Nineteenth-century poet and writer Victor Hugo, known for works such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables, had a very active romantic life. Hugo was married to Adele Foucher for over 40 years, but this didn't deter him from having relationships with other women.

Hugo was said to have had as many as 200 lovers, some of whom he financially supported for years. He reportedly coded his sexual escapades in his diary using a system of abbreviations for what each woman offered.

When Hugo perished in 1885, brothels throughout the city of Paris closed so the prostitutes could attend his service. Hugo had been a loyal customer, but he was also given a state funeral, potentially influencing the closure. One source indicated the women"had draped their [genitalia] in black crepe as a mark of respect.”
