Chapter 1:
KPOV
Positive. All 5 white sticks showed the same thing. I'm pregnant. I felt like I should be scared, yet all I could feel was excitement and love.
Peeta and I had been married for maybe 6 months now. We had gotten married after my Hunger Games last year. After going into the games (and surviving) Peeta and I decided that we were done living in fear. It wasn't worth it. So, after having dated for two years before I was reaped, he asked me to marry him the day I came home. It was difficult at first, because we had dated in secret, knowing that Peeta's mother wouldn't approve of me. I believe that she once called me "The Dirty Seam Girl". We were married a few months after getting engaged. It had been a large affair, nothing less for President Snow, who had our wedding televised along with thousands of people who didn't even know us in attendance. We privately had a toasting, which both of us preferred and it was just the two of us.
We had discussed having children, before I had been reaped I was against having children because I didn't want them to be reaped. But, recently we had discussed it and we both decided that we weren't going to try for children, but we weren't going to prevent it either. I still feared them being reaped, but not as much. I decided I wanted to surprise Peeta, so I decided to go to the doctor to get the lab testing done.
I sat down in one of the uncomfortable chairs after filling out the necessary forms and wait to hear my name called.
"Mrs. Mellark" a nurse calls and I follow her out to an exam room where she then takes a blood sample.
"The results will be back in about ten minutes" she tells me. I nod her and then grab my cell phone to text Peeta that I'll meet him at the bakery in half an hour. When the nurse walks back in she hands me a printed sheet of with the test results. "Congratulations! You're two months pregnant!" she says as she smiles, "Would you like me to get the doctor for an ultrasound?" I smile, but shake my head,
"No, I think I'll wait for Peeta."
"Okay, well then you're free to go. Here's some prenatal vitamins; make sure to take one every day. You might want to set up an appointment for your 3 month mark, and then once a month after that." I nod and leave with a smile on my face.
I walk over to the bakery, which is fairly close, five minutes. The bakery windows are full of delicious looking cakes, that have been carefully decorated. I can tell that it's Peeta's work and I smile. As I open the door, the scent of flour, bread, and a hint of chocolate hits me. There's a small bell that hangs over the door and rings to alert the boys that someone's entered. Rye, Peeta's older brother walks to the counter and hops over it.
"Hey, little sis!" he says while hugging me so tight that I feel like my inside may be barfed up. "Peeta! Your wifey is here!" he screams childishly. I laugh, and Peeta walks out of the back; he's still covered in flour, dough, and icing. He walks over to me and gives me a sweet a kiss that tastes like buttermilk frosting and sugar. I gently meld my body to his, the kiss isn't overly showy, but definitely full of love. I regretfully remove my lips from his.
"Are we getting dinner? Or are you going to make something?" he asks me.
"We can go out, Greasy Sae made squirrel stew today." I reply, Peeta licks his lips before grabbing a loaf of french bread, which goes great with stew.
Together, Peeta and I make our way over to the hob and over to Greasy Sae's booth, both eager.
"Hello dears" she greets us. "Two bowls?"
"Yes please" Peeta responds while handing the money to her.
"Oh no, you mustn't pay me! Katniss already provided the meat and you've given me 3 loaves of bread this week." She declines.
"Please, Sae take the money?" I ask. "We have enough for ourselves, our child and anymore children we may have to live off of...maybe even their children!" I insist. I stop, hoping that they hadn't noticed my slip up.
She stays quiet and looks as if she's debating something.
"You're pregnant?" Peeta asks, his voice barely a whisper. Shoot. I hadn't meant to tell him yet. I had wanted it to be a surprise. I turn and face him.
"Yeah, you're going to be a daddy" I tell him softly. "I found out today." I move Peeta's hand to rest on my still flat stomach. Tears well in his eyes and he uses his other hand to softly caress my face before pulling us close together and whispering words of joy and thanks in my ears. He kisses me tenderly and I slowly pry him from my body, remembering that we were in public and Greasy Sae stood there with a large smile on her face.
"Congratulations children," she handed us our soup, "no charge for the soon-to-be-parents" and I don't try to sway her mind this time, knowing that it wouldn't work.
"Thank You" I said and kissed her on the cheek. Peeta and I sat down and ate our soup together, discussing the baby and both enjoying the moment together.
