I blinked awake the next morning to a knock on the door. It was so quiet, or maybe it was because he was so tired, but Fang didn't even stir. I smiled and lightly touched his cheek.
I jolted upright to see Sean standing in the doorway. I didn't answer him, I just waited to hear what he had to say.
"Tony is being discharged today, and we need to discuss your living arrangements." he said calmly. My heart sunk like a stone. It will probably be another foster home, meaning we will probably be separated again.
"Don't call me Tony." said Fang from beside me in his scratchy morning voice. When I looked back at him he was awake and looking right at Sean with a blank expression.
"Right, sorry." Sean corrected, settling down into the chair beside the bed. "Now, the most likely scenario right now is you two being put into foster care. I know you don't want to be separated, but there doesn't seem to be any other choice right now."
I opened my mouth to snap back that he had better find one, just as another person strode confidently into the room, head held high. My jaw dropped.
"Hello Max." she said with a loving smile. Her curly hair was groomed and nice, and she was once again in a nice suit with heels, briefcase in hand. She turned to Sean and held out her manicured hand. "Hello. My name is Valencia Martinez, previously Valencia Batchelder. I am Maxs mother."
Sean stood to shake her hand and remained standing.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, Ms. Martinez," he said, "But didn't you and your husband disown Ms. Ride?" Valencia gave him another smile.
"That is correct. However, I have recently filed for divorce from my husband and am in the process of reversing the disownment. Also, I have filed for custody of my daughter and would also like to apply for the custody of her boyfriend, Tony, since he has no family to claim him."
If this was a cartoon, my eyes would have popped out of my head and be rolling across the floor right now, such was my shock.
I felt Fang sit up behind me and turned to see him giving me a surprised look. I looked back at Valencia.
"When did all of this happen? I thought you were afraid of Jeb." She smiled at me understandingly.
"I was. Until your friends kicked me out of the house." I blinked. I wasn't aware they had done that. "After that, I realized I couldn't let him rule my life anymore. I decided I was done cowering. So I stood up, and I said no." Her smile was proud now, and rightfully so. I couldn't help the smile that grew onto my lips.
"I'm proud of you, Mom." I said.
Her mouth opened slightly with surprise. I don't think I have called her Mom once in my entire life. I looked at Sean.
"Do you think that would work?" I asked him, hoping against hope that he would say yes.
"I think so." he said. "There will be some legal stuff to work out before it's permanent, but you can stay with her until then."
"Are you sure you're ok with this Max?" Valencia asked, looking concerned. "I know our relationship isn't the best, and-"
"I'm sure. I think I'm finally ready to try again with you." I said with a smile. I turned around and draped my arms around Fangs neck. "What do you think? Do you agree?" Fang smiled and pressed out foreheads together.
"As long as I'm with you, I don't care." he whispered. I grinned at him, and he grinned back. I looked over my shoulder at a beaming Valencia.
"Hey Mom?" the word would get some taking used to, but I think I can do it. No, I know I can do it. It's time for my fresh start.
"Yes Max?" the tone in her voice said she would never get tired of hearing that word cross my lips.
"Can we go visit Nudge and Iggy?" Her smile grew a little bit more.
"Of course, my dear."
