Anna's POV

"Ya know Dorry, I really have no idea what's going on."

"What do you mean you don't know what's going on?" She looked at me confused.

"I mean, ugh, I don't know! I was just thinking about relationships and shit and I just- I want what you and Dar have! You guys are like the perfect couple and I want something like that!"

She smiled slightly and looked at one of the many instant photos of her and Darry scattered around her room. "Well why can't you have that with Dally?"

I sighed, "Dally's awesome and all, but we really don't get along. Like at all. We're just a casual sex type of thing."

"Anna, that guy likes you! I've seen the way he looks at you. Just give him a chance!"

"There's no way he likes me! He can't stand me! When we're not rough-housing in the sac, we're at each others throats! I know he said he was gonna try to be better, but I don't think it's gonna work out with him. He's not the relationship type of guy." I complained.

"Maybe he could be if you let him!" She encouraged.

"Look at you and Darry. You guys can get through everything. That tramp tried to steal your man, and you worked through it! Dal and I can't even look at each other without arguing!"

"Stop complaining! Stop wishing you had the perfect relationship and go have a relationship! Or can you not get passed the whole Brand thing?" She eyed me cautiously.

"What that douche bag did to me has nothing to do with this!"

"Well maybe he's the reason you can't hold a relationship for more than a week!" She spat at me.

My eyes narrowed. "I'll show you who can be in a relationship!" I stormed out of her room and slammed the door. I heard her yelling my name but I caught a glimpse of a dark haired boy sauntering down the path in front of the cabins. I quickly walked towards him and I vaguely saw Dorry come out of her room.

I grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and pulled his face down to mine. "Make-out with me. Now." I breathed into his mouth before pressing our lips together. I felt him smile into my mouth and his hands made themselves comfortable on my waist.

If Dorry was following me, and I knew she was, I was gonna have to get this kiss really raunchy, really quick. I was gonna show her that I could be in a relationship for more than a week.

I ungracefully backed Dally and I up against a wall of someones cabin and jumped up and wrapped my legs around his waist. His hands were still on my waist and I moved them so they were on my butt. He looked pleasantly surprised and I locked my fingers in his hair and smashed our mouths together again- going straight to the tongue.

I heard Dorry walk up and make a disgusted noise. I didn't look and she scoffed and walked back towards her room.

When she was safely out of sight, I pulled away from Dally and got my feet back on solid ground.

He gave me his trademark grin, "What was that all about?" He asked, and put a hand on the wall on either side of my head.

"I need you to do something for me." I smiled sweetly at him.

"Anything for you, Sweet Cheeks."

I twirled a piece of my hair around my finger, "I need you to be my boyfriend."

He cupped my face in one of his huge hands and gave me another dazzling smile, "Sure thing, babe."

I jumped excitedly, "Great! It should only be for a month tops." He looked confused. "I just need a pretend boyfriend to prove something."

I looked up at him and saw a glint of something lingering in his eyes. Disappointment? Why would he be disappointed? Did he not want to be seen with me? Was he trying to get some other girl and I was getting in the way of it?

"Hey, look. If you don't want to do it, I totally understand." I ducked under his arm and started towards my room.

He grabbed my hand and spun me around to face him again, "I'll do it."

I smiled, "Great! I'll see you at the party tonight then?" He nodded and I went back to my room and got changed for work.

During the party, Dally and I were all over each other. Not just in the usual way we were all over each other, but holding hands and dancing together. We actually looked like a couple and I could tell people were noticing. I saw my sister smiling at me from across the room and a couple of others were whispering and glancing at Dal and I.

We decided to make our grand exit before everyone else so they would see us leave together. We walked out holding hands and laughing down the path. When we couldn't see the Hangout anymore, I let go of his hand and crossed my arms.

"Why'd you let go?" He asked.

"Well, no one's around. We don't have to be a couple we're alone." I explained.

Over the next couple of days, things went great. We would ham it up when we had shifts together and visit each other on the job when we didn't. We ate our meals together and hung out with Julie. I still wasn't on talking terms with Dorry, but at least I had my sister to talk to about stuff.

Dally always tried to do the couple thing after everyone was gone, and I felt bad for having to be the one to stop it, but I couldn't have him thinking we were in a real relationship.

The next party we went to was a week after our original plan was made. We did the couple act that was becoming more and more normal for us. We left at the same time as everyone else and held hands the way back to my room. There were people all around outside, most people stumbling around looking for their own rooms.

We walked up the couple of stairs and onto my small front porch. Dally faced me and slowly moved closer to where our foreheads were pressed together and the tips of our noses occasionally touched each other. His hand lazily made its way up to my face after bumping my hip and brushing up my inner arm that was hanging limp at my side. He gently pressed his lips against mine and moved them painfully slow. His other hand anchored itself to my hip and his fingers were tracing shapes into my skin. His mouth moved away from mine and he started kissing lightly up my jaw and down my neck to my collarbone. My knees felt week and I tried to stabilize myself by holding onto the railing behind me. I quickly opened my eyes and glanced around at my surroundings. I reached up to touch the back of Dally's neck and he shivered slightly.

"Dal?" I sounded more breathless that I wanted to.

"Hmm?" He mumbled against my skin.

"They're gone." I said quietly.

"I know." He said and kissed the base of my neck again. His hands sprawled out on my sides and made my stomach clench. He pulled me closer to him.

"Dal, I think you should stop."

He sighed and pulled away to look at me, "Why?"

"Why should we do this if there's no one around to see it?"

He suddenly got very angry, "Why does someone have to see it every time we touch each other? Why can't we just do it because it feels good, because it feels right?"

"This feels right to you?" I asked accusingly.

"More than you know." He looked straight into my eyes. "I don't want to pretend to be your boyfriend. I want to be your real boyfriend and I want you to be my real girlfriend."
My breath hitched in my throat and I stuttered out, "No. It won't work. We won't work. No."

"Why? Why won't it work?" He asked angrily.

"We don't get along! We never have! How can we really be together if we can't have one conversation without yelling at each other?"

He laughed darkly, "We don't get along? Have you seen us this week? We have been the pinnacle of a happy couple!"

"But we've been pretending!"

"Have we? Because I sure as hell haven't been! How can you not see that we would be great together?"

I huffed and my eyes started filling up with tears. "How do I know you won't hurt me?" I squeaked out.

He looked almost stunned, "Why would I hurt you?"

"Because every guy I have ever liked has."

"Who hurt you?" He asked softly.

"It's a really long list." It was my turn to laugh darkly

"Let's talk about it inside." He suggested.

"We can't talk in there. Julie's in there."

He moved quickly and threw me over his shoulder. "Then we're going to mine."

Once we were back in his room, he sat me on his bed and sat on his haunches in front of me. "Now spill. I want to know everything."

I patted the space on the bed next to me, "You better get comfortable."

He followed my direction and started at me intently.

I took a deep breath. "It all started when I started going out with this senior, Brand, when I was a freshman. He was the most popular guy in school. Quarterback, homecoming king, he had it all. When he first asked me out, I thought it was all a joke, but then we went out and it was almost magical. He took me sightseeing in our town and showed me all the landmarks and told me all the history behind them and it was really cool. We went out to a fancy diner and he kissed me. He told me he'd had a crush on me all year and that he'd been too nervous to ask me out before. So I did the only logical thing a girl would do when she thought she was out with a guy that was too good for her. I slept with him. On the first date. After that date, he never called me again and started spreading rumors about me and how I was such a slut. He came up to me in the halls and told me it was all a dare but 'thanks for the fun'," I made air quotes, "After that, all the guys in school would try to get close to me. Pretend to be my friend, just because they thought I put out on the first date. The girls in my school wouldn't talk to me because I was such a whore, and the guys would only talk to me to get in my pants. So, I couldn't trust anyone and I didn't have any friends until I met Dorry and I came here."

By the end of it, I was sobbing. Dally took me into his arms and held me there. He kissed the top of my head and wiped my tears away.

"You can trust me." He said.

I sat up and sniffled, "How can I be sure?"

"Look at us!" He laughed softly. "We slept together on the first date, and here I am trying to work things out. I want to be with you. I don't care about your past, all I care about is if we have a future." He had a look of desperation to him.

I slapped his arm gently, "Oh, my God. That was so dorky!"

"So does that mean you'll give it a chance?" He asked hopefully.

"Yeah, I guess." I smiled.

His smile lit up the room.

"Now I need to go home and go to sleep because I am exhausted!" I said.

"It's a long walk, you can just sleep here."

"No funny business?" I asked skeptically.

He looked at me earnestly, "No funny business."

Dally's POV

"Hey Dal!" Anna said excitedly, stretching up to kiss me.

"Hey," I smirked at her, but leaned out of the way to avoid her lips. I kissed her gently on the forehead instead, hoping she would think it was sweet.

"OK?" Anna cleared her throat, trying to get past the awkwardness that had obviously just occurred. "So, what are gonna do today? We both have the morning off!"

"How 'bout we go down to the pond?"

"Sure!" Anna grabbed my hand and pulled me behind her.

It was an okay day so the pond was still and the sun was out. This place was easy, there was no pressure from being in the public eye, it could just be us; I could show her that I'm not like that other guy. I was going to prove to her that I was in this for more than just a few nights in the pool shack.

Anna tugged on my hand a little to get me to sit down next to her.

"So," I started, looking over at her.

"So," she smiled and let go of my hand, running her fingers up and down my arms. Then they traveled to my shoulders, then my chest.

"Anna," I took her hand away and put it back down in the grass. "Wanna go for a swim?"

"Sounds good," she said, obviously disappointed that I had avoided her advances again. She began to take her shirt off, grabbing at the hem.

"No, um, why don't we go back and get our swim suits, OK?"

"Fine," Anna replied, forcing a smile. The walk back to our rooms wasn't quite as nice as the walk there was.

We got to Anna's room and I watched from the doorway as she rummaged through her closet to find the suit. She finally pulled it out and immediately began to undress again. I turned around and went out on the porch to give her some privacy.

"No!" I heard from inside before I could get the door closed. Anna wrenched the door from my hand, yanked me back inside and slammed the door behind me.

"What is up with you today, Dal?" Anna exclaimed, she was only in her jean shorts and a bra.

"Could you, ya know, put on a shirt or somethin'?" I asked, averting my eyes.

"No, no I can't. It's not like you haven't seen me before Dal. And normally you're all over me, or at least cracking dirty jokes or something! This isn't like you."

"Exactly! I'm too much like that damn Brad kid! I'm not gonna be like him, I'm gonna be better for you" I told her, while still looking away.

"Dally, look at me." Anna ordered, coming closer. "Look. At. Me." She insisted.

I turned my head slowly, keeping my eyes on her face.

"Dally, not using me doesn't mean nothing can happen between us ever again, it's what you do afterward that really matters."

"And what happens afterward is what I'm afraid of! I'd rather just be with you like this than mess us up like I did before!" I tried to explain, already feeling my voice beginning to get louder.

"But that's not you! I'd rather have you than some sap that doesn't even know who he really is."

"I'm trying to change for you! I thought that would make you happy. So sorry for that!" I retorted.

"But you're not yourself, I want Dally, not this!" Anna yelled back at me.

"Make up your damn mind!" This was it, we were fighting again.

"I want the guy who doesn't care what other people think. I want the guy who does what he wants when he wants. I want the guy who takes charge, the guy who's confident and goes after what he wants. That's what I want, Dally!"

"I can still be that guy without all the physical stuff!"

"See? Since when do you not want the physical stuff?"

"Since I met you, Anna!" Why couldn't she see that I was doing this for her?

"The physical stuff is part of a relationship! If you're too scared of it now, or whatever, you're just a coward."

"Excuse me?"

"Coward," Anna spat back at me

"No one calls Dallas Winston a coward" I growled.

"And what are you gonna do about it?" Anna asked, challenging me.

I grabbed her arms and yanked her towards me, not caring if I was gentle or sweet anymore. I smashed my lips into hers, putting my hand on the back of her head and pressing as hard as I could. Anna's bra was off in a matter of seconds, her bottoms joining it on the floor shortly after. I threw her on the bed and stripped off my own clothes. I climbed on top of her and put my mouth as close to hers as I could without them touching.

"Call me a coward again." I whispered. My lips came down on hers again before she had a chance to respond.

I looked over at Anna while she slept and couldn't help but smile just a little. Sure it was angry sex, but after the angry sex comes the make-up sex. It was just the first step to being in a relationship, and a fun one at that. So I went about getting on her good side a little wrong, but I could make it up to her right? I should make it up to her. Obviously this sappy shit wasn't my forte; I was going to need help. A lot of help.

I kissed Anna on the cheek and hopped out of bed. I flung my shirt over my head and pulled my pants on, practically running out the door.

"Why did you call all of us here Dal?" Darry asked, looking a little annoyed.

"Yeah, we got shit to do!" Steve yelled, whapping Two-Bit on the back.

"I need ideas, boys." I said simply.

"Ideas for what?" Soda asked, a curious gleam in his eye.

"For Anna, I gotta do somethin' romantic to show her I mean business." I replied, looking around the room for support.

"Dallas Winston? Romantic?" Johnny guffawed, clutching his stomach in laughter.

"Shut up!" I smacked hit across the back of his head to get him to stop. "I'm serious."

"I never thought I'd see the day Dally got serious about a lady." Soda commented in wonder, putting his hand on Darry's shoulder.

"Come on, guys! Just gimmie some ideas so we can stop talkin' about this!" It wasn't good to get me exasperated and angry at the same time.

"Have you ever seen a sunset Dally?" Ponyboy blurted out, speaking up for the first time.

"Thanks guys, now get outta here! I gotta go get Anna!"

I had skipped work to set up the surprise, so I had to go back down to the pool before Anna left. This plan needed to have the right timing.

Anna screamed as I pulled her away from the path leading out of the locker rooms.

"What the hell, Dally! Where have you been all day?" Anna yelled, whipping around to face me. I turned her back around and held my hands over her eyes so she couldn't see.

"I'll explain it all in a second, just calm down!" I told her. I heard her huff out a sigh, but she let me guide her without resisting. I led her up a small hill that was away from most of the rooms and the stuff for all the residents.

"Ready?" I asked.

"Whatever." She sighed again. I took my hands away and we walked the few steps left to the very top of the hill. I watched her face for a reaction.

"Is this a joke?" Anna looked at me, eyebrows raised.

"Whattya talkin' about?" I turned away from her and looked over at the picnic I had set up for the two of us. "Shit…" I muttered, almost too angry to yell. The food was half eaten and half buried in the dirt, or mud where the drinks had been poured out, even the blanket was torn in two.

"First you leave me while I'm asleep and now this? I mean, I knew your reputation but I didn't think you were like this. I think we're done Dal, we're just done, OK?" She said, a look of defeat in her eyes, already beginning to walk away.

"No, I didn't do this Anna, you gotta believe me!" I begged, running in front of her. "I left cuz I wanted to do something special for you tonight and I needed help puttin' it together. I was so caught up in it I didn't realize what I was doin' to you. But Pony gave me this real good idea. We were gonna have a picnic and watch the sunset, I even stole your favorite snack from the kitchen! It was supposed to be romantic…" I trailed off, not really knowing what else I could say to convince her.

"Dally, trying to be romantic?" She said, trying to hold back a laugh.

"Why does everyone think that's so damn funny?"

"You were really trying to be romantic for me Dally?"

"I really was."

"Then who did this?" Anna asked, gesturing towards the destroyed surprise. I heard something coming from over the hill and walked over a little to get a better look. There were three boys, about twelve or thirteen, who I had a record of harassing.

"I think I know who."

"Those little kids over there?" Anna asked, doing the same thing I did to get a better look, they saw her and went off running,"What goes around comes around." Anna said, giving me a pointed look.

"Very funny."

"You were really trying to get serious, weren't you Dal?" Anna took my hands.

"It didn't work out too well…" I said, letting go of one her hands to rub the back of my neck, "but yeah, I'm really tryin'."

"Then I think I'm gonna try to. We can make this work."

I didn't say anything; I just wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her in for a kiss. I pulled away after and second and looked down at her, "Remember when you said that you wanted a guy who did what he wanted when he wanted?"

She nodded, "You want to go kick those kid's butts don't you?" Anna stated, more than asked.

"I'll be back before sunset," I told her, kissing once again before running after the kids, "You get back here you little punks!" I screamed.
