My favorite character is Andrew Carter. When I was at university, Larry Hovis was my favorite instructor and truly taught me to laugh. He was a warm, caring, passionate man who loved to teach. I loved to listen to his take on Carter and the others characters he'd played. I spent many hours talking and listening to him. That had to be the highlight of my time Southwest Texas State University.
I know a lot of author's write Carter as comic relief, clumsy and stupid. As much fun as those stories are, and yes I laugh at them, there's much more to him. There are many sides of Andrew Carter, and I like reading stories to explore those other sides. I guess I have my image of Carter tainted by that of Mr Hovis, but who better could anyone draw inspiration from?
My favorite Hogan's Heroes episode is Sticky Wicket Newkirk.
In that episode, Carter pretends to be a Luftwaffe General and he makes Hochstetter sweat! Carter takes control of the Gestapo and runs them out of Stalag 13 showing his serious side. Many times he does act the fool, but I've always seen it as an act to bring comic relief to his team. The team was constantly under serious amounts of stress and needed that type of relief. Hogan would have never allowed someone who wasn't capable to be his demolitions expert. If Carter was only a klutz, he'd never been given his own lab or be on Hogan's team. If he didn't have some serious attitude, he wouldn't have been able to run the Gestapo out of camp, or pull off playing several German officers and even Hitler a time or two!
If you know of a good Carter fic, please let me know. I'd love to read it!
Someone asked me what I enjoy: family and friends. I love spending time with my Oma, she raised me. Although she's now in a nursing home, I go by at least 2-3 times a week and spend a few hours with her and her friends.
My friends are important to me, I love getting together with girl friends and having a good time. Some are here in the city, others are in different times zones.
Because of complications in real life, I've given the Carter story I was writing to another author to write. I know she'll do an excellent job with the story.
