Wow that took longer than I expected. (I guess I was a but caught up in the football - which made me want to eat 20 tubs of ice cream)

The song is Friends by Ed Sheeran - I thought I should keep the artist the same...

Friends

We're not friends, we could be anything
If we tried to keep those secrets safe
No one will find out if it all went wrong
They'll never know what we've been through

So I could take the back road
But your eyes'll lead me straight back home
And if you know me like I know you
You should love me, you should know

She cried for 3 days.

Or maybe it was more – she wasn't really sure.

Six tries to come in, but every ounce of ice that had betrayed Marina comes rushing back out, splaying from her fingers and coating the door. She clenches her hand into a fist, and the layer cracks, shards sprinkling the floor. Then she presses her hand into her chest, even more horrified now.

Maybe she hopes to freeze her heart.

It might be less painful, less painful than knowing that it was her. It was her fault. It's her fault that she wanted Five dead. And now she is. All because of her stupid feelings for Eight.

Her stupid, stupid feelings. It was so obvious to her, to everybody that he didn't feel the same about her, and now this.

There is some sick part of her brain that tells her she should be happy. The other girl is out of the way now – don't you have him all to yourself?

She screams at Six to leave, and she doesn't have to ask twice.

Then Eight comes into her room.

She cant stop him, and as much as she tries, she cant keep him out.

Her knees draw up to her stomach and she curls up against the pillow, away from him and his cold green stare.

It's not hard to tell he's angry. And why wouldn't he be?

"Marina-" He starts, and his voice sounds like the thunderstorms that echoed through the orphanage in Santa Teresa.

She has never heard him so angry. And it scares her.

"I'm sorry" She sobs, burying her head into her knees "I didn't mean to-"

"But you did" He finishes, and purses his lips, coming to perch on the edge of her bed.

"I talked to Devdan about it, but he wouldn't say anything else" His fingers knot together. This time he doesn't look at her. In a way it's worse.

She looks at him though, his hunched shoulders, dull eyes.

She knows that she did this to him. He must have cared more about her than Marina thought.

Would he act like this if it was her?

Probably not.

"Why didn't you want to save her?"

She is glad he broke the taught silence. She would never have said anything if he didn't.

Her eyes flit to his, and she wants so badly to tell him that she doesn't know, that it must have been an accident, that Five was her friend and she would have done anything to save her.

But if she owes him anything, she owes him the truth.

So she tells him everything.

Everything about what she feels for him, everything about Five. He doesn't interrupt her, doesn't speak as she blurts the words out through harsh tears. She wonders if he will understand, if there is even the slightest glimmer of hope that he may forgive her.

When she is finished, silence falls again.

Neither of them move for a minute, and then, all of a sudden, Eight stands up quickly. Before he disappears, he turns to her with a dark stare.

"I wish you had died instead"

"YOU DID WHAT?!"

She looks at the boy with her grey eyes wide, staring in shock.

"I know – it's terrible. I was just so angry -"

"You practically told her that you wanted her dead!"

Six runs a hand through her hair, leaning back against the sofa. She cant believe it, the way they have fallen apart in so little time. Their bond was like glue, and they stuck so tight together that she was certain nothing could tear them apart.

Much less a single Garde member. Another garde member.

She doesn't want to blame Five, but she cant help herself. Marina is a sister to her, and anybody getting in the way of her happiness will have Six to answer to. But then she thinks back to Marina, cuddled in her bed, sobbing.

Maybe she is too far gone to ever be happy again.

"You have to apologise" She says firmly, looking him right in the eye.

"I cant"

"You have to. You cant just say that to somebody, no matter what she did"

"What do I say?"

"What do you want to say?" Six is unflinching – arms crossed over her chest. They both know that she will win the fight, so Eight just sighs and gets up.

"Where are you going?" She asks, surprised.

"To apologise"

She has stopped crying by the time he goes back the second time. Or at least he cant hear her.

This time he knocks – gently. His initial anger and despair has cleared, and (although rather grudgingly) he cant stop thinking about what Six said.

He knows what she did, and he know that he cant forgive her yet.

But maybe – they might be able to piece together a friendship.

She doesn't appear, or yell at him to leave, so he takes a breath and pokes his head through the door.

She is sitting by the window – and improvement – and she has a pair of headphones on. God knows where she got them from, but they seem to be masking whatever noise he makes.

As he gets closer, he notices her faraway gaze, her hair pulled up into a tight ponytail that only emphasises her pale face.

"Marina?" He reaches out to touch her shoulder, and she jumps back, tearing the headphones off and moving backwards. She looks at him like he is insane.

"Um – I just wanted to say I'm sorry"

He drops his head down, fixing his eyes on her bare feet, the fact that her toes are curled from the cold and her nails are long enough to scratch along the wooden floorboards.

"Why?" She asks quietly – folding her hands into her lap.

"Because I didn't mean it. I was angry and confused and I needed somebody to blame. And I guess you were the most obvious person." He continues in a rush "But I know that you didn't mean it – not consciously anyway. And I don't want you to blame yourself"

She looks up at him, brown eyes wide and bewildered. Her hand brushes through her hair and he waits in silence until she talks again.

"But it was my fault" How can he forgive her, or not blame her? "I killed her"

He's shocked "No you didn't"

"Somebody dying because of you – isn't that what killing means? I didn't heal her so she died" Her throat tightens again at the memory of Fives limp body and her hand falls onto the table, clenching into a fist.

He hates the fact he made her feel like this, and before he knows what he is doing, his hand has prised hers open and his fingers have twined with hers.

Her brow furrows and she takes in a sharp breath at the simple touch.

"You should hate me"

"I don't think I could ever hate you"

Marina hugs her knees to her chest and looks up at Eight, her eyes burning.

"I'm sorry" She murmurs, hoping more than anything that he wont stop holding her hand.

He smiles sadly - hoping that for once they could just be normal teenagers, living a normal life. Not having to think about being killed or forgiving a friend for killing somebody else.

"I know"

Guess I couldn't keep evil Eight for too long - it felt wrong...

And I don't even know what that ending was supposed to be?
