Growing up, my mother used to rewrite the endings to books if they failed to end happily or in the way she wanted.
She rewrote Romeo & Juliet- in Shakesperean prose- so they would live happily ever after. She rewrote her romance novels if the girl chose the wrong guy. She rewrote poems that ended in heartbreak when she only wanted happy.
She lived her life as a tried and true romantic at heart and also, now that I realize it, wrote “fanfiction”. But it was just called creativity and dissatisfaction with an original story.
That’s what I love about rewriting stories, characters, and relationships.
It’s the simplest and sweetest form of creative satisfaction.
