She looked at Steve and saw he was proud of her too. Proud to be her boss, but the quick flash of distress and sadness didn't pass her by as he excused himself and went inside his office. Danny and Chin looked on as he went and just told her that he wasn't feeling good anyway. She was upset that he didn't show much emotion, but she tried to keep a steady head. Steve could do whatever Steve wanted to do. But she wondered why he's acting so weird since she's gotten back. She couldn't bring herself to follow him, not like she didn't want too, but she couldn't help but wonder what was going through his mind.
What was really wrong with Steve.
September 25, 2015
Later that day...
She decided against the idea of going to his office to see what the case was with him, she cared for Steve, she really did. But she couldn't walk in there hoping that maybe after everything she managed to go through that they both wouldn't start yelling at each other. So for the rest of the day she got in on the work Danno and her cuz were doing in order to close her case.
Steve didn't come out much, but when he did he stared at her like he wanted to get something off his chest, but decided against it. Despite her silent efforts to communicate with him and tell him to get out with it. She could tell he was upset, it was brewing under his skin. Like an infection that spread, it started to affect the manner of his conversation with everyone around him.
He reprimanded her for going to see a witness without backup or supervision, she argued that she's a grown ass woman and she doesn't need supervision by anyone much less him. She was about to enforce her anger on his face in the form of her fist, but she has self-control and once again decided against it. She turned around to walk away from him and towards her car to go home, but was stopped by the firm grip on her wrist.
"Steve, let me go."
"You need to understand, Kono."
"Understand what McGarrett? That you're too overwhelming for your own good?"
"No Steve, you have no right to talk to me this way or even think about putting your hands on me like this. Now get off of me."
His grip on her wrist released and his head fell down with a sigh of resignment he walked away to his vehicle. Kono already speeding off towards her home, she still felt the tingles of his hand on her wrist. Her anger surpassing her need for him and his touch.
It never mattered how she felt, did it? He just took what he wanted and left her to pick up the pieces. She loved him and he went back to Catherine. She was missing and now she's back and it's like he doesn't even care. She didn't matter at all. She didn't matter. Maybe she should've stayed in Japan. At least she would've been welcomed there.
Not in the slightest Kono.
She didn't ask for this. She didn't ask for him to love her. She thought he just did. She thought that maybe it would be better. He would be better. She would be better. That they somehow, possibly, they could be better. Together. She just wanted that. With him. Now? It doesn't even matter because they never did.
She parked her car in front of her house and slammed the door harder than needed and did the same to her front door when she opened it to get inside. She ran her fingers through her hair and sighed out loud, looking around at her living room. She wished she could understand what was going on with him. She growled out an irritated groan and decided she would take a shower to relieve her frustrations.
After she was done, she put on her usual nightwear of some short boy shorts and one of Steve's Navy Seal cut off shirts he left over her house awhile ago. She lotioned her legs and the rest of her body and went to her kitchen to grab a bottle of beer from the fridge to try and get rid of the shimmering anger in her head.
Leaning on the island in the center of her kitchen she threw her head back and drowned the longboard in a matter of minutes, going to the fridge to receive another, she popped open the cap and drank again at the cold alcoholic beverage. She was about to drown the contents of the bottle like she did the first one, but was stopped in mid efforts by a knock on her door.
She reflexively looked at the clock on her microwave and slightly cocked her head to the side at the digital digits that informed her that it was almost 10 o'clock at night. She voiced that she would be right there, placing the longboard on the island before going to the door and opening it to reveal the only person she did not want to see right now.
"What do you want."
"Let me in."
What. do. you. want."
"Let me in Kono. Please."
She looked at his face and looked back in her house completely reluctant to let him in, but the weaker part of her told her to just do it. So she moved aside and pulled the door with her to let him in, closing the door behind her and locking it. Crossing her arms over her chest, one of her hands gripping the fabric of his shirt to reassure herself that she's in control here.
Sighing, as the silence in the room, was deafening. Wishing that he didn't just come here to stand in front of her with his head slightly bowed. She was about to asked what he was doing here when he looked at her. His eyes tired and red. She gasped silently. She wondered what happened to make him look like he was on the brink of death itself.
"I'm sorry Kono." His voice raspy and husky, filled with an unknown emotion to her.
"For what?" Her voice quiet and soft as she looked on at him, waiting for an elaboration.
"My behavior, since you got back. I'm just dealing with a lot right now and I'm taking it out on you." He sighed, rubbing his stubble with his hands. His voice was quiet, but holding the respective tone in it.
"I don't understand Steve, why are you saying this now? I've been back for almost a week now." She truly didn't understand, he's been treating her unfairly ever since she's been back. She knew that they all have been dealing with her false death in different ways, but Danny and Chin have come to terms with the fact that she isn't dead. Why couldn't he? She doesn't understand what he's trying to say here.
"I know, I just-I'm having a hard time with you being back." He shifted on his right foot, moving so he a bit closer to her. She is still standing in front of the door with her arms wrapped around herself. She can't help but be a bit mad at him. He shouldn't care now if he didn't care before. She didn't want his pity or his sorry excuse for an apologize.
"Steve I don't understand why you're here. You didn't care before, so why now. Why now of all times for this. You've done so many things to me these past few days to confuse me and make me think I'm fucking crazy. What do you want me to say? Is it okay? Do I forgive you? Ha. I think you need to leave, now."
"Kono, please. Listen to me." Steve's eyes pleaded with her to give him some type of reconcile. She sighed, and the anger in her lowered just bit when she looked at him.
"Steve I'm done, I can't do this anymore with you. You're with Catherine, and you know what it's fine. I was in Japan, and I was stuck there. I couldn't get out and all I thought about was you! I couldn't do anything! I tried to forget you, because I knew you moved on, but I couldn't. What do you want from me? I know I don't matter, and you could care less, but don't come here and pretend you give a damn because you don't Steve, you don't." Her voice rising every in every sentence, her heart on her sleeve, wishing it would go back in its box.
But it's always out when he's around.
"You really think I don't care about you, Kono! You think I'm with Catherine at that? I haven't talked to Cath in over a year. Not even after our last time together. I'm sorry you had to go through that, I'm sorry you were put through that Kono, I haven't been able to do anything since we thought you were dead. I thought I lost you. I thought you were gone and I couldn't tell you have I felt because you thought you could hide and do this and get away from me like that." His voice rising along with hers stepping closer to her, his heart on his sleeve.
As his always comes out when she's around.
She looked down at her bare feet, beginning to feel uncomfortable at his confessions.
"You were gone Kono, and I didn't know what to do. You were dead. We buried you. I visited your grave. Came to your house. I missed your presence, and then I find out that you're back. That you're alive, and you're okay from Joe of all people. Kono, I'm sorry. I am, and I wish I knew you were okay sooner. You know I care about you." Taking each step towards her, backing her against the door.
She gasped as a tear slid down her face and he caught it with his finger. He does care. He missed her. He worried about her. She closed her eyes and relished in the touch of his warm finger on her cheek. Unconsciously leaning her head into his touch,
"I love you Keiki. I loved you then, and I love you now. I'm sorry I made you feel like you didn't matter. You matter so much."
She lifted her head up and looked at him with new eyes, a surprised look shown on her face at he gripped her face between his hands and kissed her softly, but passionately. Showing her, and allowing her to feel what he's been trying to tell her since got here.
Pulling away, she slowly opened her eyes to the man she's been so desperately trying to understand for such a long time. She knows he feels the same now. It wasn't for granted, and now she can say for herself that she loves him too.
"I love you too, Kahuna."
