About The Aftermath Universe

After The Hunger Games series ended, I've found myself wondering, "What happened after the series ended?"

Just what happened after the Rebels took over Panem after the Capitol fell?

As a pessimistic realist, and someone who has always been interested in past and present-day conflicts, oppressive regimes, societal issues like discrimination, and other things I'm interested in. I personally think that only some, not everyone in Panem lived happily ever after.

In my head-canon, I believed what happened is that when Commander Paylor became the new President of Panem. She tried to bring peace and stability to the country by leading reconciliation and rebuilding efforts. However, the majority population in Panem (Mainly those who consider themselves Outliers, or the people from Districts 3 to 13) still had a lot of hatred and prejudice towards the minority who supported the Capitol's regime (The Capitolite citizens and the people who consider themselves Careers, namely the people of Districts 1 and 2 as well as the loyalist population in District 4, which those loyalist Fours were referred to as Westerners due to the fact that many of them live in the western half of Four). They saw Paylor's reconciliation efforts as her being "too soft" towards the Careers and Capitolites.

So, the majority of Outliers in Panem voted out Paylor, as well as any "Cappie and Career loving" Outlier, when new elections started. In her place, they've elected rebel veterans with discriminatory and extremist views towards the Capitolite and Career minority to lead the country. These Outlier extremists formed a political party known as the Panem Nationalist Party, or PNP for short. During their 20 to 30 years in power (I'm still wondering how long they should be in power for), they were hugely popular with the Outlier majority for leading rebuilding efforts. In the years that followed, the PNP presided over an economic miracle in Panem thanks to their economic policies.

As you may have guessed, the PNP weren't popular with the Capitolite and Career minority, for good reason. The PNP committed every human rights abuse you can think of to terrorize and oppress the Capitolites, Careers, as well as non-prejudiced Outliers who try to speak out. During the PNP's dominance in the nation's government, thousands upon thousands of Careers, Capitolites, and non-prejudiced Outliers would either end up fleeing the country for a better life elsewhere, be sentenced to prison or to "reintegration" camps, or were killed or have conveniently "disappeared".

However, like all things, the PNP's decades long rule will come to an end eventually. In the final years of the PNP's hold on Panem, the country's economy suffered, causing them to lose popularity. The PNP lost even more popularity when many thought they had outright rigged an election to keep them in power. Not to mention, many Outliers, especially a new generation of young people, wanted change and had enough with the PNP. They were a generation who has never experienced being brutally mistreated at the hands of the Capitol regime their parents and grandparents told them about. A generation who was increasingly shocked and appalled by the brutal treatment of Panem's Career and Capitolite minority.

All of these factors culminated in the PNP facing their biggest challenge yet in the month of March. Crowds of young people, all a mix of Outliers, Careers, and Capitolites, all across the country began to protest for Panem to become a true democratic nation. One where every single human being in this nation had rights and freedoms. The PNP sent the army to suppress the protests, but some of the young soldiers and officers within the military launched a coup that quickly overrun the Capitol and overthrow the PNP government. The surprise coup and the chaos that ensued resulted in the overthrow of the PNP regime and the transition to becoming a truly free, democratic nation.

After the PNP regime fell, its leaders and followers were tried for their crimes, especially for crimes against the nation's Career and Capitolite minority. Granted, the new free, democratic Panem is still trying to come to terms with its brutal past and the issues and divisions that resulted from both the Capitol and PNP regimes. However, a small, hopeful part of me wants to believe that the majority of people in Panem, both Outlier, Career, and Capitolite, have finally became so sick of violence, hatred/prejudice, and vengeance to the point where they don't want to repeat the cycle again, for anybody.

My new Hunger Games fanfics will take place during that period in Panem's history, at least, in my head-canon anyways.
