Chapter 1

~Ashe's POV~

Officer Caitlyn spun around in her twirly chair, facing me. "The dark forces have to be stopped!" she hissed angrily. "Now, will you join the mission?"

I looked back at her, Caitlyn, my good friend. Now she had so much power, and I'd hate to see what would happen to me if I denied her. I nodded silently, without saying a word.

Caitlyn nodded approvingly, smiling. "That's what I like to hear."

"But I didn't even say anything," I protested.

"Shut up!" Caitlyn replied teasingly, the same sparkle in her eye as when we were kids.

"Wait, but Caitlyn, you're not joining the mission?"

Caitlyn shrugged. "Nah, I'm good. Anyways, you'll be meeting up with some of the other branches of defending groups later. I think you'll have enough forces to defeat the evil by yourself!" Caitlyn declared confidently.

There was that old Caitlyn, the one who thought, who knew, she was always right. "Alright, but you know, isn't there something, you know, more to why you're not going? You never turn down a mission," I replied, slightly hinting her that I knew the real reason.

"Shut up."

"Why don't you ask him to come on the mission? He's a good fighter."

"Because…" Caitlyn didn't have a good answer, or at least, one that wouldn't give her away.

I grinned, knowing I had defeated her.

Caitlyn sighed. "I guess I'll tell him to come too."

"Good."

Caitlyn sighed again. "You know Ashe, he really did steal my heart when we met," she whispered.

I patted her shoulder comfortingly. "Yes, I know, and I'm sure you stole his too. Now I have to run. Go talk to him about it, okay? Please?"

Caitlyn shrugged. "I guess."

"See you later, Cait." I winked at her before walking out of the office, leaving my best friend sitting in her chair, watching me go out the door.

~Caitlyn's POV~

I don't want to do this. But I know Ashe will say something to everyone about us if I don't. I guess it'll be better if I do. But he's risking his life in battle, I thought, wanting to kick myself for dragging myself into this as I walked slowly to his dorm, dragging my rifle behind me in the dust.

"Caitlyn?" his deep voice asked with a questioning tone, confused.

"It's awful," I cried, falling onto my knees.

"What happened?" he murmured, kneeling down next to me.

I explained the whole story, sobbing still.

He looked at me grimly. "Well then, I'll just have to go."

"But you're risking your life!" I exclaimed in disbelief, my cheeks still wet with tears.

"So is everyone else you're sending on this mission. Ashe is going, isn't she?"

Without a word, I nodded.

"Well then, you should let me go. Besides, I won't die. I have a reason for coming back, hm?" He nudged me, a smile playing around his lips.

"I guess…"

"But that doesn't mean I won't miss you, sweetie." His blond hair ruffled in the wind as he spoke.

I looked up at him, my eyes tearing up again, threatening me for another round of crying.

But before one tear could fall, he embraced me tightly right there on the doorstep, pressing his lips against mine forcefully.

His lips are so soft. I closed my eyes and savored my last moment with him.
