Why I Write:
I decided to start writing stories because many stories that I have read have rather disappointed me. When I say that, I am not insulting any authors whatsoever or any of their stories, nor am I trying to sound or act superior. All authors deserve respect and all of their work is just as deserving. I am merely saying that some of the minor elements with some of the stories is a little disappointing. There is a rather noticeable disregard for grammar and spelling with some stories (but nobody really minds, including myself). Also, some stories could be better because authors are lazy or don't care. They rush (which I can understand if readers are getting impatient or their personal lives are interfering) or quit or lose interest. I believe (from past experience and from my anal attitude) that one should finish what they start. You know, all that "karma" bull-crap. However, what gets to me the most is how some authors tend to lose sight of or change a character's personality. I really hate it when characters aren't like they should be. I understand if it's an AU story, but if it's not (what I consider to be an AU story) then there is no excuse. I hope I didn't sound like a jerk as you read that, 'cause I wasn't tryin' to be. If you were offended by what I said, I apologize.
Also because NaruHina is the most badass pairing ever. I wanted to spread the NaruHina love my own way, rather than criticising other people's works. Also, some fics move relationships too fast, and I don't like that (OneShots and SongFics aside). I hate it when the characters go from total strangers to lovers in, like, 2 paragraphs. That gets to me. And, like I already said, I REALLY hate it when the main characters are too OOC (AU fics aside). That pisses me off more than anything.
Also, I hate authors who decide they're too damn lazy to finish they're fics. I also started writing so we could have more completed fics. I hate all the unfinished stories, especially when they're really good. Granted, I may be lazy and update slowly, but at least I plan to finish my fics, and I'll be damned if I don't, 'cause nothin' short of a premature death will douse my fiery passion for writing badass stories! I also hate authors who write lame endings for their stories 'cause they lose interest towards the end and try to finish it up quickly. Lazy bastards! His and Her Fairy Tale was a great story, but the author was too damn lazy and lost interest, and the story had a lame ending. Granted, it was still a wonderful story, but the ending could have been so much better. Next time you wanna give a story up, send it to me so I can finish it for you, you lazy ass. ALSO, I hate authors that say stuff like, "I won't update until I get reviews!" Assholes! We can only submit one review per chapter, and, besides, if you're writing to get reviews, and only reviews, then you don't deserve to be called an author. Alright, enough ranting...
Writing Tips:
Alright, look. I'm not gonna pretend like I'm some expert or anything, but I have some advice if anyone wants some.
The Plot - Don't start a story and only have the first chapter planned. Have the first several planned, so if you get writer's block, you have some time to brood on it, instead of readers waiting on you to get over it.
The Summary - Don't waste space writing disclaimers or nonsense. Write what the story is about and the main pairing (if it has one), and perhaps several of the other main pairings if you have space. I'm tired of reading summaries that tell me to "just read the story, it will be good," or "REVIEW! READ AND REVIEW, DAMN YOU!" It's annoying. Also nonsense that has nothing to do with the story, such as disclaimers and comments from the author, are useless. I don't care what you think about the story. The summary is all about the reader. Your summary should tell what the story is about, and nothing more. Comments, demands for reviews, disclaimers, and nonsense can be posted inside the chapter. There's more than enough room there.
Grammar - I suffer from OCD, so I'm constantly checking my grammar and spelling, but you don't have to and shouldn't. While grammar is important, concentrating on plot and character development is more important. You can do what I do; do a primary revision, then post the chapter, THEN read over it all you want and correct mistakes, then replace the first post with a revised post. Beta readers are also good, but can also consume a lot of time. Have maybe 2 at the most. As for Japanese, you can use it, but, you know, we speak ENGLISH. Not Japanese; ENGLISH. Sure, it may be more traditional to use Japanese terms occasionally, and I don't it mind much, but there really is no need. I don't know how the trend started, but it seems silly and pointless to me. We speak ENGLISH. And don't deny it. If you didn't, you wouldn't be reading this.
Character Development - Ahh, a real biggie, this one. This element is crucial for any romance writer. Any good romance story has good, or at least decent, character development. If the characters don't grow and develop, how can they fall in love? Really, this is the biggest thing I look for in a story, next to plot. Seriously, nothing makes me feel fuzzier inside that reading chapters and chapters of light NaruHina fluff and seeing Naruto and Hinata develop and slowly fall in love. It makes it all the more sweeter when that "special moment" all NaruHina fans love happens. And, honestly, it's hard to find that these days. But I remain vigilant.
IC-ness/OOC-ness - Another element that strongly plays into character development is how you make the characters themselves behave. Keeping them IC (In-Character) is the way to keep the readers happy. They read fan fiction to read about Naruto being Naruto, so you should give them Naruto being Naruto. I really only see making the characters OOC (Out-of-Character) a good choice when you're trying to write humor, or after a extremely dramatic experience.
OC's - Ah, OC's... OC's (Original Characters) are characters you create. While throwing in some OC's can be good for plot, character development, or comical purposes, crating too many or concentrating too much on an OC is bad. People read Naruto fan fiction to read about Naruto, not some random character you created. There's for that.
Asking for Reviews - I know how much you all like it when you go to the "Stats" page and see new reviews. Reviews are like fuel for an author's cackling blaze of an imagination. However, demanding reviews is not very becoming of a good and competent author. We can only review once per chapter, and it's not our fault if not enough people like your story. A good author and a competent author writes for themselves and for the readers, as well as to support and represent their fandom and perhaps their favorite pairings. The government of writing is a democratic republic, not a dictatorship; you have control, but the people deserve their fair share of respect and have the right to give their opinion and have it respected. Just keep this in mind: "Pride cometh before the fall."
Reviewing - Whle reviewing stories doesn't exactly fall under the category of writing, you still should be proper in how you review. If you review, be polite and respectful about it. You don't have to like the story, but instead of rudely ranting about how much the story blows, give some criticism. If you think the story is so bad, let's see some suggestions you think would make the story better. If you do, be polite about it. No one likes an arrogant, rude, and insensitive ass to criticize their story. If you have nothing nice, or at least polite and respectful, to say, then just shut up and don't review. No one forces you to review. Getting back on track, when reviewing, use acceptable grammar, so the author will actually know that the hell you're talkin' about. Also, try to be constructive and critical in your review. Authors appreciate it when you can help them write a better story.
