Chapter 23: Final Duel – Part 2
"It's the moment everyone here is waiting for!" Chancellor Sheppard announced. "Our star graduate Zane Truesdale will have his final duel before leaving to become a pro duelist."
Everyone applauded Zane as he approached the dueling arena.
"And now let's applaud his opponent Jaden Kaiba." Sheppard said as Jaden positioned himself on the other side of the arena. He was also applauded.
Zane did the first draw. "I summon Proto-Cyber Dragon (LIGHT, Level 3, 1100 ATK, 600 DEF, Machine/Effect – This card's name becomes "Cyber Dragon" while on the field.) in Attack Position. I set a face down card and end my turn."
"My turn!" Jaden declared as he drew a card. "I summon Elemental HERO Burstinatrix (FIRE, Level 3, 1200 ATK, 800 DEF, Warrior – A flame manipulator who was the first Elemental HERO woman. Her Burstfire burns away villainy.) in Attack Position. I now set and play Burst Impact (Spell – You can activate this card when a "Elemental Hero Burstinatrix" card is face-up on your side of the field. All cards on the field except "Elemental Hero Burstinatrix" are destroyed, and the destroyed monster's controller receives damage equal to the number of monsters destroyed x 300.). Say goodbye to your monster and 300 Life Points!" He triumphantly said.
Jaden 4000 LP – Zane 3700 LP
"And that's not all!" Jaden said. "Burstinatrix, attack Zane's Life Points directly!"
Jaden 4000 LP – Zane 2500 LP
"I set a face down card and end my turn." Jaden said.
"My turn." Zane replied and drew a card. "I play Mystical Space Typhoon (Quick-Play Spell – Target 1 Spell/Trap on the field; destroy that target.) to destroy your face down card." Said card turned out to be a Hero Barrier (Trap – Negate 1 attack from an opponent's monster. You must control a face-up "Elemental HERO" monster to resolve this effect.) "Since there's a monster on your side of the field and there aren't any on mine, I'll Special Summon Cyber Dragon (LIGHT, Level 5, 2100 ATK, 1600 DEF, Machine/Effect – If only your opponent controls a monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand).) in Attack Position. I now summon another Proto-Cyber Dragon in Attack Position." Jaden gulped. "Cyber Dragon, attack Elemental HERO Burstinatrix." Jaden lost Burstinatrix and 900 Life Points.
Jaden 3100 LP – Zane 2500 LP
"Proto-Cyber Dragon, attack his Life Points directly." Zane commanded.
Zane 2500 LP – Jaden 2000 LP
"I set a face down card and end my turn." Zane said and Jaden drew a card. "I play Pot of Greed (Spell – Draw 2 cards.). I now play Polymerization (Spell - Fusion Summon 1 Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using monsters from your hand or field as Fusion Material.) to fuse Elemental HERO Sparkman (LIGHT, Level 4, 1600 ATK, 1400 DEF, Warrior – An Elemental HERO and a warrior of light who proficiently wields many kinds of armaments. His Static Shockwave cuts off the path of villainy.) and Elemental HERO Clayman (EARTH, Level 4, 800 ATK, 2000 DEF, Warrior – An Elemental HERO with a clay body built-to-last. He'll preserve his Elemental HERO colleagues at any cost.) to Summon Elemental HERO Thunder Giant (LIGHT, Level 6, 2400 ATK, 1500 DEF, Warrior/Fusion/Effect – "Elemental HERO Sparkman" + "Elemental HERO Clayman" – Must be Fusion Summoned and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. Once per turn: You can discard 1 card to target 1 face-up monster on the field with original ATK less than the ATK of this card; destroy that target.) in Attack Position. I now discard one card from my hand to activate Thunder Giant's effect. Thunder Giant, destroy Cyber Dragon!"
"I play Puzzle Reborn (Trap – If exactly 1 monster you control (and no other cards) is destroyed by a card effect: Target that monster; Special Summon that target.) to bring back my Cyber Dragon." Zane replied.
"Okay then." Jaden shrugged. "Elemental HERO Thunder Giant, attack Cyber Dragon!"
"I tribute Proto-Cyber Dragon to activate Attack Reflector Unit (Trap – Tribute 1 "Cyber Dragon". Special Summon 1 "Cyber Barrier Dragon" from your hand or Deck.)." Zane said. "Your attack is now negated by Cyber Barrier Dragon (LIGHT, Level 6, 800 ATK, 2800 DEF, Machine/Effect – This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned except with "Attack Reflector Unit". Once per turn, while this card is in Attack Position, your opponent's next attack is negated.)."
"I set a face down card and summon Wroughtweiler (EARTH, Level 3, 800 ATK, 1200 DEF, Machine/Effect – When this card is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard: Target 1 "Elemental HERO" card and 1 "Polymerization" in your Graveyard; add both those targets to your hand.) in Defense Position. I end my turn."
"I draw!" Zane said. "I summon another Proto-Cyber Dragon in Attack Position and play Polymerization to fuse Cyber Dragon and Proto-Cyber Dragon into Cyber Twin Dragon (LIGHT, Level 8, 2800 ATK, 2100 DEF, Machine/Effect – "Cyber Dragon" + "Cyber Dragon" – A Fusion Summon of this card can only be done with the above Fusion Materials. This card can make a second attack during each Battle Phase.) in Attack Position. Cyber Twin Dragon, attack Elemental HERO Thunder Giant."
"I activate Negate Attack (Counter Trap – When an opponent's monster declares an attack: Target the attacking monster; negate the attack, then end the Battle Phase.)!" Jaden replied.
Zane decided that Cyber Barrier Dragon's effect wasn't worth keeping it in Attack Position. "I switch Cyber Barrier Dragon into Defense Position and end my turn."
"My draw." Jaden said as he drew a card. "I play Pot of Greed." He drew 2 cards. Upon inspecting them, he discarded one. "I discard one card to trigger Elemental HERO Thunder Giant's effect and I use it to destroy Cyber Barrier Dragon!"
Zane was unfazed by it. "So what? None of your monsters is powerful enough to defeat my Cyber Twin Dragon."
"Not until I play Skyscraper (Field Spell – If an "Elemental HERO" monster attacks a monster that has a higher ATK, the attacking monster gains 1000 ATK during damage calculation only.)!" Jaden triumphantly replied. "I now switch Wroughtweiler into Attack Position. Elemental HERO Thunder Giant, attack Cyber Twin Dragon!" Thunder Giant's ATK increased from 2400 to 3400 during damage calculation and Zane lost Cyber Twin Dragon and 600 Life Points.
Jaden 2000 LP – Zane 1900 LP
"Wroughtweiler, attack Zane's Life Points directly!" Jaden said.
Jaden 2000 LP – Zane 1100 LP
"I end my turn." Jaden declared.
Zane drew a card. "I play Pot of Greed." He drew two cards. "I Special Summon another Cyber Dragon. Cyber Dragon, attack Wroughtweiler!" Jaden lost Wroughtweiler and 1300 Life Points.
Zane 1100 LP – Jaden 700 LP
"I use Wroughtweiler's effect to bring back Polymerization and Elemental HERO Burstinatrix!" Jaden declared, reminding Zane of the first monster he summoned.
'Oh, no!' Zane thought in horror. 'I forgot about that monster. Well, there's hoping he won't know how to use her. And that pigs fly.' "I set a face down card and end my turn."
Jaden drew a card and Zane reacted by saying "I play Gravity Bind (Continuous Trap – Level 4 or higher monsters cannot attack.)!"
"I send a card from my hand to the Graveyard to trigger Elemental HERO Thunder Giant." Jaden declared. "Destroy Cyber Dragon! Now I summon Elemental HERO Burstinatrix in Attack Position. Elemental HERO Burstinatrix, attack Zane's Life Points directly!"
Jaden 700 LP – Zane 0 LP
"Congratulations, Jaden." Zane said. "You showed me I must improve in order to become a pro duelist."
"You've got a good game, Zane." Jaden replied. "See you at the professional dueling circuit after I graduate."
"I didn't know Wroughtweiler's effect could be used on an Elemental HERO not used as a material for a fusion summon." Syrus commented as he approached the two duelists.
"The text just says "Polymerization" and an "Elemental HERO", Syrus." Jaden explained. "There's nothing saying the Elemental HERO must be one previously used in the duel as a fusion material."
