Planet Mobius, the Knothole...

The people of the Knothole walked through the village. It was a peaceful day. The sun shined, but it was getting late. It was just a few days since the thwarted assassination of the king and the interruption of Patch and Sally's wedding, and that was just the beginning of the chaos that had been going on lately.

Bunnie Rabbot's hut was amongst the other residents of the village, in the most eastern part of the Knothole. She sat on the edge of her bed after have awaking from a midday nap. Still sporting her pink leotard and bulky robotic legs and left arm. Her spirits lifted now that Antoine was back. She was happy he was with her again because she had been so lonely as of late. However, even after the long stint of their on and off relationship over the years, they took a break after he'd come back. Because they were not feeling that fire they used to in their relationship since their time away. Especially with everything going on right now…

They were in turbulent times the last few months…

Antoine coming back wasn't as great as she had expected either…

Bunnie yawned and rubbed her eyes, then glanced behind herself taking in the golden evening sunlight pouring through her window. It started with the decline of the Kingdom of Acorn as Eggman's relentless attacks over the years had finally dwindled them down. Sally and Sonic had a big spat in front of the entire village. And to top it all off, their Antis had infiltrated them in the last few months, which they weren't even aware there were Antis as of until late.

How did all these events happen so closely with one another and back to back? She didn't know…

Life was strange like that sometimes. Sometimes bad things happened…

So at this moment in time, all these things were happening. It was hard to believe.

When Antoine's kidnapping took place by their Anti's, she let her emotions get the best of her. Anger and shame flushed over her, turning away from her window. She stood and made her way out of her hut and walked in the forest's direction. Her face troubled, she still felt horrible about it. They didn't even know there were Anti versions of themselves until a few days ago.

She was jealous…

She thought Antoine had abandoned her to be with Sally just out of the blue. The Antis came from an alternate version of Mobius to cause chaos, and they did.

Bunnie paused in her tracks, because in hindsight with Antoine's behavior shift being so drastic it was obvious it wasn't him. But she didn't see it...

Heck, that they even existed was crazy enough. Bunnie sighed as she continued to walk. Passing through a section of the Knothole, where houses hugged more closely together. She heard mild chatter all throughout her pass through, children playing, and people laboring, banging away at metal and chopping trees. It was a warm setting despite all the drama.

She turned onto the dirt path that mixed with patches of grass until it was all grass and verdant dense woodlands was before her. She stepped onto the green grass and stared up into the blue and white skies as she walked. A warm breeze blew, swaying the nearby trees and foliage. The surrounding forest had an aromatic smell of fresh soils.

She broke her eyes away from the sky, moving towards a nearby babbling broke. The sound of the stream of water was calming as she walked with the stream further away from the Knothole. This Anti stuff was on top of the Knothole being in danger of being destroyed for real lately. That and Sally slapping Sonic in front of the entire village just a week before that. There was just a lot going on right now…

The Freedom Fighters' morale was at an all-time low. And Sonics… hoo boy…

His trust rocked…

He didn't trust them anymore…

Antoine, who they now knew, was Patch. His behavior shift went on for months. So, he had been impersonating Antoine for almost half a year.

Her reaction to Antoine suddenly becoming so mean and cold overnight was less than graceful. Because she was the first to notice, obviously. She was at first completely taken aback. But when he started talking sideways at her, she gave him a piece of her mind. She remained upset and angry at his behavior and her bad temper remained the entire time Patch was impersonating Antoine.

She didn't know how to respond to his sudden coldness, so she resorted to anger. She thought it was their relationship breaking down… that maybe the war had changed him and they didn't feel the same about each other anymore...

He was a completely different person…

He didn't want to talk to her anymore. He didn't even want to be around her…

And she accepted it because it shocked her so much how he changed…

It broke her heart…

And with the threat of Eggman getting very close to destroying the Knothole, everyone in the Knothole was feeling emotionally unstable. It was the perfect storm…

Bunnies organic hand ran across a tree with white bark as she continued to walk. It was smooth and felt like swirls of water on her fingertips.

Within a few months' time, Patch used Antoine's positions in the Acorn Kingdom Army to weasel his way into King Max's confidence. Unfortunately, Patch was a competent soldier, unlike Antoine, and this impressed King Max. Antoine and his family were from high class, so his connections made it easier for Patch to do what he did.

The Freedom Fighters were skeptical of Patch the entire time.

It wasn't until Patch was in enough good graces of King Max and Queen Alicia that his plans revved forward. When the king and queen went on a tour to create a collation against Eggman with the remaining free states because they were all under the same tyranny.

They promoted Patch to the rank of commander, to the Freedom fighter's dismay.

They interrogated Patch in the end and discovered all of which he had done. To which he gleefully told before they sent him back to Moebius.

He saw his time to strike once he became commander and had been slowly poisoning King Max with a substance native to Moebius. Also, at the time he laced Antoine's father Armand's food with an even stronger dose of the substance.

The negotiations with the other nations failed, though. Even if the Freedom Fighters were the one asset that kept Eggman at bay and kept them all alive. They felt they would fare better alone. It was sort of devastating in a way because if they all didn't do something soon, Eggman would destroy them all…

The sad truth was that the other nations knew the Kingdom of Acorn was first on Eggman's list, and they probably felt their plea for help would not benefit them.

Eggman had a special desire to destroy the Knothole because there was something here stopping him…

His rival…

His main foe…

His most hated enemy…

Sonic…

And if he could destroy him, he could destroy anything…

They weren't strong enough to fend off Eggman alone any longer, though, and they would let them fall…

Bunnie moved away from the stream of water out onto open fields bountiful with clovers and grass again, getting nearer to the outskirts of the Knothole. From here, the forest was disappearing, and it left barren plains as far as the eye could see. She walked along the edge line of the forest, still lost in thought.

By the point the negotiations had failed, Patch made his move again, dosing King Max with a stronger dose of the poison while on tour, forcing them to return to the Knothole. He even stopped his medications. Yet despite all this, he still trusted Patch.

Bunnie frowned, knowing the only reason he did so is because of the class heritage they shared…

But in taking away his meds, not soon after, it sent King Max into a coma. But before he did, King Max announced he would step down and allow Sally to take over and for Patch to be her husband and king.

When Sonic heard the news, he sprang into action. He tried to point out how crazy what was happening was. But they sort of blew him off...

In combination with Sally slapping him not too long ago, they thought he was jealous. And with tensions high, people around him were so preoccupied with their own stuff they just didn't care…

They concluded Sally getting married was going to happen someday anyway, because she was a princess. He was making a bigger deal out of it because he had a history with her. And who better than someone with high-class status like herself than Antoine, who was really Patch.

She was one of those people who blew him off…

She'd made absolutely no progress with Antoine, and Sally wasn't talking to anyone. Sally isolated herself completely distraught by her father's condition, her spat with Sonic, the responsibility and weight of suddenly becoming leader of the kingdom, and taking that on with her family and kingdom in decline and on the brink of destruction from a tyrant.

She, of course, felt a certain type of way about Sally getting wedded to the person she had feelings for. Sally couldn't look her in the eyes, she wouldn't even have an audience with her or anyone…

Patch manipulated Sally's fragile emotional state, but at the time, it seemed everything was just going out of control. That Antoine was doing all these things, and no one questioned it because of all the chaos going on.

It was in the last few days when Sonic, who was Scourge, appeared and began flirting with her and many other women. But she did it because her emotional state was not well either…

Bunnie hopped over a large log as she continued to walk.

Scourge showed up right before Patch's discovery, so while she was with Scourge, Sonic was out crusading against Sally's union.

Despite Sonic going on a crusade to stop Patch and Sally's wedding, she just went with it…

She let herself go…

But it wasn't just because she was lonely. She ignored who she thought to be, Sonic's out of the blue behavior because she only cared about what she wanted…

Which was making Antoine who was Patch jealous…

Since she was getting no response from Sally, the only thing she thought she could do to elect a response from Antoine was his biggest trigger… his jealousy and rivalry with Sonic…

She was unsure of Sonic's advances because of their friendship, but because of her fragile state at the time and what was going on, she gave in to the advances to make Antoine jealous. It's not like she would say no to Sonic if she was single and under the right conditions. Yeah, she would have a different response to him…

She ignored who she thought to be, Sonic acting out of character just to make Antoine mad. She thought just the sight of Sonic being so close to her would surely get his attention. That it would make him come back to her…

She messed around with Scourge when she didn't know it was Sonic, because ever since she and Antoine had been together now and then, Antoine's jealousy of Sonic would rile him up. She had hoped it would've worked. However, not knowing it was Patch, it had no effect. She had used very low tactics to achieve her goal without realizing the implications of what she had done.

First, she had been using one of Antoine's worst feelings against him. Second, thank goodness it wasn't the real Sonic. She almost used Sonic like he meant nothing to her.

Sonic was one of her bestest friends…

That couldn't be farthest from the truth. She adored him. But her actions said different….

But alas, it did not sway Patch, as she and everyone discovered it was not Antoine but Patch. Patch couldn't care less…

And in the aftermath, after she calmed down, she realized what she had done…

After realizing it wasn't Antoine who was ignoring her, she felt mortified…

Bunnie swerved back into the forest, taking notice of the flora in the area as she continued to walk. Red tipped, yellow, and pink flowers she was unsure of. It sure was pretty…

Before Patch's discovery, Sonic, in a last-ditch effort since everyone was ignoring him and going along with the craziness, went to Castle Acorn to talk to Sally. Shed continued to isolate herself until that point. But Patch confronted Sonic and threatened him with his sword in a not too subtle way to stop trying to interfere.

Of course, Sonic didn't care. He broke into the celebratory dinner and Patch had him arrested. Something the people would never do to Sonic, but they did because tensions were so high. Sonic escaped knowing something bad was about to happen with this Antoine, who was acting weird. He hurriedly went and retrieved Elias, Sally's brother, and firstborn. He had the right to take the throne and subsequently put the brakes on Sally's wedding. He fled the Knothole some time ago to start a new life, feeling shame for his hesitancy to take the throne as his father King Max wanted. After explaining the situation Elias was on board and joined Sonic back to the Knothole with his wife and child.

And because of this, as Patch explained before he was taken away, he was just about to kill King Max, but because of Sonic, he switched his sights to Elias. Then his wife and child later. If not for Sonic, King Max would be dead. After they crowned Elias, Patch tried to stab Elias with a needle of the poison which would have killed him slowly over time so he wouldn't be suspected.

During the crowning ceremony, Sonic watched Patch like a hawk and saw Patch's needle. Sonic pushed Elias to safety and knocked Patch to the floor. They fought, and the rest is history. Sonic exposed Patch by using the Star Post, a machine used to travel to other zones created by Tails, Rotor, and Nicole, to travel to Moebius and rescue Antoine and prove to everyone Patch was an imposter. Unfortunately, in the chaos Armand, Antoine's father, succumbed to the poison Patch had given to him and passed away…

They didn't know where Scourge disappeared to. He slipped away not too long after Patch's discovery. No one was even really aware of Scourge except for the women he flirted with because, while Scourge was doing his deeds, simultaneously Sonic was trying to stop Patch. So no one really noticed him, and he and Sonic didn't overlap because they were both on the move the entire time. Although Sonic was the cause, the Antis exposure became fact.

Sonic was the only one who sniffed out Patch…

Alone he did it…

With support from no one…

She wanted to say because of the circumstances that someone had to understand why she acted the way she did. But that was not an excuse. What she did was wrong as much as it pained her…

That dirty hedgehog Scourge took advantage of her and many other women. He even flirted with Amy. Although she knew that was an excuse to mask her own wrong doings she knew. Bunnie reached the outer rim of the Knothole and, not going any place in particular, she continued wandering through the forest.

Bunnie hung her head low, walking along. She looked over her bulky robotic body parts, remembering the icy grip of death before Sonic had saved her from being robotticized. She squeezed her hands into a fist with shame…

After her embarrassing forte with Scourge, she saw in her weakest moments how... evil she could be...

Bunnie spotted a stump over in another open area and went over and sat in the quiet of nature. She felt guilt and shame about Sonic's recently unsettling behavior. It was like he was half the man he used to be…

He'd pulled back from everyone and he didn't look like he was coming back…

Since then, everyone had been screwing their heads back on. Sally had come out of Castle Acorn and been back with the Freedom Fighters the last few days. With Elias back and taking care of the throne, it freed her to come to the Freedom Fighters full time again. The citizens of the Knothole because of Sonics actions had calmed a little, but still were on edge because of Eggman. Because they all saw how crazy what was happening with the royal family and Sally was, but they said nothing because they were fearful. The Freedom Fighters, of course, apologized profusely to Sonic. They either did nothing or were neutral to help him expose Patch.

Everyone was getting their heads on straight again. Sally was taking it the hardest after her spat with Sonic and then almost getting married to an imposter. The citizens were at least still supportive of her, but she was getting back to her old self quick and so were the guys…

Except for Sonic, that is…

He pulled back on them and had been distant the last few days…

Antoine explained why Scourge kidnapped him when he returned. Patch was trying to banish Scourge to Prime Mobius where they were, so he could take over Moebius. Traveling with similar technology to the Star Post, a machine that let them travel to different zones created by Anti Rotor. But Scourge caught on and defeated him. He knocked Patch out, shaved his beard, and sent him to prime Mobius instead. And to insult him more, he kidnapped Antoine, forcing him to take his place here. It forced Antoine to impersonate Patch as it stranded him in Moebius for almost six months.

Scourge ditched the Anti Freedom Fighters and was not a part of their team when Antoine's kidnapping took place. So, they were not aware Antoine was Patch, and Scourge did not tell them or care. Somehow, he survived.

Antoine's attitude had changed for the better after his kidnapping, but that had caused some friction in their relationship. Her betrayal with Scourge and him being quite pleased at hearing Sonic being embarrassed in front of the entire village raised tensions between them. Her actions were wrong despite the circumstances and his gleefulness at hearing something bad happening to their friend because of his jealousy upset her. Both actions led them to this temporary breakup they currently had.

Even though Sonic saved him and brought him back to her. Antoine was not at all pleased when he found out about Scourge. He told her to admit any feelings about Sonic. Bunnie told him the truth, saying she just used him, but after saying those words, she felt wrong…

In hindsight… after all of that…

It was like everyone had turned their backs on Sonic…

They ignored his pleas….

Well.. they kinda did…

Patch left his mark on Mobius even though he didn't take over. King Max came out of his coma, but he was wheelchair-bound now. And Antoine's father, Armand, passed away a few days ago from the poison Patch had given him…

There was only one bright spot in the form of Nicole having some good news that might help them deal with their problems. Bunnie closed her eyes and took in a deep breath, smelling pine in the forest air.

Her thoughts were interrupted as a swirl of wind surrounded the area and Sonic screeched to a stop in front of her. Bunnie's eyes shot open, and she laid her hands on the stump, leaning back. She smiled at the cocky grin he always held.

Sonic raised an eyebrow, putting his fist on his hips. "Yo. What are you doing out here, Bunnie?"

"Nothen much. Jus clearin my head. I am kinda restless with what Nicole was saying tha other day." Bunnie said with a smile.

"Yeah yeah, she said she could create a city with tiny robots or something. It sure would be nice." Sonic said with a thoughtful face.

"We wouldn't be infiltrated so easy neither..." Bunnie said slightly looking away.

But she saw that Sonic visibly had become uneasy. She knew she had hurt him with what she had done. She had been trying to deny it in her head, but seeing it in person made her heart break.

Bunnie stood from her stump with a light frown on her face "I nevva meant to do thet Sonic, it's jus..."

"Forget it, love makes you do crazy things..." Sonic said smirking a bit, making it an exit conversation as he turned and walked away. He just got here…

Bunnie donned a worried expression as her brows wrinkled together. "Sonic wait!"

Sonic stopped and looked back, blinking his eyes in confusion and Bunnie spoke with concern still clear on her face "Lets hang... we haven't in forevva..."

Sonic pondered for a hot second, although he still seemed hesitant. He spoke unevenly, "I'm actually kinda busy right now…"

But Bunnie donned a dry expression because just by the tone of his voice, she knew that was a lie. He just didn't want to because… of what happened...

Understandable…

"Come on Sonic…" she said, turning in the opposite direction.

And Sonic, seeing his getaway blocked, just followed. Bunnie fell into step with him. They made their way back to the Knothole. All the while, she observed Sonic's body language. He kept a suitable distance away from her. He didn't glance at her, didn't smile…

Trust was definitely broken. The guys had been trying to help restore Sonic to his previous self by building trust with him again in various ways. She had seen Tails and Sonic spending more time together lately. Sally spent more time with him, too. Bunnie, as a major offender, hoped this spur-of-the-moment action would lead to something good. They traveled to where most people spent their time socializing in the Knothole, in the middle of the village. The area was pretty loud, but that was the point.

They both took a seat on a log next to each other and conversed. Sonic spoke looking over to her with a serious expression "We're going to be in trouble if we don't get some kind of place to stay since we know the Dark Legion has teamed up with Eggman."

"Don't they mess with mechanical thangs?" Bunnie said, sounding a bit worried.

"Yep. The Legion is under control of Lien-Da. Did you know they've been rounding up the people Eggman had robotticized?" Sonic said, looking away.

"No, I didn't. I hope they keep their paws to themselves..." Bunnie said with a frown.

"I don't want to find out. Some people in the Knothole have some robo parts, you know, other than you." Bunnie nodded and Sonic spoke, looking at the ground with a frown. "But that's what the Legion does best. If they hacked you, we wouldn't know what would happen. That's what Rotor said, anyway."

"I was hopen he wouldn't say thet..." Bunnie said, also looking at the ground as their conversation died. They both quietly looked in opposite directions.

They remained silent next to each other while everyone around them was talking up a storm. She hadn't really sat and talked with Sonic much since her two-timing with Scourge. Like Sonic, she and everyone had been kind of avoiding one another because of the circumstances…

Everyone was trying to keep their friendships intact, although Sonic was the most resistant.

Antoine and she spent more time with each other than she remembered now. Rotor was busy. Tails was young, and Sally and Sonic were always doing something. She and Antoine were just bound to happen, she guessed. She glanced at Sonic. He still looked burnt after all the stuff that went down recently. She didn't think he was one to hold a grudge, but when he found out what she did, he looked at her and everyone differently.

He didn't say a word when he found out she used Scourge to make Antoine jealous… that she essentially used him… like he was nothing… his eyes wide… he just walked away…

On the inside, she grimaced at the memory. It was bad, and it stuck with her. Bunnie looked into the sky, hesitating as she spoke. "You… don't think I meant it… do you… Sonic?"

Staring at the ground, Sonic pinched his mouth. Bunnie hung in the air, awaiting his response. All the Freedom Fighters spoke about recent happenings directly. Sonic did not… he avoided it…

He did not speak of his feelings… it was obvious it hurt him…

"You did it."

His simple response was profound. Bunnie frowned as she stared upwards, hearing the truth being laid bare as he spoke again, "And there it is…"

It didn't really matter if she meant it; she knew. But it hurt to hear a bad thing you've done. But that didn't make her stop wanting to be friends with someone. She felt it was possible to work through anything.

It seemed Sonic did not feel the same…

He used to be open with his feelings. But with all the recent happenings bearing down on all of them, it seemed he changed his feelings on that as well…

Bunnie tore her eyes away from the sky, looking at him with a determined look. "Look sugah hog… jus try to undastand we are yuer friends. We're always gonna have yiah back, no matter what. Even if we have fought and tussled in the past."

Sonic kept his eyes on the ground as he spoke again "Yeah I hear you…" his next response didn't warrant confidence though "When things die down, we'll see…"

Bunnie looked upset again, seeing his trust still not there. She looked at him but he didn't look back at her…

No matter how she tried to deny it, there was some bad water between her and Sonic now. When it was chaotic things that really hurt people were overlooked because of what was going on. When things slowed down, you got to see what a person was really like. When there were no more games, nothing to hide, it exposed everything when an individual was acting completely their self...

He got to see his friends at their worst…

And he didn't trust them anymore…

He was waiting…

When was it going to happen again?

Was he seeing who they really were?

When it was quiet enough… would he see who they thought they were because he didn't trust them any longer?

Was he talking about her…

Now, as they sat next to each other, they were both looking for an excuse to get away. Bunnie wondered were they even friends anymore because Sonic, at least right now, didn't look like he wanted to talk to her. It washed away the feeling of dread as the alarms in the village went off, though. The people within the village scattered, and chaos ensued. Sonic and Bunnie shot up, looking at each other. They both nodded with serious expressions, running in the direction of the Freedom Fighters' hut.

Beta chapter, lets see how this turns out.
