Chapter 7: In Your Arms

Lying in bed next to Edward felt amazing. It had only been two days, but it was almost like I now relied on him in order to sleep. The coolness of his body met my hot wolf temperature and it calmed me. Even Nicky seemed to enjoy Edward's cooler than normal temperature. I cuddled further into Edward's chest, enjoying his scent. For some reason, Edward didn't smell like a normal vampire, he smelled forest-y with a slight sweetness. Kind of like what Axe tries to replicate.
Edward tightened his arms around me. It was about eleven at night, and we were just lying in bed, not talking or watching tv, but just enjoying each other's embrace. Under the covers, our legs tangled around each other's. We were pressed against each other, wanting to be as close as possible.
The topic of sex hadn't come up, yet. I felt like we were going to need to talk about it soon, especially after this morning, but I didn't know how to broach it with Edward. I wasn't sure if I was ready for sex, being conflicted. Edward and I had only met two days ago, and while our feelings for each other stood very strong, it seemed to fast. The question about fertility also plagued my mind. For some reason, I could have a baby as a wolf, even though Leah could not. That was how Nicky came about. Jacob and I didn't know that we needed protection. I had also heard stories of vampire men getting human females pregnant, and I wondered how that would play out for us. A half-wolf half-vampire child would be very interesting. We already knew that when Nicky came of age he would phase. Especially with Edward as my mate.
"Penny for your thoughts, love?" Edward's voice broke through my inner thoughts. I blushed.
"I was thinking about sex." I said. As soon as it came out of my mouth I finished, "I was just curious what your feelings were on it and if we would have to worry about protection." Edward's eyes widened.
"Well… I want you, but I'm not sure if we're ready for that step. Maybe we should ease into it." He said, then almost inaudibly loud and quickly he said, "I'm a virgin." If it weren't for my wolf senses I wouldn't have heard it. Edward looked away from me, focusing on a spot behind me. I kissed him, trying to show my love for him.
"We both know that I'm not a virgin." I joked, "as much as I don't like Jacob right now, Nicky wasn't an immaculate conception" I paused. "I'm not supposed to be able to have children. Nicky wasn't supposed to be possible. When a wolf phases, they stop growing; for a female wolf this is supposed to mean that they also can't become pregnant. For some reason though, I can. And I've heard the stories of a male vampire impregnating a female human."
Edward brushed a hair that had fallen out of my face.
"I wouldn't mind having a child with you. If it's possible. If it's not, well, I already think of Nicky as my own. If you would have me, I would love to help you raise him and be a father-figure in his life." I smiled at him.
"I feel the same way." Cuddling further into his cool body I sighed. "I'm tired. Good night, my Edward."
"Sweet dreams, my Bella" he replied. I felt him kiss my head before I drifted off.

The next morning the real world hit me. Awoken by my alarm at six in the morning, I groaned. Edward beside me shifted,
"Good morning love"
"Ugh, I hate early mornings" Edward chuckled. I rolled over to my bedside table and unplugged my phone, checking for messages. I had an email from Sue Clearwater, who usually watched Nicky for me when I had patrols or work. Opening it I sighed as she explained that she had a family emergency and wouldn't be able to take Nicky today.
"What's wrong?"
"I need to find someone to watch Nicky. I have border patrol at seven and then I have to open the bookstore at nine. I work until six, and then Marie will take over. Sue Clearwater, who usually watches Nicky can't today."
"I can watch him, that is, if you're okay with it." I looked up at him,
"Really? I don't want to impose. I can install the base of his car seat into your car and give you the spare key to my house so that you could stay here or go if needed."
"That sounds good, or I could take your car so that you don't have to switch the base out. You could drive my Volvo." I looked at him shocked. When he had given me a tour of his house, Edward had mentioned that he didn't allow anyone to drive his cars. The Volvo and his prize: an Aston Martin Vanquish.
"Thank you, Edward" Almost tearing up at how much this man means to me. I slowly rose from bed, and after brushing my teeth, I gave Edward a good-morning kiss. I dressed in shorts and a tank top, but threw a change of clothes for work into my bag. Moving into the kitchen I started making myself breakfast.
As the eggs, bacon, sausage, and hash browns cooked, Edward and I talked.
"Nicky probably won't be awake until eight. The baby bag is in his room along with anything that you might need for him. He is teething, so he has some frozen teething rings in the freezer. Other than that, if you need me just call. He is eating soft foods right now, and I made up some baby food a few days ago that's in the fridge. In the cabinet there's a shelf dedicated to baby foods. I'll try to be back by six-thirty at the latest." Edward smiled at me.
"Alright. I think I've got it. Here's the keys to the Volvo." Edward handed me his car keys. I handed him my keys.
"This one is the car key, obviously." I pointed to the key with the Ford logo. "and this is the house key" Edward laughed.
"Really the one with the house key topper, I never would have guessed!" he said cheekily. I removed the bookstore key (which yes, has a bookshelf image on the key topper) and attached it to Edward's keys for safe keeping. I also attached the spare house key that I usually kept in the junk drawer.
"You can keep my house key." I smiled up at Edward. He reached down and cupped my chin, bringing it to his face. He lightly kissed my lips.
"Thank you" Piling my food on my plate, I quickly ate.
"I have to get going." I reluctantly said. I gave Edward a kiss and he grinned his crooked grin at me. "Thank you for taking care of Nicky. I love you."
"It's my pleasure Bella. I love you too, stay safe." He replied.
"I will." I promised. Then, I left. Getting in Edward's car I drove to the border. The entire patrol all I could think about was wanting to get back to my son and to Edward's loving embrace.
