John's POV
Weeks passed. Sherlock was never ambushed by Moriarty again in the mornings, or after school. I would usually stay with him all day, before and after school, during lunch and after school. We also had a few classes together, Technology, Chemistry, and English. It didn't come as a surprise to me when I found out that he excelled at English and Technology, but he was uncanningly talented at Chemistry.
"Sherlock, honestly," I said to him once after he completed a solution that required 5 weeks in 5 minutes. Everyone was giving him a sideways glance and none too positive at that. I gave them all pointed looks, and they looked away. Sherlock didn't appear to notice, as he was studying a specimen intently under a microscope.
"Chemistry," he told me once during one of our quiet lunches that we often shared together "is one of the least boring subjects that I have ever taken." I sighed, spreading my jam over my scone. I had skipped breakfast that morning due to one of Harry's hangovers, and frankly was starving.
"Don't you ever eat lunch, Sherlock?" I said, looking at him. He was tearing apart his tuna sandwich and throwing them at the birds. "Lunch is boring, John," he said as he tore apart the last piece of his sandwich and reached for a cigarette. I rolled my eyes, scooting a bit farther away from him as he lit it.
Sherlock was a strange character. One day after school I was walking home with Sarah, who appeared to like me, when suddenly Sarah pointed out "I think we're being followed, John." I turned around, seeing Sherlock there half-hiding behind a tree.
I groaned, walking over and pulling him out from his sleeve. "Sherlock, could you please not follow me?" He frowned, glancing at Sarah before nodding and walking away as if he hadn't been caught practically stalking me.
Later on though, I could feel eyes burning into the back of my head, and I sighed.
Sherlock wasn't a likable person. He was crabby, sarcastic, insulting most of the time, and frankly dangerous to be around. But I stuck with him. Why? Because though Sherlock had a lot of faults, he was my best friend, and I could tell that I was his, possibly his only friend at that.
"Sherlock," I asked him one day "don't you have any other friends? I mean, I usually see you alone." Sherlock scoffed. "Friends, no. Acquaintances, perhaps. There's Greg, Molly, and Mrs. Hudson." "The Home Ec teacher?" I asked incredulously. I couldn't imagine how they had come to know each other, Mrs. Hudson was one of the kindest and nicest teachers in the entire school. Sherlock nodded. "I did a favor for her some time ago, and she happens to own a small portion of flats where I currently reside." I nodded. So that was that.
We were walking back to my flat one day when Sherlock suddenly asked me, out of the blue, if I minded the sound of the violin. "Why no," I said "Why?" "Would you like to move into the flat with me John?" he asked. I looked up at him in surprise. He looked down at me, his eyebrows slightly raised in question. "Well obviously you can't keep living like this, with Harry. You hardly ever get enough sleep and your grades are steadily decreasing due to her distraction. I think it'd be best if you move into 221B Baker Street with me."
I just kept looking at him. He sighed. "We obviously wouldn't be sharing a bedroom if that's-" "No!" I said "That's not it, it's just…really? Are you sure I wouldn't be a bother?" He shrugged. "Why would you be? It's more likely that I would be a bother to you," he said. I thought about it, as we continued walking. Finally, as I opened the door to my flat I turned around and said "I'll be there Sunday, if that's all right with you?" Sherlock nodded. "See you Sunday," he said, and just before he turned around completely I saw his face curve up in a small smile.
