Trigger Warning: This story contains mentions of assault of various natures, if that is triggering for any of you, you may not want to read any further.

AT THE LAB:

It was quiet, too quiet for New York City. To civilians in the City That Never Sleeps, it seemed like a normal day. However, for the NYPD, it was far from normal. It was like all the criminals in the city were taking a vacation on the same day. That didn't mean the NYPD got to relax though, if anyone were to walk into the station they would see the city's finest hard at work.

"Ha! Take that!" Flack cried jovially as he tossed another paper ball across the room at his target.

Danny ducked behind a desk to avoid the shot before firing off his own paper ball.

"Man, with aim like that how did you ever pass your firearms qualification?" Flack laughed, dodging the ball.

"Funny, I was about to ask you the same thing!"

Flack fired off another ball and Danny once again managed to duck out of the way before it hit him. Unfortunately, this time when he ducked the ball found a different target and hit Stella directly in the face as she entered the station.

"Hey! Guys!" Stella called, holding the ball up and raising an eyebrow, "Seriously?"

"Sorry Stella," Flack said, trying to stifle his laughter, "Danny and I were just… uh…"

"I see you're both hard at work," Stella said, rolling her eyes before turning to face Danny. "I heard you needed to speak with me?"

"Uh yeah," Danny said, shifting from foot to foot, suddenly seeming nervous, "Actually, I need to talk to both of you, I just got a little… distracted… before, you know?" He held up the paper ball still in his hand and Stella rolled her eyes again.

"What's up man?" Flack asked, sitting down. Stella took the seat next to him and Danny sat across from them both.

"I wanted to talk to you guys about Lindsay," Danny said and Stella and Flack exchanged looks.

"Is everything okay with you guys?" Stella asked him and Danny nodded.

"Yeah, yeah, everything's fine. Better than fine, actually… I'm actually planning on proposing to her."

"Danny that's great!" Stella exclaimed.

"Yeah man, that's awesome! When were you thinking of asking her?" Flack asked him.

"I was thinking this weekend," Danny said, wringing his hands. "We've got dinner reservations and I was thinking we could go for a walk by the water after… So you guys think this is a good idea?"

"Of course it is!" Stella said, "Why wouldn't we?"

"I didn't know if we were going too fast or anything…" Danny said, still looking nervous.

"Nah Danny, you guys are the most solid, stable couple I've seen, which is really impressive when you consider you're 50% of that couple," Flack said, laughing at the look his best friend shot him. "You got a ring yet?"

"Yeah, Mac's holding it in his office for me," Danny told them, "It was the one place I knew she'd never find it."

"I think this is great man," Flack told him.

"Me too Danny, we're both really happy for you," Stella agreed. "Our little boy is all grown up."

"Ha ha," Danny shook his head, though he was smiling.

"Hey!"

The three turned and saw Mac standing there.

"I know what you three are talking about," he said, smiling, "But we've got a case. Lindsay, Adam, and Hawkes are already at the scene, we're going to meet them there."

They grabbed their forensic kits and headed out to the car, heading off to the scene. Turns out, not all the criminals were taking a vacation.

AT THE CRIME SCENE:

"Vic is Lexi Madison, 21, from Chicago. Her clothes were removed and there is evidence of assault; she's got stab wounds to her abdomen, looks like she bled out." Hawkes told Lindsay and Adam.

"Poor girl," Lindsay crouched down, looking at the girl's face. "She was just visiting New York, on business or vacation, and this happened."

"You okay?" Adam asked her, touching her shoulder and Lindsay stood up straight again.

"Yeah, I'm fine," she said, trying to shake the image of her friends back in Bozeman out of her head.

Lindsay noticed the two men staring at her.

"Really you guys, I'm fine," she insisted, ignoring the way Hawkes and Adam looked at each other before they returned to processing the scene.

"What have we got?"

The three looked up and saw Mac, Stella, Danny, and Flack walking up, kits in hand.

Hawkes reeled off the vic's information again, as the others started evaluating the environment Lexi Madison had been found in.

Ring ring ring

"Taylor," Mac said, answering his phone and stepping away from the others. When he hung up he turned back to his team.

"We've got another crime scene," Mac told them, "Danny, Lindsay, you two are with me."

The pair followed after their boss, climbing into the car and heading off to the new scene.

None of them knew that what they found there would impact them in ways they could never imagine.

CRIME SCENE #2:

Mac, Danny, and Lindsay pulled up to the new scene twenty minutes later and walked over with their kits.

"What have we got?" Mac asked the officer in charge.

"Victim's name is Lily Manning, 23. She's got stab wounds to her abdomen and it looks like a possible sexual assault too."

Lindsay looked at Danny and Mac and knew they were thinking the same thing she was.

"This is the same M.O. as the victim we just left," she said, "You guys don't think…"

"I think," Mac said, "It's too early to make any assumptions." Though as he said it, Danny and Lindsay could tell he was worried about the obvious connections too.

As they began processing the scene, Danny's phone rang.

"Messer," he paused to listen to whoever was on the other end. "You're kidding right? Yeah, sounds like the vic we've got here too. Alright Flack, we'll see you guys back at the lab."

He hung up and turned back to Mac and Lindsay.

"Apparently just after we left, Stella and Flack got called to another scene. Female victim, 24, Lyla Millegan. Flack said it looked like sexual assault and it looks like she bled out from stab wounds to her abdomen. I don't think it's too early to make assumptions now Mac, it looks like we've got a serial."

"A quick moving serial at that," Mac said, shaking his head. "Let's finish up here so we can get the body back to the lab and have Sid give us a more definitive timeline."

They processed the scene thoroughly, digging extra deep to ensure they didn't miss a single connection between their three victims.

By the time they made it back to the lab, Stella, Flack, Adam, and Hawkes were gathered around the conference table discussing the connections they had found.

As Mac, Danny, and Lindsay joined them, Danny grew more and more worried as he thought about a connection he really didn't want to make.

"What are you thinking Danny?" Stella asked him, noticing the look on his face.

"All three of these vics have shoulder length brown hair, are in their early twenties, and are female," he said slowly. They all stared at him, waiting for him to continue and explain why he was telling them things they already knew.

"And…?" Flack said eventually when Danny didn't continue.

"And…" Danny said slowly, "And they all have the initials L.M."

The rest of the team took in what he said and slowly turned to look at Lindsay, their expressions matching the worried one Danny wore.

"Alright, I don't want anyone panicking," Mac said firmly, though he too was concerned. "Until we know more, I don't want anyone jumping to conclusions. However, we are going to take extra precautions which means, Lindsay, I don't want you going anywhere by yourself until this guy is caught, understand?"

Lindsay nodded, trying to not to show how worried she was. She looked to her left when she felt someone take her hand and smiled at Danny. He wasn't planning on letting her out of his sight until this was over.

The team went to their respective stations, all of them planning to work relentlessly until they caught the guy who was doing this.

"Hey, Montana," Danny pulled Lindsay back to him when she went to head to her station. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you, you know that right?"

Lindsay nodded her head and leaned her forehead against his for a moment before she squeezed his hand and went back to work, determined to finish this before anyone else got hurt.

How's quarantine treating everyone? I hope you're all staying safe and healthy indoors.

This was one of the first fanfics I ever wrote and I wrote it over a decade ago. I was 12 at the time and since then my writing style has changed dramatically, as has my understanding of how grammar works.

Reading through it I realized a lot of things didn't make sense, weren't realistic, or were super cringy. So I'm rewriting it and really have no idea how much will change or stay the same. So far, with everything I changed in this first chapter, the general plot will stay the same, but basically everything else is going to change.

I'm going to be working on the rest of the chapters in the coming days and hope to have them uploaded soon.

Stay safe everyone!
