Beep!
Beep!
Beep!
Evelynn groaned and flopped her arm around, trying to hit the 'dismiss' on her alarm clock. Failing to do so, she sat up and rubbed her eyes. Evelynn yawned and turned off the alarm clock. She stared at it a bit, nervous about the day.
God, there was just too much that could go wrong.
America could find out about how Evelynn was bringing Katie, Washington D.C., and Lucas, Maryland, to her world and hurt them.
Katie and Lucas could just decide not to come.
Alex could be hurt in the meantime, making the entire thing useless.
Sighing, Evelynn ran her hand through her hair. She need to get up and talk to Alex. As her eyes grew accustomed to the darkness of her second-story bedroom, she spotted her cell phone on the wooden floor. She groaned. She must have thrown it on the floor in her sleep. It wouldn't have been the first time.
Evelynn placed her feet on the cool floor beside her queen-sized bed. Frederick, her poodle, raised his head from his bed in a small opening in the corner of the room. Anne-Sophie, her cat, slept cuddled into a stuffed bunny. Narrowing her eyes, Evelynn picked up her phone and walked over to Anne-Sophie and Frederick. Frederick's tale began to wag slowly, but as he saw that his mistress's eyes were fixed on the cat, he put his down back down and went back to sleep. Anne-Sophie looked up at Evelynn and meowed softly, flicking her tail back and forth. Evelynn placed her hands on her hips. "Give me Bernard." The cat snuggled closer into the rabbit. Evelynn just grabbed the rabbit from Anne-Sophie and hugged it close.
"Everyone has something close to them," Alex insisted. "Whether it's a person or an object, everyone has something that comforts them."
Evelynn snorted. "Not countries."
Alex smiled softly. "Are you sure?"
"Is this some sort of interrogation?" Evelynn jokingly questioned him. She grinned slightly as she mock-glared at her friend.
"Let's pretend it is," said Alex. "What do you have that's close to you?"
"I have-" Evelynn blinked a few times. What did she have? "I have Anne-Sophie and Frederick. They love me and I love them." She jumped down from her spot on the counter of the kitchen in the tiny three-room house to walk over to the table where Alex sat with a bottle of water. "What do you have?"
"I have hope," replied Alex.
Evelynn laughed. Alex frowned, "Hey. I'm being serious."
"How can anyone have hope now?" Evelynn questioned him.
"Well I think it varies from person to person," Alex grinned at Evelynn. "Or personification to personification." Evelynn rolled her eyes. Alex cleared his throat. "Anyway, my hope is life itself."
"Care to elaborate?"
"Well, c'mon Evelynn, think about it. Life has survived so long. Sure, the human-race has made a lot of mistakes, but we're alive, and that's amazing!" Alex took a drink from his water bottle.
Evelynn sat down next to him, smile gone. "But life ends," she pointed out. "It ends so suddenly. Life is just so fragile."
Alex laughed. "This is coming from someone who's centuries old."
"But really," Evelynn persisted. "How can the promise of something so fleeting give you hope?"
Alex shrugged. There was a small silence between the two, with the only sounds coming from outside. "I have another hope." Alex said quietly.
"What's that?" Evelynn asked.
"You."
"Wha-"
Alex looked at Evelynn, who's eyes were widened in surprise behind her glasses. "You, who has so much power over people and who can basically get nearly anything she wants actually spends time helping people. It's amazing. You're amazing."
"I-I.. What?" Evelynn shook her head. Was Alex feeling okay? Evelynn closed her eyes and put her head in her hands. She felt something soft and light leaning against her. When she lifted her head, a faded purple stuffed rabbit smiled up at her.
