was, until Theoden had found out what they had been doing. He had yelled at them, and scolded Eomer and Theodred for letting Eowyn even touch a sword. Eowyn was fourteen by then, and she was smart enough now to realize that her father would want her to get married off to a royal man now. Eowyn wasn't about to become a committed wife like she was supposed to be, she still needed to have adventures, she needed to fight for Rohan's name.
But after that day, Eowyn wasn't allowed to touch a sword again, and she didn't. She became a practical Lady, though, the longing she had to fight in a battle never died. She wished she were a man, so she could please her uncle with what she wanted to be. Eowyn did not want to upset him, so she pleased him by becoming the woman she was expected to be.
She watched as her cousin was killed in battle, and as her brother was banished, all the while her uncle was under a blind eye, and under the advice of the adviser, Grima Wormtongue. While her uncle was blind, Eowyn took up her sword again, and she practiced, though many years had passed, she still recalled fighting.
Eowyn got her chance to fight in battle, and, with the help of Meriadoc Brandybuck, she had killed the Witch King, though, she couldn't fight in the battle she longed to fight in. She had lost everybody but her brother, but, she met somebody else who had lost family like she had; though he had no one left.
Eowyn met Faramir, son of Denethor, who opened up her eyes, and made her believe, that just being herself, she could finally please somebody.
