The Odd Ball Out
Driving with a winter spirit in your car was hard—if not impossible—in the winter.
You, the odd ball human, needed warmth. So you would turn on the heat and direct it so it would wrap you in its warmth. Well of course this was too hot for a spirit of ice and snow and so he would lower the window and allow cold air to rush in and snatch away any heat you were enjoying. To combat this, you would increase the heat. Countering this, the winter spirit would further roll down the window. This continued until the winter spirit was all but hanging out the window and you were shivering in your seat as the heat your car was desperately trying to pump out was whisked away.
"For the love of all that's good, would you please just get out?!" Amber snapped at her friend for what felt like the umpteenth time. "You're already halfway out the window, why don't you just fly beside me or meet me there?" Jack was sitting on the ledge of her car; staff balanced so it lay against the car seat but still was within his grasp. His upper body was outside the car while his feet were propped against the edge of the seat. He twisted his head to look back in the car.
"Why, do you want to get rid of me?" He questioned with mock hurt on his face. A smirk then graced his features. "I thought you liked the cold~?"
"I like the cold in small spurts. Not when it's stealing my poor car's heat and seeping into my bones. You're freezing my face off, man!" She shivered again to prove her point.
"Can tell you want to be a writer… Well do you really need the heat on full blast?"
"When you roll down the window all the way, yes!"
"Ok, fine. Let's compromise." He slid back into her car, pushing the vent away from him with a grimace. "We can put this window up and then we can do these windows instead, that way it'll only hit me! Maybe!"
"What are you talking about, other windows?" She gave a yelp as a staff shot past her to push at the window buttons beside her. With it whacking around it lowered all the other windows and at the same time nearly made her lose control of the car. "Jack! God, you jerk! It's colder now and we nearly died! Not really… but still!" Jack merely snickered at her angry rant, pulling his staff back to him. He had meant to only lower the windows near her and expected that the cold air would steer around her seat and reach him rather than her. Though seeing her flustered was always amusing.
He glanced at her as the car came to a stop at the light. She had a tight grip on the wheel and he could see that her fingers were trembling slightly as the cold breezes nipped at her skin. He frowned faintly as his fingers traced his staff. It was moments like these that he remembered what he was and how that affected the humans around him. With a faint sigh he glanced at the bus in front of them.
"The kids are waving again." They had been following behind the bus since they left the school. Jack had followed along with her, eager to see her in action before she graduated from college and being around kids was always a plus too. At every stop the children in the back would gather around the windows and eagerly wave at her and those around them. Amber would usually wave back to which they would excitedly respond but this time she stayed still.
"My hands are frozen to my wheel thanks to someone." She said with a critical glare. He responded with a smile as usual.
"Well I'll just take your place then." So he waved back in her stead. However he was shocked to see them all start babbling excitedly in the bus and happily wave even more. "Amber… do they see me?" She blinked, having seen the scene as well. She tilted his head at him and offered his excited face a grin.
"Seems so, Jackie." His grin widened and he hopped out the window without a second thought, the wind snatching him up as he went to the bus's side. Amber paused before she gave a wild grin and started to roll up all the windows. She gave a blissful sigh as the heat began to cascade upon her again.
"Hey!" She gasped as he shot back in right as she was about to close that window as well. He grinned devilishly at her as his icy presence swept her heat away once again.
"Seriously?!" He laughed as he climbed in fully, leaning his staff on the seat again.
"Aw, I can tell you missed me. Hey, I thought of a way to compromise while I was making frost for the kids!" Amber frowned at him and had to tear her gaze away so she could focus on driving forward. She heard him climb back past her and had to jerk to the side to avoid his foot slapping her in the face. The window in the back was lowered and giving a quick glance back she could see he was sitting as he had before in the front halfway hanging out. He offered her a grin. "Now you won't be as cold, I won't feel too much heat, and we can still talk! I mean, that is one of the reasons I came with you."
Amber was quiet as she let his words sink in, rolling the front window up again to allow the heat to surround her. A warm smile slowly made its way across her face as the winter spirit began to chat animatedly behind her.
Maybe driving with a winter spirit wasn't so bad.
A/N: I like these two. But you ever drive in the winter and someone in your car is too hot and rolls down the window and then a battle of hot and cold commences? If not, be glad. Because it's annoying as crap.
Until we meet again~
