Runaways
Chapter One - Nightmares and Hallucinations
GASP.
Caroline woke up in her bed in haste, drenched in sweat. She had that nightmare again. The wretched nightmare where she had killed her beloved brother. His own beloved brother.
But this was worse; much worse. This time, he had completed his yearned revenge. He had staked straight through the heart and watched gleefully as she died, sobbing. All this because of a horrid mistake she made a thousand years ago.
Caroline couldn't fall asleep again.
At least not after her brother's face haunted her- as her last memory of him replayed over and over again. His bloody face, eyes wide open and stuck with fright as she carried him home, sobbing for her Mother figure to come and take a look at her youngest son. She would never forget the look on his face as he looked down at his beloved brother that he had doted on- now dead and gone. All her fault.
Shivering to herself with a racking sob, Caroline mutters sweet nothings to herself before deciding to drink some milk and eat a midnight snack along with it. She hopped down the stairs rhythmically to her empty kitchen. Everything was practically packed into the surrounding boxes but she had some food leftover in the fridge for her last stay. After picking out a milk carton from the almost empty fridge, Caroline heard a voice- leaving her frozen solid where she stood in front of the fridge.
"Caroline."
Caroline dropped the milk carton in fear, feelings it spill around her feet yet she couldn't find herself caring at the moment.
For the voice had sounded like him.
Him as in her ex-boyfriend; as in one of the most powerful supernatural beings on this Earth; as in the man who wanted to slaughter her profoundly. Caroline- coming to her earthly senses- whipped her head around the room, eyes wide, to find the source of the voice.
"W-who's there?" Her voice shook as it echoed around the empty room. She feared the answer. She knew it was him. She knew it by the torrid goosebumps on her arms. And they most certainly weren't caused by the open fridge door.
With no reply and only silence, Caroline sighed and admitted defeat to her lack of sleep causing her to hear things and hallucinate. She looked down and finally realized how the milk had splattered all over the kitchen floor and had gotten on some of the appliances that sat on the counter- waiting to be boxed away.
Shit. This is going to take a while. She thought as she let out a shaky sigh and went to get her cleaning supplies.
After cleaning her mess up, she ran a hand though her long locks of blonde hair and decided she to try and get some more sleep. After all, she had a plane ride to catch in the morning. And she definitely did not want to oversleep.
