Chapter 50 Hyrule's Last Hope
"Sabrina..." called an echoing feminine voice. "Sabrina..."
Sabrina woke up in a white void and realized that she no longer had a physical form. It was strange to not feel the weight of her body.
"Sabrina..." the voice called again. "Can you hear me?"
The voice that called her name was unfamiliar. "Who's calling me?" she asked, searching in all directions.
"It is I, Farore, the Goddess of Courage and Creation," the goddess answered. "Your physical form is deceased. I have reincarnated you as a fairy. Ten years have passed and now it is time for your son to begin his journey. You will guide him on his quest to save Hyrule."
Surprised, Sabrina asked, "Save Hyrule? What happened to Hyrule while I was..." her voice trailed as she thought of the appropriate word, "dead?"
"Dion has possessed Ganondorf. He has already gone to the other races, demanding they hand over their Spiritual Stones. He wants the Triforce and he will stop at nothing to obtain it," Farore explained.
Sabrina remembered what the fortune-teller predicted. So that's what she meant about Ganondorf becoming evil? Sabrina hated how Dion possessed her friend, but at the same time, she was relieved it wasn't of Ganondorf's own choosing. Then she remembered what Farore wanted her to do. "How am I, as a fairy, supposed to guide my son?" asked Sabrina. What could a tiny fairy do? It's not like she could physically help him.
"Growing up as a princess and exploring Hyrule has made you very knowledgeable about Hyrule and its lore. Your son will encounter many dangerous creatures as he ventures inside dungeons. He will need your knowledge of monsters to battle against them."
Sabrina felt honored that a goddess selected her to guide someone on their quest because of her knowledge. She would end up contributing to Hyrule's salvation due to her obsession. Somehow she knew that one day her studious behavior would come in handy, despite what her judgmental peers had thought.
"Do you accept your destiny?"
"Yes, of course, I look forward to aiding my son on his quest," Sabrina replied confidently. It would fill her motherly soul with joy to catch up with her son.
"I'm pleased to hear that, but do realize that you are forbidden to tell him who you really are in relation to him," said Farore.
Sabrina's excitement ebbed. If she had a physical form she would have frowned. "Why can't I?"
"He would ask too many questions about your background and his. The chosen hero needs to stay focused on his task to save Hyrule, not his personal origins," Farore stated matter-of-factly. "Now that you know what you must do, the Deku Tree will summon you shortly. Farewell, Navi the fairy."
I suppose that's my new name, Sabrina thought. I can't wait to fly! Maybe this won't be so bad after all.
"Navi..." called a warm, fatherly voice she recognized as the Deku Tree. "Navi, where art thou? Come hither..." he beckoned.
Navi opened her eyes and saw several leaves and branches above her. She found herself lying supine, and then sat up. Her newly obtained blue skin and aura caught her attention. She touched her face and her wings. Unsure of herself and her abilities, Navi eased herself into the air, successfully keeping afloat. I'm flying! Then Navi remembered she was summoned. The new fairy flew out from the Deku Tree's branches and hovered in front of him.
Once he saw Navi, the wise tree began. "Oh, Navi the fairy..." he said, his voice wavering from exhaustion. "Listen to my words, the words of the Deku Tree..."
Navi waited for him to continue, flapping her wings at a steady pace.
"Dost thou sense it?" he asked. "The climate of evil descending upon this realm."
Navi closed her eyes and concentrated. Her senses were greatly enhanced in her new form. She could sense her surroundings and other entities unlike when she was human. I suppose fairies are more in tune with the climate. That makes sense, she thought.
"Malevolent forces even now are mustering to attack our land of Hyrule..." he struggled to say. "For so long, the Kokiri Forest, the source of life, has stood as a barrier, deterring outsiders and maintaining the order of the world. But... before this tremendous evil power, even my power is as nothing," he admitted. "It seems the time has come for the boy without a fairy to begin his journey. The youth whose destiny it is to lead Hyrule to the path of justice and truth..."
Navi listened to his words, but was exceedingly bored. Wow, he wasn't this long-winded the last two times I spoke with him, she thought.
"Navi... go now! Find our young friend and guide him to me. I do not have much time left. Fly, Navi, fly! The fate of the forest, nay, the world, depends upon thee!"
Navi catapulted herself away from the guardian tree much harder than she intended and almost crashed into the ground. She flapped her wings harder and regained altitude, but had to maneuver through the zigzagged passageway. Before her was Mido, standing with his hands on his hips, blocking anyone from entering the meadow. Losing altitude again, Navi almost crashed landed but instead flew under Mido's legs. At the last second she quickly regained altitude, but at a much greater height than she felt comfortable. This is too high! Navi eased herself to a lower distance and looked to her right at a girl sitting on one of the tree house's balconies. "Hello!" she hailed with her new shrill voice that could only belong to a fairy. Navi covered her mouth in shock. My voice, it's different!
Navi accepted her new voice and continued onward. She found a good height that wasn't too low or too high. Navi flew near a scruffy-looking boy, trying his absolute hardest to lift a small boulder beside a tree house. The awkward sight made her giggle inwardly, and as a result, she felt guilty. Feeling obligated to say something, she cried, "Hey!"
Looking up, Navi realized she flew too far. She turned around and searched for the spare tree house she stayed in years ago. Her intuition told her Link lived in the spare tree house. Navi spotted the tree house and nodded. Again, she boosted herself at a greater speed than she could comfortably handle and crashed against a wooden fence. "Ow!" she yelped, rubbing her head. Navi shook off the pain and flew through the space between the planks at a slower speed. Finally she made it to the tree house and entered, anticipating what Link looked like.
When Navi entered Link's tree house, she saw him sleeping restlessly on his small bed. He looks just like what I envisioned him to be, she thought, flying closer to him. Navi hovered above his bed. "Hello, Link!" she exclaimed. "Wake up!"
It was as though she had never spoken. Link was still dreaming heavily.
"The Great Deku Tree wants to talk to you! Link, get up!" she shouted.
Link cooed and turned his head the opposite direction.
Navi frowned. There's something he doesn't have in common with his father, she thought, remembering how Antony always awakened, bright-eyed every morning. At least his room is clean, Navi thought, looking around at his room. She darted up and down. "Hey! C'mon! Can Hyrule's destiny really depend on such a lazy boy?"
The loudness of her voice finally roused Link from his dream. He yawned, and rubbing his eyes, sat up on his bed and then faced Navi. A blue fairy? That's not like the pink ones everyone else has. I wonder what she's doing here? Can she be my... guardian fairy? Nah, probably not. For some reason the Deku Tree doesn't want me to have one. I've told him many times how much I want one so I can be like the others.
Navi stopped flying rapidly and sighed in relief. "You finally woke up! I'm Navi the fairy!" she introduced herself to the sleepy yet listening boy. "The Great Deku Tree asked me to be your partner from now on!" Resisting the urge to reveal the truth, Navi remembered what Farore said and pretended they were strangers. "Nice to meet you!" she said brightly.
Link was a reserved boy who kept his emotions inside. He rarely expressed anger, sadness, or joy. Unless he felt something profoundly, Link was usually unreadable. Finally! I have a fairy! Mido can't tease me anymore about being less of a Kokiri. Mido tormented him ever since he could remember. Today it would end.
Navi turned her back on Link, facing the exit. "The Great Deku Tree has summoned you! So let's get going, right now!"
Link nodded and hopped up from his bed. I can't wait for Mido to see Navi, he thought as he stared at Navi, who was leading him out of his house. I wonder why the Deku Tree has decided to finally grant me a fairy, and I wonder why he summoned me. It's not like him to summon us. I guess I'll find out...
Link and Navi proceeded onward to fulfill their destiny to save Hyrule from the rising evil forces.
